Is it any difference between D4 and D5 except horsepower? 163 vs 181, but same Nm, 420. Thought it was the exact same engine.

Good question... True, both 420NM... Hmmm D4 still 5 cyl. D5 2011 has 205 HP

      D5 181HP (185) I think dates back to the P2 platform...

I believe the D4 is a typical adjustment they have done for countries like the one I live in (Norway) with high tax on horsepower. So they strip down the engines a bit, suppose it is just programming.

Is 2015.5 last model year for XC70?

      Choking it basically?

Somebody said: They are all 5 cylinders, with different bhp. The simplest way of determining what is best for you is deciding whether you want more power to the detriment of poorer fuel economy. We went for the D5 because I wanted a high powered unit, but in hindsight, wished we went for the D3 to gain better economy - we do 20K p.a. too. But they are all delightful to drive. Do we use the full 205bhp? Of course not, we are trying to drive more economically and the D3 or D4 would have given us the same quality of driving but for less money. If fuel economy is not a consideration, get the D5, the power is great!!

the d4 will be AWD (the normal D4 FWD is only 2.0 not 2.4 this is where the numbering system falls down flat on its face) the D5 will only be FWD.

the usual numbering system is: -
      D2 (1.6 8v)
      D3 (2.0 between 136-163)
D4 (2.0 again normally - virtually the same as the D3 minus software)
      D5 (2.4 with around 205)

now add the confusing elements in:-

the XC60 gets a D4 AWD which is 2.4, if only FWD the D4 is only 2.0, the D5 will only be FWD. (it changes every so slightly every model year from what i have seen)

to add further confusion the V60 has in MY2013: -
      a D3 (with 136), D4 (163) and D5 FWD and D5 AWD both of which are 2.4.

if you go back to MY2012 though to add more confusion: -
there was no D4. so you had the D3 with 163 and the two D5's but the D5 actually had lower emissions enough to be a group lower in FWD format.

Really what volvo should do is badge the XC60 2.4 AWD as a D5 AWD it would make far more logical sense.

      Yes...
The diesel 5 cyl is available as 163, 181 and 205. Same engine to my knowledge. But I have a D4 and it feels just fine. I have driven the other configs and not that big difference.

I want to know if there are people out there able to tell the difference between D4/D5... I prefer the D5 simply because more HP but Torque is unchanged... I have the feeling the D4 will do just fine!

If I look up my car in the national vehicle register, you can see it says my D4 is a 2.4 l with 163 hp (AWD).

Here you have a couple of pics:
      https://goo.gl/photos/zgAxt2tMjdGAobHm8

It's a 2016 Dynamic Edition with a D4 and AWD (living with snow 5-6 months a year the FWD drive version really makes no sense :-) ). It has most of the stuff available from Volvo. Very satisfied, feels much better driving than my old 2010 Audi A6. I've had several Audis, but always liked Volvo and this is my first one. Thought that I at some point had to own a Volvo XC70, it has a very classic yet updated design. Will probably stay with this car for quite a while.

      Thanks a lot.
Good observation. Winter tires are 17", summer tires are 18" and black inside the rims. Looks better with those summer tires. But winter tires are compulsory by law from November until after Easter.

Ok I hear you... Final question; the eyebrows over the fogs are blacked out?! Is that because you have a NORDIC edition or is that how they come these days?

It's a part of the Dynamic Edition. If you e.g. buy Summum you will get the classic look. Dynamic Edition has black high gloss "eyebrows" (haven't heard it being called that before - good name), same as you can see with side mirrors, roof rails and you can also see the tailgate is black where it says Volvo. The seats are sport and pedals and gear shift are R-design. The dampers are also a bit tighter. Would maybe not say sporty, but for a Volvo...you can at least notice the road condition.

Is 2015.5 last model year for XC70?

      Update D4 history from Holland:

In 2011 and 2012 there was no D4, there was the D3 with 120/163HP and the D5 with 205HP

In 2013 and 2014 the D3 with 120/163HP was now called D4. The D3 could not be ordered.

      In 2015 and 2016 the D4 was delivering 133/181HP. D3 was now available for the V70 110/150HP. Also the D2 88/120HP

Looks like they couldnt make up their mind... I think you must have 133/181HP unless Norway does not accept the Co2 etc. etc. Could be a country related issue. Correct me if I am wrong...think you said the same before with different wordings(...)

Go Polestar? Not available in Norway I bet?

      Thanks for clearing up.

About Polestar: You are right, Volvo has decided not to offer Polestar in Norway mainly because it is too much hazzle for them.

The extra tax for the horsepowers will still need to be paid for in advance to the authorities and the car also needs to be shown to public officials for approval after upgrading.

I know some drive over to Sweden, hoping a workshop still will do the job. Norwegian sold cars would have some kind of build-in prevention to avoid these software changes, but some manages to get around.

If an accident should occur with an unofficial engine adjustment you run a big risk both when it comes to insurance and high fines as well as being forced to pay the extra tax.

