It's where you shim up the AC clutch with something to get the gap back within spec. The classic raw material for this is a bread clip. Some people also use zip ties or sheet metal. We didn't have any bread clips so I cut up an old oil bottle to do it on my T-5R today. Works great, my AC doesn't quit after 5 minutes anymore.

If I recall correctly, it's a way of getting the AC clutch closer to the magnet that engages it -- so it doesn't come in and out.

But I thought that was only for the P1 S40s?

Ok new problems we found in the first 15 minutes: sunroof does not respond to the switch, it looks like someone tried to pound out a dent in the roof or something so there's an area that's a little messed up, couple dings in the left rear door, no Dolby module hooked up to the 901, paint needs to be buffed out.

On the plus side, the trip computer says it's averaging 27.5 mpg and I have no idea when that was last reset so that's pretty good. Things are looking pretty good so far. I'm driving it 130 miles to grab a driver's door in original 609 for my R tomorrow morning so that should be fun.

Hey jared, maybe instead of doing a manual swap, while fun and nice to drive, maybe stick a AW-55 if it can bolt up! It'd be a good time to experiment with some TCU tuning!

Yes. That would be the donor.... So a trans that can't take NA torque, is one off, one year only, takes special very expensive axles and has the longevity of a fruit fly but yields inferior gas mileage and driving pleasure to a manual 5 speed at great cost and detriment to the value of a (maybe) one of one car?

      Oh wow

I actually passed on looking at the 2000 S70 today. It seems like it may in fact be.. a true piece of crap.

At least the 2000 V70 XC has the AW42 AWD trans.. like you said! .

Yeah I am not interested in dealing with any automatic. This transmission is behaving nicely so it'll probably end up in my T-5R eventually (that trans is definitely getting worse) only for the sake of keeping that car in its original config

Only negative excitement so far is a bad oil cap gasket. Might hit up an AutoZone or similar tomorrow since L&B is closed weekends. It's getting great fuel economy; averaging over 32 mpg......I'm averaging about 28 mpg in my T-5R. Most of that is going slow though because Virginia (seriously, seeing a traffic stop about every 15 miles in this place). I drove it 130 miles in NC yesterday morning and only averaged 30.2 since traffic was flowing at 70-85 most of the time. It's also quite a bit faster than my T-5R, although the turbo lag is a lot more noticeable.

Be careful rolling through VA -- there are some counties towards MD/DC that can throw you in jail for a day for speeding, from what I heard.

That is a state law; some counties are just more excited about enforcing it than others. Reckless driving I believe is over 80 or 15 mph over the posted limit, whichever is less. It is freaky driving through that state; I was going about 5 under the limit (which seemed to fluctuate up and down completely at random) most of the way and there was hardly anybody passing me......almost every car that did pass me was registered somewhere other VA. And then we have PA and CT where everyone's rolling by the speed traps at 70 in a 55 and they don't even have the radar going lol.

My favorite part about VA are all those signs. Coming over the border from NC on 77 there was a sign about every 100 yards for about two miles telling you all the stuff that is illegal in Virginia. My personal favorite are those ones at the bottom of every big hill that say "use flashers if below (insert posted limit here)." It's like they are encouraging you to speed lol.

If you ever find yourself on I-81 S, near Blacksburg, there are signs that say "slower traffic keep right..." and old people/tractor trailers that blissfully ignore those signs.

I hope the ride home for you and your folks went smooth and safe. Can't wait to see this thing IRL, it looks great next to your T-5R! I'll have to stop by!

Also win for incredible gas mileage all around.

Well, until you get past Richmond on I-95 you really can't go much faster than about 40 or until after 11 PM.
After that the traffic just disappears and that is the area where you can get into trouble!
I'm not familiar with police presence on any of the other main VA roads.

When I used to drive up and down the East Coast twice to four times a year, I would have to unplug my detector at the VA border and just slow down for those 3-5 hours!

Don't forget the 395/495/95 capital belt and all that Northern Virginia slowdown...

202k on the trip to pick up the new door for my R:

and 203k on the trip home. My dad turned the oil cap around the other way after the first 200 miles to see if it would be any better and that seemed to reduce the oil leak significantly.

Finally had a chance to take some decent pics this afternoon and figure out what we actually have to work with here.

Goodbye dirty Perfos......with Continental ControlContact TourAS . Could not get rid of these things fast enough. I took on an exit ramp at like maybe 0.5g on the trip to get the door for my R and was very disturbed to hear that this was almost understeer city. Also, they have no grip, are loud, have no grip, ride harsh, and have no grip.

