      BLIS Retrofit Possible?

      Hi

Lately I’ve been lucky and found a few parts cars that I’ve been able to pull a few accessories off.

Today I picked up an almost brand new set of running boards and a OEM trailer hitch.

Just wondering if I come across a parts car with the BLIS mirrors if those can be retrofitted on a XC90 that did not have that accessory.

      Appreciate the help.

Yes you can. You need the entire mirror housing containing the camera and wiring, and then the new tweeter housings containing the BLIS LED and labels, and then a BLIS switch, and then you need to code the vehicle at a dealer (download the BLIS application)

Curious if you have any luck completing the retriofit. I have been acquiring the parts for my '07 xc90 and was not sure about the software component. Can this be performed with VIDA or is dealer required? If you must go the dealer route...what do I ask for? (Also what would this roughly cost?) Thank you very much.

I spoke with my mechanic (volvo specialist, non-dealer0 and he seemed confident he would be able to help with this but mentioned that the hard part would be finding what module to update/program. Does anyone know where this would be for BLIS? Upper Control Module, Electronic Control Module? Thank you

Also, has anyone here done this successfully? I recall reading on a thread on an unrelated topic (cant find atm) that they did a partial BLIS retrofit (passenger side only?) successfully...appreciate your help.

Left and right camera modules (LCM/RCM) get power from CEM (F30). There's a LIN connection to CEM (D:24) and another LIN connection between the modules. The switch for BLIS is "diode coded" so needs to be used unless you have a decoder ring around (someone created part of one a few years ago, no idea if BLIS was included). I'll guess this is all pre-wired, guess being the operative word.

Issue for me on this one is that I cannot find the software PN that activates this in any of my old documents (CEM or ICM) and there's no mention of BLIS as an accessory option.

I might try and put the whole thing in with a proper OE switch and a 5A fuse and see what happens. You'll see 3 flashes then nothing if it's working.

If someone has the PN for BLIS software or more detail on the software loads required, please post.

** See note in VIDA about LIN connection between camera modules being pre-wired after MY05.

This doesn't read like a very fun project.
That said, I wonder if anyone has tried to re-code the BLIS to function slightly differently. I would love if it some genius found a way to have it, the ultrasonic sensors (for rear parking assist vehicles) and the steering angle sensor work together and emit beeps and do the 3-flash prompt on the BLIS light if a driver attempts to change lanes while the BLIS light is on and the parking sensors detect an object with X feet of the rear of the truck.

That’s a completely unrealistic request. It would require deep development knowledge of the Volvo control units and the ability to change their firmware to do what you want. They are not open systems. The blis hardware is in the mirror itself and the blis led is controlled by the blis hardware. The park assist has a range of only a few feet and is completely wrong for the type of detection you are talking about.

It would be much easier to use an arduino to detect if the blis lamp is on and the steering angle above x degrees and hen sound the beeper in the dashboard and flash the red warning lamp. That is doable.

Oh, I never implied it was an easy project. It was simply me thinking about a true geek’s technical challenge

Thank you very much for the detailed response...I got sidetracked with having to rebuild the DEM, REM, and replace the oil pump Now back to the fun stuff.

The 5A fuse that you mention...is that a new fuse? If so, what location should I be looking for? Thank you.

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/fo...ic.php?t=88194 for a visual. The CEM is under dashboard driver side and up above the brake pedal, modesty panel needs to come off get to it. If there's a 5 amp fuse in position 30 today, I'll be surprised.

So I put in the drivers side mirror and tweeter cover as well as the BLIS switch. I checked the CEM and can confirm the 5amp fuse is in pos 30. The passenger side has not yet been installed but so far no dice. The blis indicator doesn’t flash on startup nor does the light in the blis switch go on. Hoping that once the passenger side is in this may change. Will keep y’all posted.

I have now hooked up the passenger mirror & tweeter shroud.

Still no change...also, I noticed the BLIS switch does not light up (backlit or led) I changed the switch to one I knew was getting power and confirmed all 7 slots are getting power.

So looking like I am going to have to reach out to the dealer. Would this qualify as a “software upgrade”? Thinking it may be worth asking for a software upgrade and not even mention the BLIS retrofit...I am assuming the dealer would treat this much differently if I go in requesting a specific software application download/“option self-install”...thoughts and guidance much appreciated.

You might check with D5T5.com. On this page they talk about being able to configure BLIS. https://d5t5.com/article/volvo-change-configuration.

I've only heard of them with respect to being able to install the TFT gauges on P3 XC70's and have never actually used their services.

Very strong lead...i have reached out to confirm if VDASH may be an option for me. Thank you!

I think that may be your only option. I looked at my portable VIDA for the last vehicle detail readouts with both vehicles. The 08 with blind spot shows up as yes, the 05 without blind spot shows up as no. The ECM must have a configuration for BLIS as active versus reporting the modules. In my opinion, it was certainly worth a try to plug in and see, sorry that it did not work out.

So my local Volvo dealership shared that this is not possible. (At least wouldn’t quote me)

A representative from VDASH replied back to my inquiry and shared it is possible to activate BLIS with VDASH and will require the CEM Pin. I have followed up for more detail will share progress.