      I believe you would get 225 hp/450 Nm from a D4 though?

Since its introduction in 2001 the D5 engine, which was designed by Volvo, has been made at Skovde in Sweden. Over that period it has had various re-designs. No connection to Ford whatsoever

Yes Tony... to be honest I don't like cars at all...I look at them but they dont make my blood flow quicker.

The XC70 is from my first day in the US (1989) my dream but never had the money. It was only since last year I was able to buy the P3 after driving 18mths in the P2. Something about that car...classic but still nice and updated. Don't know what to buy next. Aiming for a 2014 model in about 4 years from now. I guess...

Hehe, nice one. Glad he came to the conclusion he did.

Small error in the article when it comes to weight, I believe. It says 2400 kg but it is 1735 kg for a D5. Probably mixing the weight of a fully loaded XC70. A6 is even more, 1855 kg unloaded, so it is not a very heavy car this size.

I have read several articles mentioning the lack of road feeling. The same motor journalists tend to say the opposite about cars as I have owned before such as A4 and A6. Personally I am not impressed of the great road feeling of these cars and I find my XC70 better than my A6. The little more tighter Dynamic chassis might play a role, but not sure how much. I actually never tested the standard chassis before I bought.

I read many similar articles before I bought the XC70. And because they tend to often compare with other premium cars, Volvo is being pushed slightly down every time. If you at the same time read articles about all the SUVs people tend to buy these days, eg Mitsubishi Outlander, Toyota Rav4, VW Tiguan and Mazda CX5 they are not compared with the premium segment and from the same motor journalists you get the feeling of fantastic cars with a lot of nice equipment. Five stars and "this is great stuff".

Because of this, I of course had to spend some time going the dealers of these cars to test drive myself. Really not impressed. Boring, out of style, sluggish entertainment systems, simple seats, plastic fantastic feeling in every knob, bad road feeling, very simple 4x4 system in some etc etc. No soul, no nice feeling. It's cars. They work.

The XC70 though has personality, style, comfort and soul. First time I drove it I just knew this was it. Not the most modern looking car from outside, but the design is indeed a classic. Inside it feels just right with a nice and very updated design and a wide range of electronics working very well, a lot of usability testing has obviously been done. The Sensus solution cannot be compared with the MMI of Audi and BMW, but it is well beyond any other of the brands I mentioned over. And the Volvo on Call app solution is just great.

I was very in doubt again after I had signed the contract and was waiting for the car to arrive. Was my choice too old fashioned? A lot of new models both from Volvo and others arriving soon? Now, after just one and a half month with the car I have no doubts at all. Just looking forward to every small trip with the car. Have never owned a car before where I could say the same, it has just been cars. This one has personality - with great style and pride.

Have you seen this one (not much talking, so should work for everyone not speaking Swedish and Norwegian):
      http://www.politiforum.no/Slik+gikk+...25-T2lrW0d.ips

Norwegian policeman's forum going over to Sweden to test XC70 and V70 on their test tracks. Fun driving, this XC70 actually weighs in at 2500 kg on this track because of all the extra equipment onboard.

For three decades the Norwegian Police has been just all about Volvos and I belive they have loved the size, stability and comfort of these wagons. But with EU tenders etc over the last decade, a lot of other cars have arrived such as Ford Mondeo and VW Passat. Poor guys, stuck in a Passat all day - how I would have hated it. Hopefully they will have better days in the future, the winner of the latest tender was just announced a week ago. Standard car will be the BMW 520 Xdrive Sport Touring, large police car Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and finally for dog patrol Volvo XC70. Bet we will see a lot of Volvo patrols across the country without dogs! No doubt I would have chosen a XC70 over a 520 Xdrive.

Imagine rolling your XC70 P3 next to a police version 520Xdrive at a red light... They would have to look 'up' to see who is driving Anyway...you did the right thing ordering that 70!

Hehe - and imagine if there is a 1.90 m officer in the rear seating, he will probably have to bend his neck to avoid the roof!

Good question. I really considered it, but came to the conclusion that the trunk capacity is just too small. With a family of four driving a lot to cabins by the sea and mountain, I would probably have to drive around with a ski box on the roof all year round. The trunk volume of the XC60 is 490 liters and XC70 is 575 liters. But remember the trunk layout of the XC60, you get the volume in hight and it is not practical. Even remember how those liters are measured according to EU specs. You get a lot of extra liters when you fold down the bar and fill up the roof to the very top in a XC70.

And then you also have the rear seating, it is more narrow in the XC60. Those extra centimeters are quite valuable if you are stuck with children's seats for some years. I can use the build-in seats for my oldest one, but my youngest is still too small.

So the real choice would have either been to wait for the V90 XC or go for a XC90. But the XC90 I find it too big and I really can forget to consider it anyway - too expensive for me. And I would never have owned a classic Volvo Herregårdsvogn.

      Best regards Henrik
