Difference between Variant 3 & Variant 4 Motors....

What yields the extra 18 hp for the R models? It is bigger exhaust, more boost, larger turbo? Since both models share the same torque rating, I assume both motors run the same turbo.

      Thanks,
      Jason

Another great queston, and personally I would like to know for my own edification
As much as I fool around with Volvos I never bothered to find out why .
My GUESS would be different electronics, a slight bump in boost, all of the above, etc.

All the hardware is the same, the only difference is ECU tuning from the factory. IPD upgrades both to the same output with their aftermarket ECU.

The real reason to get an R is the seats, wheels, spoilers.

I believe the only difference is the ECU, which allows more RPM's at WOT for like an extra few seconds.

I've heard that the R engines have a better balanced rotating assembly and a slightly different head. How accurate is this info? No idea.

Actually the boost is different, the RPM's are the same.

they are basically the same motor, where the varient stops making power...the varient 4 will continues to build power via more boost. Varient3:[email protected], varient 4:[email protected]

they both run the 15G Turbo., high-end is where you feel the differance. however, since they are basically the same engine, a ECU upgrade(IPD) will give you the same HP #'s in either car....35HP increase on the varient 4 & 53HP increase on the varient 3...which makes 275HP in either.
