Time to Freeze! Install & Review: D088 Drop-in IC, XC90 Cooler, Snabb Spacers & Tons more...

Recently, I discovered a pretty large oil leak and a misfire on cylinders 3 & 4 and a ballast went out to boot. It's been running rough, to be honest I though it was motor mounts but apparently I was wrong. Being this is my DD and I've noticed a slow and gradual loss of MPG over the years, Well anyway's it's about time to overhaul the R.

      The complete list of parts.

      Fluids

      Mobile ATF 3309 - 12 Qaurts
      Motul 300V 5W-40 - 6 Quarts
      Motul Mocool - 1 canister
      Volvo Anti-freeze
      Distilled water
      Liqui-moly Ceratec - 1 Canister
      Liqui-moly Rad Cleaner - 2 Canisters
      Liqui-moly Engine Clean - 1 Canister

      Factory

      OEM Oil Filter
      OEM Oil Cap
OEM Oil level sensor gasket (Opened up to see inside the pan, leaking)
      OEM Spark plugs
      Bosch 160 Amp alternator
      OEM Idler pulley
OEM PCV system (Complete), main pipe and both banjo bolts replaced
OEM Upper & Lower Rad hoses (lower was dry rotted)
      OEM Thermostat (Whole new unit)
      Bosch Boost sensor
OEM Gaskets and crush washers for all the misc things that go along with a complete front dissembly.
OEM Misc Bolts and new OE Clamps for hardware
      OEM Petcock (IMPORTANT)

      OEM Plus

OEM XC90 Oil cooler (Brand new)
New Quick release setup with fast draining
Horn Relocation - Front air dam is now flowing a ton better
Custom Iginition harness + All new coil clips (You will see in pics, rated to handle 500F + Quick release)
Wrapped and spliced the whole front engine loom with TESA tape
      Osram Cool Blue Boost D2S
      Valeo OE Ballasts
Side mount OIL OEM cooler for Engine oil (Still a work in progress, sourcing correct lines and a block off plate)

      Performance

      D088 OTE
      D088 Lower charge pipe
      D088 Drop-in Intercooler
      DEI Gold Thermal Wrap
      Snabb Aramid Intake Manifold Spacer
      Snabb Aramid Throttle body spacer
      Silicone Vacumm lines
New ATE 1 way check valves for the Vacumm system

Cleaned (This is important for thermal reasons, everything was pulled off the car and cleaned top to bottom)
Injectors were sent out to southbay injectors (Huge thanks), flow tested and sonic cleaned and new O-rings + Seats were installed!

      Radiator + Fan
      AC Condenser + Compressor
      Power steering unit
      Accessory Bracket
      Whole engine block
      All intake piping
      Intake manifold
      Throttle body
      Sensors, clips, etc.

The car now runs like a swiss watch, I used to have mild vibration in the cabin. I now have next to none, MPG has improved by atleast 20% but time will tell, no more oil leaks, throttle response is much better. Engine temps, the big winner, the engine runs ICE COLD. The intake manifold never gets more than 85F (I'll test it with a heat gun soon). I can actually touch it and it feels luke warm, not hot. The OTE pipe is also MUCH cooler, atleast 30-40 degree's less (I suspect it's from the DEI wrap, better engine coolant but most most of all the harness from the oils dissapating the heat.)

Thanks to Connor at Viva and Southbay Injectors!

Nice Job! I hate how the wires are left so exposed when removing the Coil / Sparkplug cover. Your solution looks great, how hard we the insulators to install? One thing that I did not see mentioned here which is on my list is to replace the clamp that connects turbo to OTE pipe.

Nice job! That's a lot of stuff to take on at once but at the same time it's a lot of "while you're in there," items.

      Nice oil
      I'm using exactly the same.
Why not go with 1 step colder plugs? It doesn't hurt

Highway was 19 at 70mph and 24-25 at 60 mph. Now Highway at 70 is 23-24 and 27-29 at 60 mph. All done on flat even road, same test performed in the same place, same temps as well.

All instant readings. Probably can achieve more with a clean car, less than a full tank and put on my NOT bent summer rims.

I actually hit 30 mpg for a minute straight at 55-56mph on cruise, that has never happened to me on flat road.

How do you like the Osram CBB?
I just put a set in my SR tonight but haven't taken it out on the road yet. I'm not really into all the lighting and don't have the most knowledge on the subject but I put one Osram bulb in and kept the other old DDM Tuning 5000K bulb in and didn't notice much of a difference. Maybe they need to break in and of course I need to drive with them.
Both bulbs are in now and I just need to take it out this week one night.

They do take a good 20-80 hours to fully break in, both max brightness and color. I'm about 50 into into mine and I definitely see a difference. It takes time, personally I'd throw a DDM in one and a CBB in the other and put it against a wall. You will defintiely see a difference, even if they are not broken in.

NICE! What clip did you use for the ignition harness QD plug? I want to do that but I'm having a hard time finding a suitable plug. Also, is a special crimp needed for the plug leads?

Looks like a great setup! Iím hoping to do the exact same thing to my V70R when I get back from Afghanistan next year...

OP, how are you liking it? Temps staying nice and cool? How are you measuring the oil and intake temps, VIDA?

Any tips and tricks to doing this install? Iím thinking that my friend and I will tackle it some weekend. Weíll likely allot two days just Incase we run into unexpected crap...

Iíd love to talk with you about the install via PM if youíd be willing to.

      Thanks!!

I'm definitely liking it, I'm not logging it but it is 100% noticeable. Keep in mind I did a ton more than just the IC so it is subjective. Also, I'd set aside atleast 3-4 days, and replace everything in the PCV while your in there.

I agree. Do the PCV at the same time. Never going to get better access with the engine in the car. I just did the snabb IC install (was cheaper since I wanted all of the piping and had none to begin with) and it is a world of difference. I think there is more bs involved with the snabb install however. Personally I'd do whatever is cheaper for you. Both will be massive improvements over stock. I posted my experience on my thread. I think this was more straighforward. Snabb could be improved in some key areas.

They all touch on the ends/endtanks, it is even tighter being the D088 is thicker and at least with my R actually touches the hood release a bit.

Interesting. Havenít heard that with Do88 before. Maybe sized to complement Do88 radiator? (which I would never ever ever buy because itís too rigidly attached for my taste)

Well it reconnects with all the original hardware just with extended bolts, exactly the same as stock just a tid bit thicker.

If you were to introduce a thicker radiator you MIGHT have a clearance issue with the hood release. That said my car was wacked in the front at some point and the panels don't perfectly line up so that may also be an issue.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but what did you use for the front mount ATF cooler? Did you have to extend the lines that run to the radiator?