Hello Volans with Nokian zLine AS! Hopefully these will be a lot better. Can't wait to feel how they do on a car with stock suspension.

      Mmmmmm......Karelian birch....

TAN leather wheel in not awful shape. I have a feeling this might clean up pretty well.

Driver's seat is gonna need a little bit of work.

And so is the passenger seat:

Back seats need some cleaning up:

      And definitely some conditioning.

WAIT WHAT?!? And yes the wires definitely look like they are hooked up. Need to try these out when it's not 80 outside. Is this the only known x70 in the US market to have heated rear seats aside from the Boston Coach V70s?

Something scratched up this whole side of the car. It looks 10x worse in person but I think there's still a pretty good chance it'll buff out.

      Ouch.

This roof is totally fµcked in this corner......this also looks 100x worse in person. Anyone have thoughts on whether this is something a good PDR guy could help? Hopefully there is something short of replacing the roof (yes that is possible, I've seen it done) that can help this since I really don't think my dad wants to get into all that.

Rear bumper obviously needs a respray and we'll see if this tailgate can be saved when we finally get around to dealing with that. And he needs a "T" for the T5 badge.

Engine bay doesn't look too bad

Wow those bumper brackets look mint! West coast car FTW.

      DSC_0023 by Jared R 945, on Flickr

      And there you go......434-21.

So, let's see, what do we have here? A '98 V70 T5 SE with crazy options, cool history, reasonable miles, seemingly great shape mechanically, but a little rough around the edges cosmetically and in need of a little optimization. Seems like pretty reasonable value at $2k.

I agree. This is a nice find and I'm glad it ended up in the hands of skilled and knowledgeable Volvo wagon enthusiasts. I'm not sure if you told us whether or not the old tires had any grip...

Good call on the wheels. What will you be using for the leather? That's next on my ever-growing list. My driver's seat looks like absolute hell and I'm afraid it's too late to do anything about it, but I'm hoping I can prevent further wear at the very least.

Also that engine bay is far cleaner than what I'm dealing with. Yes, your new addition to the fleet is an absolute prize, for sure. I want to stop by again when we both have actual time to chat about it.

Also of note is that my dad was getting in the mid 33s on the trip computer for most of the drive home and was getting 35+ for the last portion from CT to home. I have my suspicions that those numbers may be a bit optimistic, but he definitely had significantly lower fuel consumption than I did. He thought he had enough gas to make it home when I was almost out in Western CT, and we started both of these tanks just north of Lexington, VA, 636 miles from home.

For removing the pilling on the alcantara, use a fabric shaver or a Bic razor. Then clean with a white terry cloth or microfiber with damp water and dry appropriately. Clean until towel remains white. You can also use Sonax alcantara cleaner as I've heard some nice things about it. For the leather, it looks like some of the dye has been worn off. I'd recommend contacting ADV Leather solutions in CA, getting some leather paint/dye mixed up, and airbrushing it on. Works great. PDR guys can do some amazing things so I'd look into it for the dents.

I think I have some brand new Volvo carpeted front floor mats in this color if you're interested.

The rear birch piece is cool - I believe it's "fake wood" compared to the front, though. Rear seat heaters came on some V70's but it's not too common. Cool car and should clean up nicely. My friends shop in Norfolk, VA had a customer with the same color combo but in an S70 T5 (I believe the manufacture date was 1996). I'd post pics but the whole Photobucket thing...

Thanks for the lead on the leather repair. I've been down the fabric shaver road before but this kind of leather restoration is beyond what we've had to deal with before.

The carpets are intriguing for sure. Lemme see what route my dad wants to go for floor mats. He definitely needs something for a driver's mat, just a question of ruber vs. carpet and whether NOS mats are really the best idea for this car in our current situation. Our yard and street is kind of a mess so our mats tend to take a beating.

We were actually just talking about whether that rear piece is fake and we were leaning pretty strongly towards fake. I don't see any way you would be able to make a veneer that shape and it doesn't look the same as the other pieces, either.

Looks nice, and definitely a unique Volvo! Best of luck to you and your dad with it!

Dare I say consider a professional detailer for the interior, that alcantara and carpet has taken a serious beating and staining. I bet a steam cleaner would do wonders

Agree with Josh and Sven about the seats - light colored alcantara tough to clean - back seat needs a re-dye IMHO. Love the Volans on this car.

I do have a spare "T" kicking around that I can send you - just PM me your address. Thing is, it probably came off a GLT so I don't know if the font is the right size - it very well may be.

      Very nice project car!
