      Rear view camera????

They say there's two things that "go" when you get older...First is your memory...Let me get back to you when I think of the second thing

I mention this because I don't recall anyone speaking of a rear view camera on the C70. Anybody out there got one? As we all know, even with the top down, the view behind the C70 is pretty limited...AND I've gotten spoiled by back up cameras in two vehicles so far. Any chance in the world this would be an easy upgrade?

Before you call me a wuss, DW drives the C70 most days and occasionally wants to back into our darkish, narrow garage(I don't mean back INTO, at least not so far).

So, how about a back up cam for the C70???

A buddy of mine retrofitted a back up cam in his R. The camera was hidden by the trunk handle. The Nav screen would pop up and display the camera when the car was in reverse, then go back down once the car was in neutral (or any other gear).

How factory do you want it to look? You could always order one of the nicer kits, hide the camera on the back somewhere, and integrate the screen some how.

Here's something I did for my GPS, all "hardwired" into the car:

Not so much. In our particular case, the garage I mentioned presents a fair challenge upon ingress/egress. I particularly like the Acura RDX cam with the three viewpoints of normal, wide and straight down. Certainly doesn't hurt to know if something or some small someONE has put themselves in the large blind spot behind the C70. The back up sensors do precious little in terms of providing information, even leaving the possibility of backing into a light pole if it's positioned just so.

Heck, I'd trade the near useless BLIS for a rear cam in a flash.

Howdy 'MyName'...thanks for the pics. I was hoping someone had figured a plug and play set up using the existing Nav screen and requiring minimal trouble to mesh with the existing hardware...too much to ask, I reckon.

Even with our (former) wide open carport down in Sandy Springs, I think a back up cam would have come in handy. Now that we're in Texas, it would be worth it just to help with parking in a lot full of F-350s

You guys still getting that giant outlet mall?

That "giant" outlet mall opened in July, in Woodstock. It's smaller than the Towne Center Mall, SIGNIFICANTLY smaller than the North GA Outlet Mall in Dawsonville. However, it did bring a lot of great stores a little closer to home.

Luckily, traffic hasn't increased much in Woodstock. Where about in Sandy Springs were you?

Do C70s have the large ceiling console? Or is more up there with the electronic roof? You might be able to rig a 4" screen in the empty space, which could be flipped down when you're backing up.

Coach - apologies if this is a dumb question, but does your C70 have rear park assist (the beeping parking sensors)? If not I believe they can be added as an accessory.

Rear cameras are a great addition, but I always turn around anyway (too old to break the habit). I especially like the audible sensors on the C70, and I know them so well by now that I can go to within 6 inches of any obstacle.

NyNameIdeas - good suggestions but I think it would have to be mounted on the dash somewhere (and not in the way of the pop up navigation screen if you have one) as there is not enough room overhead.

Thanks guys...DW and I could be seen motoring around the Mountaire Springs nee Underwood Hills area of Sandy Springs in a number of our early Volvos...including our '04 ragtop and beautiful Celestial Blue '08 we purchased just before heading 1000 miles west. I was a teaching pro at Sandy Springs Tennis Center nee North Fulton TC for a couple of decades. That 2 mile commute was fantastic!

Yes, we have the back up sensors...the ones that will allow one to back into a light standard and go completely bonkers when backing out of our severely sloped garage apron. Also, it's completely useless with the bike rack mounted on the hitch(knew that going in). I'd MUCH rather have a camera. When there is 11" of 'extra' space fore/aft of the vehicle when parked in the garage, that camera would come in handy...great feature on the RDX.

i totally with you coachrick. i'm surprised a safety minded, premium minded brand like volvo doesn't have backup cameras standard on their cars. granted the c70 is end-of-life model, but i'm definitely with you wanting that functionality. my wife's prius and our odyssey both have it and it's so useful.

i wanted to retrofit a monitor more for the backup camera functionality than gps....

I bought a wired camera a few years ago for another vehicle, but never got around to putting it on that one. It will probably end up on an old truck.

For the C70, while I could possibly just run the video wires with the wires from the license plate light, I am thinking I would rather connect it via wi-fi to a smart phone.

I'm looking into a good way to do that.

Wow...I had forgotten about this thread. Never did find/install a rear camera for the '13. Costco has something; but I haven't given the project much thought. We've had four other vehicles with back-up cameras and I might still put one on the C70 if we hang on to it.

I’m thinking about putting my otherwise worthless nav screen to productive use by making it the monitor for a rear view camera. Still searching for an economical product - I saw one that claims to be plug and play but nearly $200. Before I go down that path though, I need to play around in VIDA a bit to see if I can keep the screen permanently upright. The pop up nav screen in my ‘11 XC90 (with backup camera) is so slow I’ve already finished backing/shifted to drive before it even rises.

