If I was going to keep this engine in this car long term, I would definitely be doing all that. T-belt and PCV I'm going to swap over from the blown engine (PCV looks fairly new and ~30k on the T-belt), but the rest of it probably not. That time and money is going to go towards developing my VVT controller and the B5254T2/M66D swap, which will hopefully will be ready sometime before the end of the year. We need to pull the T-5R out of service to do the suspension work and my dad's V70 for a brake overhaul, and neither of those things can wait another 6 months, so the main goal is just to get this thing running so we can get rid of the parts R and get our driveway back (and have an extra car while one of the other ones is out of service). I'll be surprised if we go 2,000 miles on this setup.

The rain really killed the progress today (changed the PCV and that was about it), but I did score this on ebay:

More progress from the last few days:

Attempt at broken bolt removal. This was not particularly successful so we used the other manifold. Yes, I tried to take that screw out holding in that vacuum tree before I knew what I was doing.

      3

Looks complete, but, uh oh, what is that bucket doing down there?

The heater core hose fittings broke on the heater core side............not cool.

Yep. The one in the wrecked caR is busted too so I need a new one of those. I'm a bit concerned that the coolant lines from the engine are the underlying problem here; probably should have swapped them out with the other ones when it was not in a car.....

Despite the lack of coolant, we did try starting it up. Started on the first try!

Click the image for a video!

The vibration noted is not an issue; the caliper was vibrating against the spring. The front calipers are still tied up to the springs as the brake discs need to be replaced.

The only issue is that the up arrow is flashing. It started doing this in the wrecked car after it had been sitting for about 7 or 8 months and I assumed that it was either the contacts going bad in the PNP switch from it sitting or a result of any of the other insane electrical problems that started after it got hit (that car was literally like Clarkson's Porsche 928 after it got hit), but, surprisingly, the issue has come along to the new car. The trans was fine last time that car was driven, so this seems a bit odd. It felt fine and seemed to be starting in first gear a few weeks ago when I slightly re-positioned the wrecked car in the driveway.

So I did a ghetto heater core bypass with some extra coolant hose and hose clamps from the blown engine this afternoon.....I wasn't feeling the $50 for a new one from FCP once I discovered that there is one of those "sick Volvospeed mods" for this, but luckily I have plenty of time to contemplate this over the next few months of not wanting heat.

After that, it was time for a more extended run. The infamous up arrow didn't come on this time (or during any of the subsequent runs, but this was discovered.
      CAM00853

Oops. That's one of the red wires that goes to the starter. Pretty much all the warning lights for that side of the car were on (alternator not charging, low coolant, low washer fluid.....) Not sure how that got missed.

Fixed that, then started it again, threw a CEL, got a TPS code, unplugged that and plugged it back in, deleted the code, code didn't come back so all seems well there. NO WARNING LIGHTS!
      IMG_8839

Uh oh, why is it getting so hot? This seems to be the only problem but this is kind of a serious problem..........the fan is not going on. I shut it off right after I took this picture. The engine was clearly hotter than normal and the fan definitely should have been on so this is not the temperature gauge malfunctioning. Not sure what is causing this yet.

Turned the brakes! The new 280s that were headed for this car have been reallocated to the '99 V70 since I decided to put 302s on this car, but I'm not ready to mount the 302s yet for a variety of reasons, so these will do fine for now. The 302s most likely will not go on this car until the original subframe goes back in with the RN engine and M66D.

Just need to put the wheels back on now........and figure out what is going on with the fan.....

Well, sort of. There is something clunking in the front end and there are already new control arms in there so that's not it. Going to check the steering knuckles next. But we have just under 1½ hours of run time and about 30 miles so far and NO DTCs!

That is the plan! With two Rs as nice as these, I'll be getting a dedicated winter car if/when the '99 V70 can no longer handle all of our transportation needs during winter weather

Finally got started on the paint today after washing it yesterday.

Looking pretty oxidized after the clay:

Worked over the entire car with Meguiar's #7. If this stuff works the magic that some people claim, I'll be pretty thrilled with only losing this much paint to the oxidation. I probably lost this much on each panel on the first 850R when I polished it with abrasive polish.

