JaredR: will let you know if i find the 850 articles in my automotive archives. recently went on a cleaning binge and threw out a bunch of stuff, but pretty sure kept the 850 stuff. If i find any of them will let you know.

The Ferrita on my N/A car has a low pleasant (g)rumble up to about 60-65, above that it gets a little loud for loooong trips. Anything beyond 1+ hours @ >65 becomes annoying. By now Im sure whatever sound deadening Ferrita put in the resonator and muffler is long gone.

Sounds good! looking forward to any findings in your archives!

Ha, 1 hour would be a very short trip for me in this car. I've been driving it around more locally so far this season but that's mostly been because I'm trying to figure out the brake issues, and also because it's the only estate car we have in service at the moment and I've needed to move some stuff recently. 2018-2019 I took it out a total of 26 times times, which totaled up to about 7k miles. My average destinations over that span were over 130 miles away from home!

I found 3 articles. EuropeanCar July 2003, Rolling Nov/Dec 2004, and Grassroots Motorsports, unofotunately no date, but my guess would be 99 or 00. I can scan and email to you if you are interested.

EBC pads out, Hella Pagid in.

That's about 500 miles worth of dust from the EBC pads. Absolutely bonkers. I thought Hawk HPS was dusty. And that includes about 150 miles on the highway of absolutely zero brake use.

Cleaned my wheels so we can get an idea how dusty the Pagid pads are.

Got in some new LEDs. Supposedly 9,000 lumens per bulb........not sure I buy that lol but H1 Halogen is 1,450 so it'd have to be WAY lacking to not be a massive improvement.

Uh oh. That's not gonna work. This is the high beam, which is at a wack angle in the ECE housing, so I need to be able to rotate it. This clearly is not going to work here.

Luckily, I have access to many files 👍

      .

Since I already had this housing out, I decided I'd just try both in the same housing and see how they do in the lows.

Early results are very promising......I'll break out the D700 tonight for further comparison......

EBC yellows are a fairly aggressive pad for even spirited street driving. What made you choose those over reds?

I would use Volvo/ATE over any ceramic pad. These cars are grossly underbraked as built and need aggressive pads, so ceramic is not even a consideration for me. Even slow cars need great brakes. I could jut be cruising down to the grocery store (well, ok, I don't go to the grocery store anymore, but you get the idea) at 31 in a 30 and have some clown pull out in front of me. My dad's NA has 302s and is getting Hawk HPS......

The stopping power of the EBC yellows was acceptable. The fact that they felt like they were going to shake my rear suspension apart was not. I could overlook the dust if not for that.

It's strange that they were causing that much vibration.

      297k.

Gave the Pagid pads a few drives to break in and they just weren't impressing me with their stopping power. So I took the S70 for drive with the ATE pads and realized the Pagids were straight up depressing. Had enough of this experiment and put the Hawks in.

Yeah I don't get it. It was really bad. Like I was driving over a rumble strip bad. Didn't come back with the Pagids but I only ran them for about 20 miles. Have about 70 miles lined up tomorrow so that should be plenty to make sure the Hawks are good to go.

Jared, My car did the very same thing after I painted the rear calipers and got some paint on the rotors. Try cleaning the rotors on both sides and see if that fixes the problem.

You would think that pads will eventually clean them real good but that wasn't the case on my car.

What did you clean them with? Brake cleaner? or something abrasive? Definitely could be worth a shot. Rotor surface looks clean on the outside but who knows how much of the story that is really telling me.

I'll give that a shot. Hmm.....I wonder if the rotors are contaminated from the EBC break in compound......that would be the only thing i can think of.

Did you compare all 4 pads when you removed them? IE: port inner and outer and stbd inner and outer?

They all looked really bad. I wasn't feeling a problem from the port side today so I have left it alone. Only felt it once with the EBC pads but it was so bad from stbd in that instance that I'm not confident it wasn't just vibration transferring across the delta link.

I put the previous rotor back in to see if that resolves the situation. I couldn't feel a problem, but I could see what looked like chatter marks on the rotor. I sanded that down too so if this works I'll throw it back in and see what happens. And I have reman calipers on order now........so whatever the problem is, it's getting fixed. The EBC pads also might not be dead yet.....once this is solved I'd like to do a better comparison between them and the Hawks. At least I am getting really fast at doing rear brakes. LOL.

