      P1800 dashboard

      Hi,
I am working on a 1971 p1800e. It will not be in 100% original shape and since the dashboard is slightly damaged i was thinking of putting the aluminum front instead of the wood front in it.

My question is: Is the top panel the same during all year models of the p1800?

Thanks, that answer my question. It is not the same. I have 2 round holes for the smith gauges where you have 1 long square hole.
Is that the same for all aluminum ones?

I've always wondered, if I peel the tacky faux wood sticker off my dash, is it bare aluminum underneath? Maybe it could be sanded and polished...

Yes it's aluminum underneth. You could recover it with contact paper or go for real wood by using venier (gle it on the aluminum). All the early (pre 70) cars had a waffle like finsh to the panels.

70 and 71 are the same, 72s are different. This is a picture of my 71. The lower part is extra and has gauges for ambient temp, vacuum, ETG (Exaust Temp), and voltmeter.

Yes. Good eye. If I had to do it again, would put it in a different place. I find my self without a place for my phone charger, so that's another project for later this year...

That's too cool for words. Every time I put laundry in the dryer and push the Start button, I think of doing that to my car...

How difficult do you think it'd be to fabricate a whole new dash plate? You could move gauges around or use different sizes (for aftermarket gauges that actually work), add your own holes for switches and buttons, etc.

I was admiring this finish, on a Lotus Elite that was on eBay recently:

So many little ideas for projects....

      take a look at volvo1800pictures.com
They have a gallerey just for interiors. There is a guy on the West Coast with a beautiful Orange 1800ES with new gauges. I'll try to see if I find a picture.

Well, there's this guy, who appears to have made his own dash...

      http://www.volvo1800pictures.c...5.htm

I mostly just want to get rid of that awful 70s rec room faux wood stick-on stuff. And maybe shorten my shifter, somehow. And get a smaller, suede steering wheel. And and and...