Waiting for the #7 to work its magic. For those of you who have used this stuff, yes, what I am doing here violates absolutely everything the instructions on the bottle say.

Initial results are looking promising. It will be very interesting to see how things look tomorrow when I wipe the #7 off after letting it sit overnight. What better way to listen to Garrison Keillor's last Prairie Home Companion than almost running the battery flat by listening outside on the car radio while you make your car look like new again?

Looking very pink this morning after letting the Meguiar's #7 sit all night.

      IMG_8953 by Jared R 945, on Flickr

I do not recommend letting this stuff bake on in the sun. It was kind of a pain to get this stuff off on the panels that saw the most sun. Luckily #7 is fairly water soluble, so I was able to take care of this problem pretty quickly once I realized that it was my only decent option. I should have gotten out here at like 6 AM, not noon.

This is after I got it all wiped off. The small oxidized area was intentionally left untreated so I had a control area to compare to.

      IMG_8960 by Jared R 945, on Flickr

At this point, I rubbed the entire car down with the #7 again, but this time I wiped it off before it dried. Finished off by waxing it.

Hey, that looks pretty good! It isn't perfect, but I think it is good enough for as long as this car is still living outside; this is probably where I will stop until I have indoor storage for it. It looks really good if you are more than a yard or two from the car. Any closer, and you can see the scratches and other imperfections that the non-abrasive nature of this technique is not able to do anything about. I forgot to take a picture of the control area after the second application and wax, so I'll do that tomorrow. Overall, I'm really impressed with how well this came out with so little paint loss.

Here are the promised photos of my control surface:

Here are some of the artifacts that the non-abrasive nature of this technique can't do anything about:

But it still probably looks like a new car to the average non-enthusiast observer.

Looks great, just needs some forever black or whatever your favorite formula is for the bumpers and a repaint on the roof strips and you're all set. I did my roof strips in bumper grey this winter and they came out great.

Thanks! Yeah, I definitely need to do the bumpers. Not sure what I'm going to do about the roof trim yet; I'm considering putting my roof rails from the wrecked R on this one so these may be going away completely.

Tried out a potential solution for the lack of reflective coating on the badges tonight.

This is an extra R that I got off of the black sedan I scavenged parts from a few months back:

This is some paint that we've had in stock for......longer than I can remember actually:

      Application method:

I think that's better than it was. Certainly no mirror finish, though. I might try polishing it after it dries.

Here is method #2 that I finally got around to trying tonight. The result is certainly better than the first method, but the question is a) can I actually get this stuff cut out to a reasonable enough shape to make it look good? b) will it be durable enough and not just peel off at the first opportunity?

Anyone have info on the spool time of the K24 vs the 16T? Currently trying to decide what turbo to use and then go into all out parts gathering mode since I start my co-op job next week and it looks like the CVVT aspect of this project might turn into my senior project......so I really need to get the new engine and transmission installed this fall before I go back to school in January.

In other news, I finished fixing my badges!

I have road tuning logging data showing a 16t spooling from "idle" (atmospheric pressure) just coasting along in 3rd gear to 15 psi in 1.2 seconds and holding steady after that. That was good enough to send the S70 T5 from 35-80 mph in 3.9 seconds in 3rd gear on Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, 41 degrees F, flat road. Snabb intake, IPD turboback exhaust, greens and stock intercooler as a finalized stage 2 Hilton tune.

16T spools very fast. K24 is probably a little slower. 16T bolts on, K24 is mostly a bolt on.

Finally got this car fully into service, at least for the moment until the real build starts. The terrible clunking in the front end was resolved by swapping in the sway bar end links that I took out of the T-5R. All of this stuff is going away in favor of new stuff when the real build starts so they are fine for now.

Given this, I thought it would be a good idea to put a spare tire in it. In the process of that, I noticed this cutout in the cargo area deck. What is this for? Is this something relating to the 3rd row seat? None of our other P80s have this.

Finally got around to fixing my heater core bypass. This is a variation on the Volvospeed mod for this problem that involves NOT cutting up your original piping!

      Here is the issue:

Takes some doing getting this hose over the lip on the pipe. Using some wet water is very helpful.

Don't buy your hose clamps from Amazon.

