turbo td04hl-16t compressor swap to 18t or 19t

Hi, i own a 1998 v70 t5 with ipd's ecu and catback + custom downpipe would like to know if i could change my stock turbo compressor (16t) for a 18t or 19t. Would i need more gas (bigger injectors) with the same amount of boost (15psi) , with a bigger compressor. Im looking for another +-30hp to finish my project , any ideas (no nos please). Thanks Daniel S.

Re: turbo td04hl-16t compressor swap to 18t or 19t (antigua1901)

The 18T is a bolt on replacement. Injectors should not be necessary depending on type of tuning. 30 HP gain is much, I wonder if it is doable. The 18T should give a wider torque band and gain at the upper part of the rev band.

For the 19T a different downpipe is needed. MY2000 C70T5 pipe should fit.
19T will give bigger gain, minimum white injectors recommended.

      Hi Daniel,

Thomas Alsterfalk of TME visited last month and he and I put some notes down about possible future staged kits beyond what we are currently offering. It will probably be summer before I have any prinicng or intstallation informaiton, but here are my notes on the '98 T5, which seem to echo what johann shared.

      870 T5 1998 T5

      Stock Mitsu-16T
      Injectors 350cc

      Stage 1
      ECU & Exhaust 275 HP

      Stage 2
      Downpipe 285-290 HP

      Stage 3 300HP
Mitsu-18-T ( spool up will be slow with auto trans)
      New software
      Wastegate 300/70 from 2000R

      Stage 4 310 HP
      Exhaust manifold (850R 1996 850R Euro version)

Stage 5 Intercooler from TME 315-320

No injector upgrade needed stockers are good up to approx 350 HP

      Hope that helps!

Thanks Johann for the reply, very interesting. I will go for the 18t for now and maybe later on with the 19t with bigger injectors. Have you heard about the intercooler re-routing pipes? I don't want do get to extreme with the car but i wanna reach the high 13's any other ideas.... Thanks again

Hello Scott, ive made a call to my local volvo dealer and i can get the 1996 850r exhaust manifold ( direct from sweden ) for 800.00 cdn dollars, does it worth it?? Any idea about the gains? Thanks Daniel S.

      Re: (antigua1901)

Assuming you have done or will be doing all of the upgrades through stage 3 the main reaosn for doing the exhaust manifold is to reduce back pressure and heat. Amazingly there can be up to 40 psi of pressure between the cylinder head and turbo charger under full load. This creates huge amounts of heat which ultimately has an adverse effect on performance as well as stressing the realted parts.

      Is it worth it?

Speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?

I see you specificed "Euro version" on the manifold, I've got a US '96 R, what's the difference? (I'm just curious).

      Re: (jross)

I don't know that much about this model, but it was special in a few ways. They had a larger turbo, injectors and exhaust manifold. THey also had a very trick viscous limited slip differential trans. Maybe one of Johann can shed some light here as I have never seen any printed specs on this "mythical" model!

From what I have seen so far there are manifolds which also have an EGR connection on the side of cylinder number 5 runner. In total there are 3 or 4 different manifold versions but the better manifolds are from 1997 and on. A better option might be the newer MY2004 2.5T/R manifold which has better flow and is ~€100,- cheaper. It needs a few minor changes at the heat shield to make it fit.

Hello Scott, ive red the post from Joann about the manifold on the newer 2.5 R, do you still think it will be an upgrade for my T5 to get the 1996 850R manifold ? I just paid for a used 850R manifold and I don't know what to do??
      Thanks again

Johann has more experince with this than we do as we are just beginning to research staged upgrades. In regards to the performance differences and installation considerations I can't advise you as I have no hands on with it. Johann mentions that the 2,5T manifold might be better, but if you have the R manifold I'd probably stick with that. You might also look into having the R manifold Extrude-honed.

Hey Scott, how much do you think 400 cc injectors can hold up to ? Since 350 cc can handle 350 hp

      THANKS

Re: turbo td04hl-16t compressor swap to 18t or 19t (C70SPEED)

      TurboR850,

      Let's see.... 350CC injectors = 350 HP , so 400cc injectors must = 400 HP!
Just kidding, honestly I don't know. You are entering connecting rod and forged piston territory ( $3500 for no HP), which we don't support with our staged upgrade information a this time. I'd ask Kai as he's BTDT.

      C70SPEED,
THe downpipe for your car is $1400.
      Turbo change = software change.
