Thanks man. Originally I wanted a V70R, but I would have needed to lift and to find one in decent condition was tough for a decent price. In a way I'm glad I've got the XC because I would have been too abusive to the VR. I'm not comparing my XC to a VR, nor do I drive around thinking I'm part of the R club, so all of you who have invested into the R spare me the reality check. Honestly, I'm open and accepting of people's criticism, I like hearing people's positive or negative opinion, but at the end of the day...

So I jacked up the front end this morning to check the steering and everything is tight. Just got the XC back from the mechanic and everything checks out ok and aligned perfectly, don't know what those guys at Green and Ross were seeing...

Noticed a slight leak on the angle gear at the collar sleeve and I'm beginning to develop a parts list. I've noticed VIVA sell a lot for the AW55, but ~$300CDN import/taxes extra I'm thinking I need to shop around.

      http://www.vivaperformance.com/genui...-5-speed-auto/

Here's what I've pull off of VIDA

Parts list would be for 3,19,20,21,24,25. Would also need a quart of 75w90 GL-5 and exhaust gaskets. Anything else you guys can think of?

Why do you need exhaust gaskets? You just pull the passenger axle and it goes with 4 bolts.

I'll need to drop the drive shaft so I'll need to move the exhaust out of the way. I know I can drop the hangers and support it out of the way, but gaskets are cheap and I like having them I case I need to remove it.

I did my angle gear 2 months ago and I didn't touch the exhaust. Just unbolt the driveshaft and it won't go anywhere. Unless you're running planning on running it sans angle gear. Get some ball end hex keys and it'll make everything go faster.

That's what I'm getting at, won't know until I get in there. Most likely the AG is ok, but you never know.

If you're gonna do that I'd buy a cheap used one off ebay swap it, and rebuild yours. But I'm lazy so there's that.

Cheapest shipped is ~$600CAD, at half the price of a rebuilt on eBay I'd rather buy a rebuilt unit than take the risk on a used. I'll need a collar sleeve regardless and the additional seals are not that much so I'll see what I have to work with when it's out. The XC isn't a daily driver so I can afford quite a bit of downtime with it if need be.

I remember reading that, I'm unsure as well.

Would you say the snap ring is reusable? So far FCP is cheaper but doesn't offer the snap ring.

snap rings are reusable, unless you break it removing it.
I've never replaced them, even in transmission/transfercase rebuilds.

a good pair of pliers will save you a lot of headaches.

Ha, just realized that I can access the fill port on the angle gear from up top, makes adding oil a ton easier.

Actually it isn't that bad. I have all my heat shields removed and the 13mm plug is right there on the AG below the DP, just remove the plug, snake the pump in place and pump (helps if you work on a cold engine). A little spill just ends up on the splash guard, which doesn't bother me since the AG is leaking already.

I'll give more of an update later on. The job is completed just need to top off the transmission fluid and take it for a test drive. Work called me in for an emergency so that won't be until later on tonight.

As you guys may have guessed I was able to replace the collar sleeve today along with the transmission seal, axle seal, angle gear input seal, and I changed the AG fluid while it was out. The job was pretty straight forward, just like anything it's a process.

Ohhh, that's nasty. Getting up to this point was quite easy, pretty much just nut and bolt with a bit of lifting once the angle gear comes free.

Clean Up Clean Up. Splines on the angle gear look good to me, haven't seen a new one in person so I don't have anything to judge by.

Next up was tackling the collar sleeve. I've been pondering this for a while and kind of had an idea of how I was going to do it. Once the AG was removed I was laying on the ground with a few tools so I decided to give it a shot with what I had around, this is what I came up with.

Shade tree mechanic extraordinaire! I had to really hammer it but it came out with relative ease compared to what others have described.

For the seals a good pic set and a flat head works well to remove them. Trade size 2" ABS to push in the transmission seal and 1.75" for the angle gear, and the shaft seal in the collar sleeve can be done by hand.

      Ohh la la.

Drained the AG, filled it with 75W90 GL-5, and as always, install is opposite of removal. Clean up, top off the ATF, pack up the site, and after a test run no leaks and all is well.

Including lunch break, setup and take down, it took me approx. 7h. A day well spent, and boy am I glad that I got arroud to changing out that collar sleeve, looks like it was ready to let go.