      End result:

Hmmmmm.....working outside at night......I need a barn lol.

No, definitely not. That stuff doesn't work for crap for applications like this. I figured someone would ask about this.

Here's how you make wet water:

Oh my how quickly things change. Over the course of two days, this car went from being 4th on our vehicular depth chart to being our only car in service! My mom's '04 V70 threw an ABS light a couple weeks ago and started kicking in the ABS every time she hit the brakes last time she drove it last week, so that put it out of service, and, on Friday night, not only did I have the collision with the deer in the T-5R, but the '99 broke its exhaust pipe just aft of the catalytic converter. Gave it a much needed wash, glaze and wax and then finally got the heater core hooked up and the new tweeter from ScottishBrick put in so this car is hopefully good to go for a while while we work on getting some of the other cars back in service!

Then I had to use this car to go make my entry into McShake's photo challenge thread! Still need to dye that bumper trim, though.

You should be able to just pull the fuse to the ABS system. It won't be active and will trigger the warning light, but at least it won't engage itself and will make the car drivable.

Installed my 302s on this car today since it will likely be seeing more action with the T-5R out of service.

      These things suck.

      Oh that's so much better.

These have got to go. Going out tonight and hopefully going to get some new DOT4 brake fluid along the way so I can get this project wrapped up tomorrow. Hopefully this will fix the issues with the way the brake pedal feels (way too much travel before anything happens - probably could be fixed just by bleeding the brakes but I have no idea how old this fluid is so I'm going to do that, anyway).

      Made some good progress today.....

Finally got it registered in Massachusetts! Sad to not be able to pretend I'm from the coolest state anymore, but I don't want it registered in the wrong state anymore now that it looks like I will actually be driving it a bit more. Did all of 105 miles on the Vermont registration over 7 months lol. I'll be doing about triple that in it on Monday.

      DSC_7196

Then on to the Dolby install. Hey look! The holes in the carpet are pre-cut! The holes to bolt the amp in there were there, too, so no need to wedge it in with layers of plumbing insulation foam like I did in the T-5R (oops, forgot to take a picture of that........). Disturbingly, when I pulled that panel under the glovebox so I could get at the area behind the dash, some water came pouring off of that panel. Need to check the sunroof drains. Moved the SC-901 over from the T-5R since it's not in service at the moment. The CD changer in it wasn't working again today......not happy about that. Got the Grom hooked up though so at least I'll have that.

      Dyed my bumper trim today.

SOOOOO Much easier taking this stuff off than trying to tape it off and do it all on the car like I did it on the T-5R. 67° in the basement vs. 45° and windy in the driveway is a huge step up, too.

      What a mess!

After that was done we went for a drive to go look at a piece of land that would be big enough for us to build a barn on for all of our Volvos and boats. Got about 22 mpg on local roads and 28 on the highway (flowing between 55 and 70). It felt slow on the first entrance ramp on the way out so I did a WOT pull on a nice long uphill ramp coming back home from about 20-55 mph and it's only boosting to about a third of the way into the white. Seems like it should go farther than that but not sure I will worry about it for the probably short time that this engine will remain in this car. The ControlContacs that are on here were also every bit as disappointing as I had expected. I didn't really get a chance to do any good handling tests, but ride quality is horrible and they sound like a snow tire - exactly the same complaints that agravadr had with his real DWSs. These are so gone as soon as it's warm enough for some PSSs.

Also discovered when we got home that we had installed some deer ticks from this piece of land......so now that I finally start getting this thing set up well enough to use, we have to pull it out of service to deal with that. Accepting recommendations on how to remove them!

Came up with a strategy to deal with these guys..........

Built a tripod with some pieces of this super hard tropical hardwood we have sitting around.

Then put some paper napkins on it

      Well now we're getting somewhere....

Poured some denatured alcohol on the whole thing.

And of course disconnected the battery so we don't blow up the car or anything crazy like that.

A piece of tissue soaked with denatured alcohol put into one of the little containers that we had one of the deer ticks in killed said tick in about 15 minutes. Hopefully we've found a scaleable solution here. Took another one of our containers with one of the other ticks in it and poked some tiny holes in it and then placed it in the car so we can tell when they're all dead.
