      T5 Tires 215 50 17 vs 235 45 17 ??

Time to replace my crappy Pro-contacts @ 21k miles..

I noticed a 235/45/17 vs the OEM Standard 215/50/17 I currently have on there..

Any reason to go with the 235 45 vs the 215 50 ?

Funny you should ask. When we traded our first S60 for our current one, part of the deal was we could keep our 235/45/17's from our old car. The service department was closed when we picked it up so we had to drive on the 215's for a few days, and even my wife noticed the difference. The car was squirrely on the highway and didnt handle as well. Love the slightly wider tires.

The 215/50 tires are mounted on 17x7 wheels and the 235/45 tires are mounted on 17x8 wheels. That's why they are so different. We had the 215/50 tire/wheel and it performed great in the rain and snow, but in dry weather and on the highway you could notice the handling was a bit weird if you caught grooves in the roadway.

Forgot to mention this. We kept rims and tires.

Volvo also recommends a steering deflection limiter be installed to prevent the tires from rubbing when you upsize. I believe it slightly increases the turning radius.

I've had the 215s on the car, and for everyday driving, they are plenty wide. I could see wanting the 235s if you went to the track.

My plan is to look for sticky summers at the 215 width for every day driving.

215's are very skinny for this car. If you want to use the same 17x7 rims, they can handle 225's.

Yes, on those wheels, I would do a 225/45 or possibly a 235/50 (if fender well clearance), because 235/45-17's on 7" wide rims are too wide in combination with too short of a sidewall, according to accepted standards. You have to take both tire tread width (235) and tire sidewall aspect ratio (45) into account. Too much pinching of the tire by having too narrow of a rim will cause tire sidewall deformation while turning, which makes for poor handling and excessive uneven tread wear, than the tire is designed for.

I have those tires on my '12 T5 right now (235/45/17). They're quiet for the passengers, but they make a "sticky floor" type of noise outside. Definitely louder for people outside, but the wet traction and steering response has been great! I've put about 5K on them so far with no signs of wear. Definitely a more aggressive looking tire as well. I've lost about 1 MPG from my Pirelli Cinturato P7 AS+ tires that I had on before these.

Went with 235/45/17 - and SOO MUCH better. They just feel much more stable and responsive..

Happy with the BF's so far - pretty quiet, very sticky. Overall - highly recommended.

P.S. - No clearance or rubbing issues.

P.P.S - The OEM ProContacts lasted 21k miles to the wear bars on two of them and 1/32" on the other two - Mixed spirited driving - dry climate.

I still believe that 7" rim is a tad too narrow for those spec tires, so hopefully you won't have any wear issues.

And talked with the techs there -they think they will be just fine. So we shall see.

This calculator addresses the fender room/wheel and tire location, but not the tire protrusion and angle of that protrusion from the edge of the rim (you can see it in the illustration).

It shouldn't be a problem unless you are a very agressive driver. Also be sure to rotate the tires every 5-7K miles and have the suspension aligned at least once per year.