Did you give the calipers a good bleed? Pads and rotors aside, chatter in a hydraulic system can be attributed by air. ABS fault is another thing but I doubt that could be only happening in the rear unless there is a mechanical fault at the distribution block.

I bled that caliper when I attempted to replace it (new caliper has pistons that weren't machined flat wtf so I had to abandon). Could try that again but it was fine before the pad replacement and started with the EBC pads before I touched the line, so I doubt that is the issue......unless it's possible that this issue has been present all along and the previous pads just weren't bothered by it. I was thinking caliper because I had to open it up farther than it had been open before to get the new pads in, but Ted's idea definitely seemed worth exploring given the disaster than the break in compound appeared to be creating.

850s have three channel ABS so (or at least 96+ does......never had a -95 ABS system apart so not really sure what's in there but it's certainly at least two channel) so it's theoretically possible that it could be an ABS issue, but the car is not showing any ABS faults so I don't think that's the issue. This also doesn't feel like ABS intervention.

Hmmm. Well, now you got me frustrated trying to figure out what it is. While I do enjoy trouble shooting...it proves difficult via the web.

Honestly probably not a lot more difficult than in person with this problem LOL. Did 7 miles dropping some stuff at the mailbox today and so far so good. Need an excuse for a few more miles now lol.

It’s been listed on the Hemmings site for at least a year, I believe. Not that I have an iota if interest, but I wonder what it would end up costing to get the car here and registered?

With broker fees, import taxes, shipping and misc port charges and custom fees. . Over 6k in fees( if buying for that price). when I was trying to running numbers last year and looking at different price ranges from different countries to import from. It's the import tax that gets all over the place because it's based on your buying price.

Got some cassettes to try out for today's adventure. I've been told by people who know WAY more about sound systems than I do that the original Pro Logic system in these cars was designed for tape, which makes a lot of sense given where tech was at the time. The sound was quite good, too, even with everything set in the middle with the stock V70 soundstage, with MUCH less distortion than I get from CDs or the Grom. I ended up turning up the treble just a tiny bit to get the sound I wanted, with everything else still set in the middle. I found the impact on the surround sound particularly remarkable; it was clearly working as intended even with it set in the middle, whereas I usually turn it all the way, up or close to it, to get the sound I am looking for from digital formats.

But then my heater hoses decided my cooling system refresh I had planned for this weekend after I got the remaining parts today to do cooling system/turbo/head-back exhaust all in one shot wasn't quite soon enough. So doing a little more refreshing than I had planned. Oh well, knew it needed to happen someday anyway so one more thing I can cross off the list of future projects 👍

Oil thinned down so much from the heat that it was coming out despite there being no particular oil leak. I didn't realize there was a problem for probably about 15 miles since the engine was getting air cooled on the highway at 75 and the low coolant light never illuminated. I initially thought it was an oil problem when the low oil pressure light started flickering on the exit ramp, so I killed the engine mid corner on the ramp and coasted into a driveway just down the street from the ramp. I was super confused when I got out and discovered that there was no coolant......until I realized what had happened and that the turbo had probably way overheated the oil and thinned it down to nothing.

The oil looks hardly any thicker than water, and this car had a consumption problem on 5w30.... There was a LOT of very thin oil in the IC hoses.

cyl 2 and 3 super toast everything else still 130-150.

Head off. Headed off to Carlquist for a refresh. Also FµCK working on -95s. Nobody should ever buy one if it's not yellow. This is absolutely insane the way these engine bays are put together. There are bolts in this exhaust system that I legit cannot remove. Idk I guess you need some kind of special tools to remove the DP? There is not enough space for a socket or any kind of wrench that I have to get on some of the nuts. And why is there a bracket attaching the DP to the block? Had to cut that off with a hacksaw because I couldn't unscrew any of the fasteners. Oh and the best one was the exhaust manifold stud that I couldn't unscrew because there was an EGR port in the way. Took me like like twice as long to figure out how to get this head off as it should usually take since every usual option was littered with opstacles.

So what happened here - blown head gasket, overheated due to loss of coolant, burnt valve, or some combination of the above?
