He built the car in no matter of time. The budget is always limiting in such time restricted conditions.

Had some time today to install the XC70 Lift Springs, the install went quite smoothly without any surprises. Took me 5h including a lunch break along with my 4yo helping fetch parts and 'inspecting' the install . Quite happy with everything so far. Only drove it up to 40mph and it feels ok, definitely more roll but nothing too crazy. Was worried about the rear camber being neutral or positive, but even with the lift there's still a slight negative camber which I'm happy with. There's a bit more rubbing up front now when turning full lock, will look into that more later.

...of course the first adventure was to the grocery store . It's only a Volvo.

Liking the red! That looks really tall, comparatively. Maybe a heat gun and a set of stops?

Nope, just an eBay can that I thought would work well. Haven't opened it in months, I should probably check it . Jokes, there a dip stick to check level and it looks ok. It's doesn't catch much, and I need to relocate it closer to the engine as it froze up last winter and almost blew a seal.

Yeah, or 5mm spacer, or the XC90 front end conversion I'm still working on. Just need a left axle before I can experiment.

I also expect it to settle a bit over the next few days/weeks. Not running out to get an alignment right away as it feels ok. The springs are also quite a bit stiffer which should help when loading down, had a fun time compressing then. The original springs are 14.5mm, the lift springs are 15mm. Not a large difference.

I didn't get an alignment when I got mine. It still pretty straight.... Even though I blew a cv joint /Axel on a mountain run....

Alright, so took it on it's first real trip today, Canoe, Kayak, BBQ, 3 adults, 2 kids, dog, and gear. Gotta say I'm quite happy with the lift springs. Sure there is a bit more body roll when unloaded, but they handle being loaded down much better. With the roof loads and pack the vehicle doesn't squat as much, actually feel better on road, and will handle drop offs and bumps with less rebound. Although I've been on the fence for years as I felt the stock suspension was enough, so far I'm very happy to have these on my XC. It actually makes the vehicle look more stock as the XC90 wheels and tires no longer stuff the wheel wells.... Maybe time for bigger tires?

Crappy photo, but this would be my rear end with similar pack on stock springs.

Thanks, and I agree. Only joking about the bigger tires, but I'd still like to test and fit the XC90 lower front suspension and axles, but that may not be until fall or spring of next year.

      Pinery Provincial Park!

      Towing in a headwind

Tire rubbing on the sway bar at full lock. Passenger's side CV is throwing some grease, but the joint feels ok...This is a Cardone Select axle, I have a spare Volvo axle I may swap in.

Well, stupid me. There's a small tear in on the CV axle boot. I guess what happened was when I was working on it last I didn't notice that one of the ribs on the boot was folded in and caused that part to fatigue. It's a very small tear, popped it out and just going to monitor if. Otherwise the axle still looks and feels ok.

I read on the badswede site that Xc90 2.5 front end is sufficient. What are your thoughts and what did you go with?

Bad Swede only suggests using the XC90 2.5t axles, but fitment isn't perfect. The stock XC70 axles have a spacer machined at the hub face where the XC90 axles are machined flat. You will need to add a spacer to the hub face of the XC90 alxe to properly fit in be XC70 hub/spindle.

What I have here is the XC90 lower front end. Still need to test fit, but I did a test run at the JY with it on an XC70 and it all looks promising with a small modification. The XC90 lower front end has cast iron arms and spindle, larger lower ball joint, and larger control arm bushing... A true HD upgrade. Also, the XC90 spindle mounts the strut mounts 0.5" higher which will add a small lift, but will also increase the tire to spring perch clearance (IPD cut up and welded plates to a XC70 strut for the same clearance) to fit larger tires .

Here's another preview of things to come...

...of course, I'm doing all this to avoid buying an XC90 for the ground clearance, and the wife has been eyeballing a 7 seater

My understanding was that you had to swap the out CV joint from the XC70 axle to the XC90 axle, is that not true? If adding a spacer to the front of the axle is all that is required that makes this swap quite a bit easier.

I think we need to put a Guide together after we complete this. DIY axle swap thread.

I've read mixed info, and am confused to. Just need specs on that washer to find or machine one.

Young Satchel has already done this to his XC, he had custom spacers made to fit on the face of the axle. Without them the ABS tone ring will contact the XC70 spindle. I'll be installing the XC90 spindle and hub so I will not need spacers to fit the axle, but I was thinking it's possible to get KO reducing washers of the right size to fit the axle face.

Unsure what sizes will work, but you can buy them in a range of sizes then punch out the center to fit. Custom spacers is the way to go, but the KO washers are dirt cheap.
