      850 interior with proper black 901. Mmm.. just do it!

      But if you think that 901 without Dolby is pointless, then you're wrong. It has several unique features - Radio Text, equalizer, 3-CD and diversity antenna system. There were configurations with 901 but without Dolby. That head unit was ahead of its time.

      Dolby unit makes full premium sound experience but 901 alone still has very nice package with features.

      That's certainly true, I just meant from a perspective of what it would make sense for Volvo to offer. I doubt very many people with 850s were looking to upgrade to a SC-901 in the '90s.

      Regardless, I'm getting excited for some black face 901s!

      Yeah, I really like the 901 in my old GLT without the Dolby speaker/processor. But it's definitely better with it!

      After a bit of testing, the RN and N coolant temp sensors definitely don't read the same. Either need to make an adapter to install the N sensor in the RN thermostat housing or repot the thermistor from the N sensor into the RN sensor. Certainly would be cleaner to do the latter.

      Yeah, it is missing a PCV fitting for the RN PCV. Most people do it the other way around and make the N PCV and intake manifold fit the RN engine. That has its own subset of problems that are more well documented.

      Basically I'm taking the opposite approach and making the car fit the engine instead of the engine fit the car. Ultimately it'll be a better way to do it since now I'm getting all of the upgrades instead of just some of them. This build has been a bumpy ride since it's a new way of doing it as far as I'm aware. My friend Zach who bought my white 850R wants to do a lower budget version of this build in a couple years, so we'll get to find out how cleanly it goes together the second time around on that project. If we build the new setup on another subframe out of the car like I did here, I bet we have the whole project ready to send to Ben/Bobby/Steve for the electrical work and tuning in a weekend or two.

      Our swap kept the N intake because I wasn't in the mood to mech throttle the RN intake. We've had zero PVC issues with the PTC PCV mod.

      Even with the ribs bent in it was still super bouncy. Needed a second support point.





      Hey look! No holes in the car!






      Still a little bit bit of undamped vibration on the outboard side. I'll probably stuff some rubber or something under the bracket between the lip and the strut tower to try to kill that. Also need to paint in 609 at some point.











      On to the throttle linkage. Needed to be about 15" long lol. Copper wire had a hook in the left end so I just hooked the ball on the throttle body and marked where the ball on the throttle actuator was to get the length. And, as usual, I̶ ̶w̶a̶s̶ ̶t̶r̶y̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶t̶o̶ ̶m̶a̶k̶e̶ ̶t̶h̶e̶ ̶p̶r̶o̶j̶e̶c̶t̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶e̶x̶p̶e̶n̶s̶i̶v̶e̶ ̶a̶s̶ ̶p̶o̶s̶s̶i̶b̶l̶e̶ the only thing I had on hand to do anything with was some bronze rod, so I just brazed that on to the existing ends. I had two throttle linkages on hand and used the adjustable end on both ends because brazing to a rod with a piece of fixed plastic on it was definitely going to work out a little too hot lol.









      Overall it doesn't seem as insane as I hand anticipated.





      Fits perfect, works as intended.







      This now leaves me with the coolant temp sensor as the only remaining solution. Decided that I am really not comfortable with having to make a custom coolant temp sensor for this car so I am going to solve the problem the right way. Fortunately, the 03+ thermostat housing has a huge amount of material surrounding the coolant temp sensor, so I can just bore that out and throw a sleeve in there that I can tap with the proper thread to screw in the 850 ECT sensor. I will need a patch harness to extend the original harness as it is too short with it in that position but that is pretty easy. Also have to do some minor disassembly to get the thermostat housing out again but even with that it still seems like the best and simplest solution. 99-02 housing for comparison, with less material to bore out.

      Thought I was going to wrap up the front brakes today but things are not going to plan with the front brake lines

      However I did get the rear calipers painted so hopefully I will get the mess up front sorted out this week and move on to the rear end. Hopefully. Lol.

      Decided I should put the rest of my brakes together even if I am having brake line challenges.




      Hawk HPS has been discontinued for P80 front caliper (bought from 3 places got 3 refunds lol) so I'm trying the Pagid pads since they have been good on P2 and they were too cheap not to give them a shot (and from FCP so warranty).

      I have Pagid pads on the rear of my R, no complaints!

      There's something about new brake components that just looks good good... the painted calipers and brackets are just icing on the cake!

      Knocked out a couple annoying issues tonight.

      As you may recall there was an issue with coolant lines all fitting together. Well the correct one surfaced in a early 01 V70 T5 at the JY a couple months ago. Problem solved.







      The brake line on the other side got super messed up with the approach I took there so I did this one the right way. Look hard enough you can see the brake line smoking in the first picture lol. Need to hit the JY to get another line for the other side.

      That's the same coolant line I replaced recently! Well different engine and coolant line config, but same in principle!
      I wish I used crimping hose clamps...thankfully I had a lift, I couldn't have done it on my back...

      All that work to clean the engine bay and no love given to the wheel wells...and to think this is my inspiration for my R hahaha kidding, of course!

      Oetiker clamps are flames. I think a lot of working on your back is a mindset thing. Once you're there it's not that bad. Fresh sheet of cardboard and it's soft and clean. Almost like working on a car in bed. Lol.

      I could clean the wheel wells but I'm sure I'll drive this thing in the wet so kinda pointless.

      Yeah so that kinda got complicated. Was supposed to be putting the Öhlins in but getting those rebuilt is turning out to be more complicated than anticipated so I'm going to just throw in fresh Sachs for now.

      I've tried multiple times to get my front lines off to not even a bit of success. Flare wrenches, PB blaster, mild heat nothing helped. And it seems the PO also tried so the hard line flare nut is nearly stripped

      That's a good looking tool box layout too. . . I need to find a cheap metal one on craigslist one of these days

      Where are they seized? At the caliper end and the hard line too? When I first did my brakes a few years ago I had to cut a rear hard line and reflare it, and replace the caliper because I couldn't get the hard line out of it.

      Caliper end comes off easy, at the hard line is where I'm getting issues.

      What is Ohlins? haha

      Sachs was the OEM provider of the Nivomats in the Volvo 850R, correct? Nivomats, or self-leveling suspension on the 850R, are only present on the rear suspension, correct? The front suspension on the 850R is not self leveling, correct? Therefore any front strut assembly can be used, i.e. an 850R's front suspension wouldn't require an OEM equipment delete like the rear requires a nivomat delete process.

      How would you compare Sach's front strut assembly to the Bilstein Touring Struts? What makes you choose one of the other? right quality, build quality, price point?
