Comprehensive Information Thread for "Side Decor Kit" (BEWARE - Tons of Pics!)

DISCLAIMER: There are a ton of pictures in this post. This is because there is virtually no information anywhere online regarding these side decor kits. I wanted to make sure that all of the details of the installation were available, as well as pics of the kit from every angle in case somebody in the future is considering purchasing one. I wished that I could have seen pictures of it before I bought it. (Aside from Volvo's low resolution promo photos in the catalogs)

Today I finally got a chance to install a Volvo OEM accessory side decor kit. Special thanks to AMDG for helping me to locate this kit at a great price. Volvo hasn't made the kits in Willow Green for a long time, so I never thought I'd actually be able to locate one. I also don't think that Volvo has sold many of these kits as I've never seen another XC90 with one outside of Volvo's promotional photos. The prefacelift version (03-06) is different, and I HAVE seen XC90s with that style installed. In fact, there is one that I see in a parking lot often. I just have never seen the 07+ style ever. One thing that I love about the kit is that the wheel arch trim actually sticks down lower than the wheel well by about an inch. This makes less of a gap between the tire and the top of the wheel well which creates the illusion that the car is lower without sacrificing ground clearance. Additionally, the extra brushed aluminum trim on the bottom of the doors really ties in the brushed aluminum on the front and rear skid plates, as well as the running boards. The whole thing really completes the car's look. It makes the car look more modern while making it more muscular and sporty. The installation is actually fairly simple and I'll give some loose instructions and tips below.

Click here for the PDF of Volvo's official installation instructions.

A picture of my car before starting the process:

In order to properly install the kit, you also need to purchase a bottle of Volvo's "primer." This is applied to the paint to promote adhesion of the double-sided tape on the body kit itself. It is applied to the car's paint in the areas where the tape will make contact. You apply it by using the little cotton balls on sticks as shown in the picture. Two of these come with the bottle of primer. The bottle costs just over $70 from Volvo, which seems like a lot, but it's worth it. I also only ended up using less than 1/3 of the bottle to apply the kit. It WORKS, too. Once you apply the kit, it's not coming off. You have to get it right the first time.

The next step is to remove the trim at the bottom of the doors, the clear stone guard film, and the wheel arch extensions. This pic shows everything that must be removed. Removing the trim and wheel arch extensions is just a matter of using a bone tool to pry them off.

Then you have to hold the decor kit pieces up to the car and outline them with a dry-erase marker. This will allow you to know where to apply the Volvo primer. One tip is to make absolutely certain you don't apply the primer over the marker. It seals in the marker and makes it virtually impossible to get off of the paint. I made this mistake in a few areas. Luckily, I was able to remove it by using lacquer thinner, but it wasn't easy.

After all of that, you simply apply the decor kit as is outlined in the PDF above. It's really easy to install. They provide rivets to attach the wheel arch trim, however my rivet gun broke after I installed the first rivet, so I ended up using self-tapping screws which worked just as well. I painted the heads of the screws Willow Green, so they should actually blend in more than the rivets as well. Here are some pics of the finished product:

Last, but not least, here are the part numbers. Unfortunately, Willow Green (along with a few other colors) are no longer available. The kits I've listed in Italics are the ones that have been discontinued by Volvo. They do sell a kit which is just primed that can be painted any color you choose.

      XC90-07- Savile Gray-492- 31265740
      XC90-07- Caper Green-493- 31265741

      The primed version costs: $2110.34
      The prepainted versions cost: $2191.17

The kit comes packaged in a giant box, and inside the box, each individual part is boxed up in a separate box with individual part numbers. This would indicate that the kit can be purchased part by part in case one of the parts is damaged, or improperly installed.

For reference, here are two pictures of the 2003-2006 version on the XC90 that I see parked in a parking lot fairly often:

They just peeled right off and left no residue. Once you get it started, they come off very easily.

Not so if you're from a hot climate. Once they're really baked on there and cracked you need a hair dryer or heat gun, plastic scraper, and goo gone.

      +1

Though I suppose we could just paint the factor pieces silver, to match the silver in the front and rear bumpers.

Yes. They do sell just those pieces, however they will not fit on the car without the decor kit. The way they attach is different. They attach TO the kit itself, and then the kit attaches to the door. You could just paint your present trim in paint code 426 to achieve the same look.

It's the silver color that's on the rocker moldings. It's the color of the roof rack, the rocker moldings, and the front and rear skid plates.

Just to add a little update: The 72 hour period that Volvo recommends for the adhesive to fully cure has come and gone, and the kit is extremely well attached. I read a review of the prefacelift kit and people had complained about it not being adhered properly, and the pieces peeling and falling off. That's definitely not going to happen here. They are very well bonded to the body panels.

Also, I just love how it looks!!

If you update to the 07+ bumpers are you able to put the 07+ kit on. I like it a whole lot better than the 03-06 one.

I don't see why not. It should work just fine. The hood, fenders, headlights, tail lights etc are all the same shape, so all you'd need to do is change the bumpers to the facelift version. These are actually readily available on ebay.

Thanks for the compliments. I put a lot of time into keeping my cars looking nice despite their high mileage. I like being able to show people that you need not buy a low mileage car to have a vehicle that is truly nice. I noticed the made in UK label too. I wonder who makes it for Volvo.