BD, if you have the navi then I HIGHLY recommend the Volvotech video break-in (VBB) unit. Although it comes from Netherlands, it is worth getting. Their customer service has been very responsive. See my posts at https://forums.swedespeed.com/showth...=1#post5299153

No need to worry re: screen staying up - if you leave the navi on it always pops up when you start the car. Then hit the steering wheel button to get past the legal warning. You then drive around with the navi map always displayed, but I like that. Screen folds down when you turn off the ignition. The screen stays down only after you "manually" shut off the navi.

My only caveat is to watch out for a low battery. So many things draw power in this car when the ignition is off, and I've added a SmartTop which increases that load. My VBB4 unit is sensitive to voltage drops below 12V - it will stop working and just show a green screen. The unit would then need to be reset, and it has a button on it to do so, except that the thing is installed behind the navi dvd player in the glove box (grrr) so you have no ready access. Instead, if this happens you need to do a hard reset by disconnecting a battery terminal with the ignition on and waiting several minutes - not for the faint of heart... The solution for me is to make sure you have a healthy battery at all times - no more than three years old. To me, the VBB4 and SmartTop are must-haves and very much worth the cost of a new battery every three years.

I fitted one to mine to play on my BluePower headunit I wish I'd never bought. It's about the only bit of the BluePower that does still work properly, and the only reason (well that and laziness) I haven't reverted to stock.

I purchased a half camera half LED that fits exactly into one of the license plate light holes....

had to run the wires out and back along the trunk opening arms being careful to ensure there's enough slack for it to move both ways (opening trunk normally and trunk lid opening backwards for the roof), without there being any wires getting in the way of the mechanism. Camera powered from reversing lights, video feed threaded thru behind the rear passengers right shoulder, behind the rear seat backrest cushion, behind the rear panel trim, under the door sill trim and into the glove box where the brains of the bluepower sit. Was tedious and time consuming rather than truly difficult.

Hey regtor - Do you know if the VBB units are available anywhere? I've emailed a couple of times and not gotten a response.

I have the camera ready to go.

Hmmm, I see that the volvotech website no longer has it for sale. I had good luck in getting responses to emails sent to team volvotech.eu (email address deliberately misspelled) Other than that I'm afraid I have no other leads.

EDIT - I now see reference to a new website v-vision.com but it fails to work for me. My only other suggestion is to try the support section of the volvotech.eu website (i.e. open a ticket)

Wow, didn’t mean to be offline for so long on this topic. Thanks José, and apologies for not linking to your posts in my comment - that was exactly what got me thinking about it a couple of years back. Yes, I have SmartTop and nav in both the ‘08 and ‘13, so I appreciate the insight re: the battery drain. I do have a battery minder that I can start using for one of them - mainly bought it for the project S70 that’s been on the back burner until the weather warms up.

Kevin, I plan to use the same camera/LED as you did and run extra long wire to ensure there’s enough slack for the multiple directions of the trunk lid. Glad you noted the installation is more an issue of tedium than complication.

Jim, there’s a company called NavTool that claims to have a similar plug and play setup as the VBB, for around $220 (no camera included). The website’s a bit annoying with pop ups so I haven’t delved too deeply into the viability of it yet: https://www.navtool.com/2006-2013-vo...interface.aspx.
Would be interested in anyone’s experience with it.

88domer - Thanks. I've been down the road with Navtool once. Late last year I bought a setup from Navtool for the C70. It was incomplete, came with instructions for a different version of their product, and support was very poor. After repeated calls and emails to support I asked to return it and was hit with a 20% "restocking fee". I wound up having to initiate a chargeback to get all of my money back from them.

YMMV - If you go down this road and it works PLEASE let me know. If it doesn't just be aware of their timeline for returns!

Happy Father’s Day to me, Happy Father’s Day to me. This seems to me to be the answer. It also seems to be too good to be true.

looks like the IPhone is the screen. Can an older iPhone just sitting in a drawer doing nothing be used as the screen?

The detailed instructions say you need both Bluetooth and WiFi turned on, so you’ll need a phone with an active service plan. It also requires the latest app version, so as long as your phone has the ability to do all of this you should be good.

I am curious to know how good the solar charger is for the camera. If someone parks in covered parking all day, will it draw enough from the ambient light to keep the camera charged?

Also, a word of warning re: how much of the license plate is covered by this frame. Check with your DMV. Some states (e.g., Iowa - at least a couple of years ago) require all of the printed information on the plate to be visible. I had a friend in IA who unsuccessfully fought a ticket, because his alma mater license plate frame covered the name of the county at the bottom center of the IA plate - even though the letters and numbers/personalized info on the plates give LEO all they need to identify the vehicle. YMMV.
