      15.5 V60 R-Design: Swedespeed Project V60

      Project Series Articles:
      1. Introduction
      2. K-PAX Performance Exhaust
      3. Skiguard 830T Cargo Box

      Dyno Results:

Air temps were nearly identical at 85F for the following runs. The transmission ECU contributes to reducing the gains. If exceeding the transmission software, boost is cut. The Polestar cars have higher parameters.

      Dyno: DynoJet 424x (awd)
      Car: 2015.5 V60 R-Design AWD automatic (22k miles)

      KPAX+Snabb Intake
      274whp | 348 lb-ft

      269whp | 347 lb-ft
      267whp | 347 lb-ft

      KPAX-only
      270whp | 356 lb-ft
      269whp | 342 lb-ft
      268whp | 354 lb-ft

      Stock Baseline
      269whp | 333 lb-ft
      268whp | 335 lb-ft

      And so it begins...
After a long decision process of going back and forth between a R-Design or Polestar V60, I went with the R-Design. It is well equipped with Platinum, Climate, 19" IXIONs and BLIS. Since temps are in the low 40F, I pulled the Summer tires and installed a set of Winter tires that we have used on previous swedespeed project cars. This wheel swap would not have been possible with a Polestar model because of the larger brakes. Fortunately, I did pull the tires as the passenger front tire had a large bubble that might have caused some excitement at highway speed.

      Winter mode:

The Volvo On-Call app to took a few tries to get working. it will be interesting to see how it performs.

One thing I did notice: folding mirrors won't fold. Is there some additional setting or physical switch that needs to be turned on. I have checked and unchecked the fold on lock box in Sensus but the mirrors do not move. Also of note, the mirrors are physically very easy to move, just a slight pull and they fold in. They do not appear to "lock" into position. Both mirrors are this way. Any ideas?

No idea. The dealer drove it about 25 miles from their one store to the one near me. I had only put about 10 miles on it coming home from the dealership. Smooth roads, no pot holes. One of the other wheels has a deep scratch, didn't notice it last night prior to leaving the dealership

      Beautiful car. Enjoy!

It is quite noticeable how much more space there is between the tires and wheel wells with the 18" winter setup on.

Brand new tires and a separation? Looks like something struck the wheel (causing the visible gouge marks) and the tire (there appears to be an abraded area/cut at the bottom of the bubble).

Fixed the folding mirrors. Pressing the L & R buttons reset the mirrors and they are now working properly. woohoo!

      Congrats Chris!

Nice choice in color! Rebel Blue stands out from the crowd...

So in your decision process, what made you not pull the trigger on a Polestar V60?

Congrats, beautiful wagon! How come your 19s didn't come with All-Season's like mine (Pirelli P7); this is a Northeast car, unless this came from a southern allocation originally.

Congrats Chris. I assumed it was a Polestar based on your recent posts.

I'm curious about the below question as well. would be interesting to hear your perspective as you've driven both.

Thanks guys - really appreciate it. I believe this was allocated to my dealer, arrived back in September.

Having spent the day driving the Polestar in CA to include a couple hours on the track, I really wanted one. Its the best performance car Volvo has offered to date. I had been going back and forth for a couple weeks.. But, as I got into the numbers, the price delta worked out to a little more than $14k based on the pricing I was able to get on a RD vs a Polestar. Plus I'd have to spend at least another $2k for wheels and snow tires if I went with Tire Rack's solution. The overall price difference put me outside my car budget that I really wanted to stay within.

I also have 18-inch and 19-inch wheels from previous project cars that i can reuse. So, adding it all up and thinking about the total cost of ownership, I went with the R-Design. If I didn't have two kids and college funds to think about, I might have gone all in but I feel pretty good with the decision. Plus, the RD gives me room to play around with parts from our advertisers.

All R-designs, in the U.S., come as T6 AWD (inline 6, 3.0L Turbo, 300 hp). At Port, they get optimized w/ Polestar software that raises the HP to 325 (and torque to 354).

Congrats, looks amazing! Let us know what you figure out on that weird bubble in the tire. Strange.
2013 S60 R-Design, Passion Red. Modified with red "R" valve stem caps that probably add 20-25 HP.

1998 S70. 120k miles. GLT that needs some TLC.

Polestar or not, the V60 RD is a very sweet ride. The lines and proportions are not notch, it really is a very nice looking vehicle. Nothing out there even comes close, IMO. I'm really surprised at how few I see in the Seattle area, considering all the older Volvo's I see. It's really the perfect size for an urban warrior wagon. There's not many wagons out there to pick from and the V60RD and V60P are the cream of the crop. If VW imports the Golf R wagon, maybe, Ford Focus RS, a hot hatch, maybe,
then again, not. Neither of those cars are here now and speculation is mixed if they ever will be, I'd still rather have a Volvo.
1982 Volvo GLT w/ small block V8, T5 manual tranny and a bunch of stuff. to handle and go fast
Gone and totaled V50 with a few mods, K16, Enem cams 3' DP and cat back, KW V2 coilovers, etc. I miss that one

Congrats Chris that looks very sharp. Did you trade or sell the VR? I see your signature has changed.

Very nice ride. It should prove to be soo much fun in the summer with stickier tires.

A lot of driving the past two days. We left the house in Northern, VA (near DC) with a little over 350 miles on the V60. I drove more than 700 miles in the past 24hrs and on Saturday, we drive back to the DC Metro ara, another 250 miles or so. Some snow covered ground near Harrisonburg, VA, near James Madison University. The sport seats in the V60 have been incredible in the 3 to 4hr sittings. The R-Design suspension is very compliant and comfortable for highway cruising, even on the rough patches. The 6cyl T6 is just a joy to drive - more than enough passing power. I definitely want to get an exhaust to hear the 6cyl sing. The wind noise at speed is whisper quiet and the extra cargo space of the V60 layout was ideal for hauling the family and gear. Average fuel economy for the trip with majority of speed in the 75-85mph range is about 24.5mpg.

      Nice pics, Chris.

I see you like the performance setting on the DIM. In the R-designs, I really like the Elegance setting, with its blue tones.

I keep flipping between the Performance and Elegance themes! I tried ECO. I tried to like it but its just not appropriate in a Rebel Blue R-Design.

Elegance reminds me of the P2 Rs. I plan to switch to it for the drive home today.

On my recent road trip up to Vermont I tried ECO theme and actually got the Drive-E logo to pop up.

It works really well in very slow traffic (set it prior, at higher speed); makes it for less tiring driving in traffic.
