      Question Radar or laser Interference?

We are looking at new cars..Volvo, Acura, Audi. Some have radar assists for obstruction detection, active cruise control, blind spot monitoring, etc. But no one can tell us what wavelengths they use and whether they will upset our Valentine One. Has anyone had any radar interference problems with Volvos? Also, which cars have windshields that are not transparent to RF?

I found this info on Volvo, Mercedes, and Honda
      http://www.gizmag.com/radar-car-coll...-the-test/8813

Mercedes uses 24 and 77 GHz frequencies. The 24 GHz signals may set off K band detectors.

Volvo's forward-looking City Safety feature uses LIDAR, which they confusingly call radar. That shouldn't interfere with X, K, or Ka radio frequency bands used for traffic enforcement, but it may affect the Traffic Laser detection band of 820-950 nanometers.

I am not sure about any of the frequencies, but do get lidar (laser) falses on my Escort 9500ix and Escort Max. The falses seem to only occur during crank up, and backing out of the garage. The escort 9500ix and Max have a GPS feature so that because it should sense that I am going very slow, the alert is only a quick chirp on the 9500ix and not too annoying. Unfortunately the MAX seems to false for a much longer time,.. sometimes 15 or 20 seconds so I disabled laser alerts when I use that particular detector. Not sure how the Valentine will react, but I remember seeing some posts from a Valentine user... you may search for old posts and PM them. I hope this helps.

Thanks. Which safety systems (obstruction detection, active cruise control, blind spot monitoring, etc.) does your car have?
Could the Laser Interceptor V. 8 (Quad) be the culprit?

Car has everything but BLIS. Still sets off detector when LI's are off. Not a big enough deal to make me want to change cars... Thanks.

      City Safety is Laser.

Collision warning (incl. adaptive cruise controll) and new BLIS (MY14->) are radar.

I had to disable the laser detection on my Passport when I installed it in my 2011 XC with the tech package and BLIS.

Thanks! As you suggested, I found the following interesting thread:

Audi Uses radar for blind spot monitoring

Today I passed an Audi A7 in the lane to his left. As i approached, my Valentine One pointed ahead and squawked increasing signal, I'm fairly certain it was K band. As I passed the rear bumper, the V1 pointed to the side, then went silent. I believe that Audi's blind spot monitoring was causing the interference.

I have signals as well when I'm behind an Audi.

Question Need advice on safety systems...

From these forums, I have learned ways to deal with laser detector interference from City Safety. The 2015 XC60 owner's manual clearly indicates that there can be interference:
"NOTE: The function of aftermarket laser detectors may be affected by City Safety's laser sensor.
WARNING: The laser sensor emits light when the ignition is in mode II or higher, even if City Safety™ has been switched off."

We still have a week or so to finalize options on our 2015 XC60, so are considering other safety systems.

The new BLIS uses radar, which is probably also K band like the Audi and Mercedes systems...does anyone know? Rather than deal with potential interference, we will probably just use blind spot mirrors.

"The Pedestrian and Cyclist Detection with Full Auto Brake system uses the same radar sensors as Adaptive Cruise Control." The radar antenna is the one in the front grille. I have searched the manual and cannot find any caution about interference with aftermarket radar detectors as for the City Safety. Does anyone know what wavelength (band) this radar uses?

Has anyone experienced radar detector interference from ACC, etc. within your Volvo??

All, thanks for your inputs. Continued in the General AWD & FWD forum.... some answers are emerging.
