Custom S60R Hood Scoop to cool turbochager

unlike some air vents i've seen, it would have a purpose to cool turbocharger and it would close and open from inside in case it rains...so the question is....to scoop or not to scoop? so let all the positive input begin.

We all know the comments we will post in this thread will have no impact on the decision which you've already made on installing the scoop. Who are you kidding?!

Re: Custom S60R Hood Scoop to cool turbochager

I saw that same scoop on a ford tempo. I believe the driver had a tattoo mentioning something about tiger's blood and winning. Its your car and your dollar.
I would look at something recessed instead.

i think that scoop is too tall. if it was a little lower profile it would look good. it would be awesome to see a hood scoop done right! very unique!

      The spoiler looks great
Regarding the scoop....why don't you just run an Rkelly type tube from the other fog grille straight onto he turbo...everything would be done under the hood making it look stealthy

Can you shim the back of the hood to raise it to help more hot air escape from the rear engine bay area? Not a question about the scoop, per se, but if that was possible it would help with air flow. Running air into that area would definitely be useful, but you would get more efficient cooling with a way to draw the hot air out of the engine bay in conjunction with a scoop of some sort.

It just doesn't look right, while I don't think any scoop is going to look right on these cars I definitely think it needs to be lower and wider.

You know, it can be done. Using a similar but a bit more discreet design might work a bit better.

It's not going to make a difference. The water and oil pumping through the turbo is going to cool it way faster than air flowing over it ever could.

      ...Plus I hate scoops... :P

Those vents look good, but don't function as a scoop. I don't know how much heat people with aftermarket turbos are seeing under the hood, but I'd imagine that any sort of vent would help a bit with engine bay temps.

I think it would help lower engine bay temps a lot. Obviously its not going to replace primary internal cooling for the turbo, but any air movement over the turbo housing should cause a drop in temperature. It might not make the housing itself that much cooler, but it should help.

I guess my question is, are you looking to use this scoop to lower temps of the turbo itself? Or just help evacuate heat from the engine bay (the turbo housing area specifically)?

Here's an idea out of left field. I know the R's don't use the engine bay skid plate thing because it would increase temperatures too much. Would it be possible for somebody to design a partial skidplate to force air up the firewall and then have the hood raised using the method described on the CTS-V?

Shimming the rear of the hood will likely allow air IN not out. The base of the windshield is typically much higher pressure than under the hood.

I agree air cooling a turbo is pointless though. Enthalpy spools turbos and you'd be cooling the manifold by increasing convective heat transfer thereby robbing energy from the exhaust before it gets to the turbine. Its the reason you ceramic coat manifolds and turbine housings.

Precisely. I don't like the non functional decals scoop sticker things. Replace the whole damn hood with some recessed vents. A Kapax racing replica would be the sweetest thing.

But that is just hysterical. Oh and the prelude spoiler is great btw..
