      Yikes!

Well this ought to be fun to get out.
My dad decided that the Volvo tool didn't look like it was worth $100 (I agree after seeing the illustration), so he built his own in about 20 minutes.

v1 didn't quite do the job:

      DSC_7767

Yes, that drill is beyond the elastic limit. Don't worry, no useful drills were harmed in the making of this tool; all drills featured in this post came from our bin of retired drills.

v1.1 worked quite a lot better:

      DSC_7770

Sorry, no pics of the install......basically we took a furniture clamp and put the back end on the other side of the delta link and a 2x3 between the clamp end and the delta link. Between that, a BFH, and a C clamp over the handle of the furniture clamp, we finally managed to get it in.

Only had time to do one today. Looking forward to seeing if this fixed the handling problems. I sure hope so because we're taking it to Annapolis tomorrow (shameless plug for ZZZZZZZ'S ANNAPOLIS MEET on the 26th that I'll be at in this, yes you should come if you're in that general vicinity....people as far away as Boston and Long Island will be there) and has been a bear to drive on the highway. The other side visually looks as bad but is not clunking so hopefully isn't behaving as badly. We also swapped the Titans with the 215/45 PZeros onto this car to get whatever improvement we can out of that, too. They were flat spotting baaaad having not moved since the T-5R had its run in with the deer so it's probably good I got them off the T-5R anyway given that there is no imminent progress on getting that car back in service.

We took this car out for a ride to pick up some food and the ride was surprisingly harsh with the green springs and also not really much noticeable improvement in handling, at least at low speeds. Not sure if it's the yellow springs or R sways (or probably both) but the 850s both ride and handle better than this setup. I can see how ScottishBrick wasn't crazy about the stock S70 suspension with the AS3s.

The front tires are also looking pretty worn for having about 20k on them. Haven't measured yet but not impressed with this at a glance given that the Defenders are rated for 80k miles. The rears were new about 3-4k ago due to an epic fck up by Pep Boys (long story but let's just say that Will's got the right idea on this one; we're so going to Costco next time we buy Michelins).
A lot of ingenuity displayed there!

It definitely took quite a bit less than an hour, even with the modifications we had to make to it. Most people don't have Bridgeports in their garage, but then you could easily pull this off with quite a bit less if you didn't have to make additional modifications to it after the initial construction. Drilling off center through an existing hole is not going to go nearly as smoothly without a milling machine.

Pretty boring VIDA scan. Was hoping there would be something in here that would explain the poor fuel economy but it's not looking like it.

That cat code does suggest an unmetered air leak. What's the long term fuel trim and shifting angle of the camshaft?

It's an old code; we think it's left over from before we had the exhaust welded up.

It's in vehicle communication. Then you can read off realtime values for each module.

I'm gonna have to look. I may have one in the basement. Not 901 but nice and should have code. I think...
It worked great but long story - I punched it and the display died. I replaced with another off eBay.

LOL. You mean the stock 816 from your '99? We have a couple of those, too, but we're trying to do the 901 upgrade tog get the Pro Logic. It really does sound that much better.

So it feels like there is some sort of misfire under load at low RPM. It is very momentary and only seems to happen as the engine passes through certain speeds. I tried doing a few 25-35 mph pulls in 5th at maybe half throttle to see if I could get it to set a DTC but that didn't work. However, after I got home yesterday, I found out that the spark plugs have not been changed since we bought the car at ~160k I think I know what our next project is going to be.......... Still runs totally fine above 1500 rpm though.

YESSSSSSS it finally set a DTC tonight! I hope it's something juicy and not some bs evap code or something. Average fuel economy is also down to 25½ mpg from 27 on Sunday so something good better be going on here.

If the plugs are really that old, I would assume the coils, etc are as well? I would bet you can easily lose 1.5 mpg from plugs. Could it also be winter fuel blend related? Good luck chasing it down.

