Never thought I was raised particularly European (rural area, hippy parents) but apparently so. My wife makes fun of me because I'll spend an hour repairing something so it lasts instead of buying another for $20

None of my European friends (or friends with strong European cultural leanings) give it a second thought when I advise them of proper behaviour around my cars. I have zero concern that any of them who have been familiarized with proper conduct would do anything unacceptable around my cars at this point. I have even seen/been made aware of some of them advising of/enforcing proper behaviour with others who don't know/don't care.

The hippie philosophy comes with a lot of environmental perspectives that lead to a maintainer mindset. See also: back to the land, alternative economic models with greater emphasis on humanity/environment, etc. Not that much of leap from respect for the planet and other people to respect for our stuff.

I get both sides......I fix it if I can justify the time spent and the quality of the end result. Sometimes it just makes more sense to swap for new. ie. My brother in law-(German) rebuilt the fuel system on a 79 SEL 500. While pretty impressive...he also destroyed an electric drill bringing back the factory finish on the fuel filter. And of course in true German fashion spent three days complaining about how the tools were cheap junk and that he could build one better. And I have no doubt that given the time he could as he was building robotics and working on microwave emitters for a medical outfit prior to opening his guitar repair business. I think a lot of it has to do with the cost really.

I’m in France just now and spent 430 euros on 20 litres of interior house paint. So you bet your backside I’m gonna be quite a bit more cautious with the paint than had I bought the cheaper paint in the states.

Got a local welder to come by and attempt removing two broken studs from the head on the exhaust side. The two outside studs on cylinder 1 and 5.

Despite taking everything out on the exhaust side, access was still poor and it took us a number of tries, but managed to get them out! Wasn't pretty, but it worked, and I won't be needing to remove the head after all!

      Is that a trick question?
I know for certain which one I'd snag.

Installed IPD Transmission mount, and Snabb short shifter.

As expected the new mount makes the car vibrate more, but it's not too bad. Overall, it makes the car feel more alive, and responsive, especially during middle speed acceleration.

The shifter is not as short as I was expecting. The last after market short shifter I tried was in a Toyota 86. Now that was a short throw.

Ha, thanks! The first on cylinder 1 came out with ease because he could weld straight on with decent visibility. But the one on cylinder 5 was really difficult because of the lip below the stud, and the welder being right handed - it was touch and go. He had to hold the nut with vice grips connected to one terminal of the welder, while welding with the other hand and shooting the wire right down the center of the nut. Often he'd hit the sidewall and blow it out and not stick to the stud. I started cutting the side out of the nuts at the end so he could come at a slight angle and that worked in the end.

      That got wordy...

Anyway, now I'm trying to find a couple of M10 studs to upsize these outside studs. If anyone has any leads or recommendations, please let me know!

OEM Brembo/Akebono kit from @FCP Euro, and replaced the missing fuel rail cover (zip tied by PO...)

Wtf were you guys taking about, these pads are INSANELY grippy and linear. Best I've ever used, at least my (subjective) butt sensors say they're way better than the original Volvo metal pads, nuts smooth too. Plus lifetime warranty? Yeah sign me up.

Not mine, but threw a siren module in a gorgeous low mileage Electric Silver VR owned by @Frederick. Wanted to try going through the bumper/headlight, little involved but super simple. Probably should've taken more pictures, but here's the front bumper and right headlight off (fcp has a good tutorial on removing)

Here's the siren module, one 10mm on top and one on bottom and it slides right out, no grinding or drilling needed. The bolts are captive in channels on the siren module. Enough slack in the connector that it'll pull out of the metal casing enough to unclip it.

      All buttoned back up!
He brought me this delicious Mad Machinist double ipa from Gearhouse in Chambersburg. Thanks man!

You can also get to it through the fenderwell, less involved but could take longer depending on the size of your hands I ripped mine out, taped off the connector and now that spot holds my Alky Pump, super discrete...

Sounds like a plan but.... followed up with some adult beverages! It would be nice to see 3 VRs all lined up.

Still stoked on how much cargo area I have in the R. Two bikes no problem!

Lol looks like all the sirens are offing themselves at the same time. Scroll up to see one I just replaced

Mine died recently too! Terrible design.

I removed the siren but the battery fried the circuit board so couldn’t fix it. Brought the car to volvo and they disabled the alarm via a software fix so no more message. Only charged me 50$ so I’m happy that I don’t have to deal with it in the future. Obviously no alarm functionality anymore but it doesn’t bother me.