On the turbos at least the plug change interval is every 20k (and they start to have spark blow out at that time anyway) and 100k for coils. Have you removed the coil pack cover on the motor? That will reduce the heat the coils are exposed to and lengthen their longevity.

Curious to see what VIDA says about the wagon. My bet is an evap/air leak causing a rich condition in response.

The coil cover is still on this car. We had one coil go bad like 4 or 5 years ago that was replaced but the rest haven't been touched.

The fuel economy was crap during the bad purge valve situation but we're not getting any other symptoms of a vacuum leak like we were then. I'm sure the winter fuel isn't helping, but 25 is wayyyy out of range even considering that. This car used to never average under 28-29 even on a bad tank.

Smoke/ether test the intake anyway? What mileage do you think you should be getting.

Oh. Hey. Did the mileage drop when you put the pirellies on it? Because tires make a huge difference. Wide ass Pilot super sports versus skinny nokian snows cut 2.5 mpg off on extended highway for me.

LOL the DTC was a P1081. Total waste of time and excitement. Predictably, it didn't want to start after reading that code, either. Didn't feel like taking the laptop out in the rain so that's off the handheld OBD scanner but I'm hoping to get out there tomorrow with the laptop and see if there is anything else hiding in there.

Mileage did drop with the PZeros but not a huge immediate drop from what the Defenders were getting at the time. We were getting in the 28s on the highway with the PZeros when we first put them on. iirc it was doing somewhere in the 29s with the Defenders in similar driving in the time shortly before the switch. I think it ended up looking like about a 1-1.5 mpg loss, pretty much in line with what I was expecting.

I thought you were doing better with the PSSs than the Nokians; not so?

We used to get 31-32 mpg cruising at 65 on the highway and 34-36 mpg around town.

The M56H is best suited to speeds below 40 mph. It's a terrible transmission for highway driving. There are about three stoplights in my town and it's slow and flat. This is a recipe for excellent fuel economy in a stock manual P80.

The automatics do horrible because they aren't going fast enough to lock up the TC. I might be able to break 30 mpg in the T-5R if I put it in 3 and drove around at 35 mph so I could lock up the TC, but I'd be pretty much guaranteed to eventually get a speeding ticket driving that fast. I'd have to ride around in 2 to get the TC to lock at 30 and that's worse than riding around in 4th with the TC unlocked.......so I'm stuck getting like 24 mpg around town in that car.

I guess I don't understand the physics of a car getting better mileage in stop and go situations, but it sounds like your "city" driving and mine (in and around DC) may be different! Anyway, interesting info.

Ahh see if you had a me7 car that was torque demand those tricks wouldn't be necessary to get the torque converter to lock up. I get 24.5 mpg around town in the pewter t5.

I disagree about the M56h being bad on the highway. What rpm does the na sit at at cruise? I see 2600 at 70 returning 33 with a t5m.

Yeah, I can see ME7 being a huge win with an automatic. The TCU drives me nuts in the 850s. I know the TCU can be tuned but I'll probably never bother with it. 24.5 mpg around town is still really not that good. Rewiring the TCU to my brain is really the only good solution in these cars it seems.

Do you have the 3.77 final drive in the T5m? The NA has 4.00........you're turning 2600 rpm @65 in that thing.

Took the Work70 out to the lumberyard today. Getting lots of good use out of the cross bars.

I had some Rhino bars on my 2000 V70 and they took so much load (about 120KG) they almost touched the roof and then sprang back to original shape when the weight was removed. The rails were fine though. :-)

Lol. I hate parking near those potholes.....you never know when someone is going to come by and splash your car. Those holes have been getting really bad recently, too.

It's a tight fit, too! After living here about fifteen years, they FINALLY repaved my road, but probably only because we're secondary to the main avenue. I'm grateful, but I just feel that we're the last street to deserve the treatment. There are certain roads that are purely unnavigable, they've been neglected for too long to be anything but unacceptable. My poor struts. But we need more tax cuts!!!
