Yeah it gets updated regularly which is good. But I think we have another option. It definitely drives different and gets the power down instantly

but 33xx unit with white solenoid IS already listed as matching one, thats actually "recommended" setup from what I know.

Yeah that's what I understood also. The 2006 land rover has a 33505. I imagine it would work similar to the xc90 V8.

The 3350x also do not have copper coils in them which interests me.

Lack of coil seem to be normal for 33xx units, from what I noticed. interesting info on Land Rover, what version is that? LR with haldex? that must be one of those baby freelanders ,for sure?

Oook, so when you say more options you mean more vehicles for us to pull haldex units from. I was think you were just swapping out selenoids into the V50's original unit - my mistake. More vehicle options would be a blessing, i havent seen a V8 xc90 yet out here.

I raided ebay until I saw a part that was listed in OP but there are a few different 3350x units around. I looked for an ebay listing that had a pic of a white solenoid sensor then check the description for the vehicle it was pulled off.

My car is a 2006 s40 T5 AWD manual. I have really noticed a snappier throttle response and more power to the rear while cornering and that's with DSTC still switched on.

      ...k
I would be careful with this last digit as it may mean day&night in terms of compatibility. Same as with 2220 and 2228 units - looks identical, works totally different. White solenoid can be identicat trough whole range of DEM's as its only pressure-control device, but the main "brain" is actual DEM unit (atleast to my understanding). That 3305 unit may be totally different from 3304, or may work identically/better. Would be great to test it if someone have cheap access to it.

Just finished testing of 5WP22228-02 swap.
      Didnt work on mine
Immediate fault on dash before even starting up engine and on 4wheel hanging test - red triangle as soon as clutch was released and AWD engaging.

Time to give up and throw a towel My car just doesnt like them

EDIT: I will be selling both of the units if anyone is interested in trying or looking for solenoid parts.

05' unit 5WP22228-02 with black solenoid (confirmed working on XC car)
07' unit 5WP33504-01 with white solenoid (unknown condition)

I will be looking to only recoup my losses so will sell them exactly for what those cost me.
      PM me if interested.

thanks, ah well, It was a gamble anyway and this time I lost. Highly possible it will work for someone else or some XC owner may snap it off me trough ebay/FB as those are hard to get in EU.
Pity though, was really hoping for more RWD bias

Out of curiosity, which XC was it tested on? I might be willing to try it on the V50 - also MY05 - and have installing it on the '02 XC70 as a backup plan. I really, really, REALLY hate buying something and having to resell it when it doesn't work. That's why I've been so anal on finding a unit that is as certain as possible to work.

hq_ - the 05' module was from 2006 XC90 V8 ocean race. I bought it off Austin V70R (few pages earlier), he said car was driveable and displayed no error messages related to AWD. For me that was best shot and fair enough to take a risk. On this module it seem that my car is just not liking it rather than it may be faulty.
that other unit I bought (07) was not confirmed as working and sold only "as is" for parts by previous user, so its a high chance something there is not right, either module or solenoids or whatnot. was still worth a shot.

I know this is a little old topic but i was wondering something

The rear wheels only kick in when the front detects slip. So the front wheels already turning and the rear wheels are not. So when the engaging there is gonna be a moment of huge stress on the drivetrain. You can even feel that when the rear wheels kick in. Its like an impact gun.

Wouldnt it be better for the drivetrain to not have any slip difference?

Yes i want to do the mod, but there arent that many V8's in The Netherlands

EDIT: It might be better for the diff clutch and the angle collar, but a bit more stress on the rear diff

It seems I'm getting torque to the rear wheels even with a light acceleration. Never noticed "a kick" and drifts very effortlessly in the winter. Maybe previous owner has changed the controller, don't know...
I noticed this from my under car gopro footage (whilst chasing vibration that was caused by a bad rear wheel bearing). When the rear haldex/diff assembly twists upwards, it's transferring torque: https://youtu.be/OgbySedz0o0?t=36

At normal driving there is nothing noticable. But im more talking about that launching from a stop, mostly on wet when driving over those white lines at the traffic lights. Rear wheels kick in fast enough, but there is just a moment where the slip and i can only imagine the amount of force going trough the drivetrain at that moment

This so Hip ~ all these FWD Guys Loving AWD , LOL

My 2007 AWD had the Instant On , but certainly 80 Psi would have Held more Tq. from Tune - seems like it would be way more Fun ~ Powering out of the Curves . .

Has to be Harder on the Clutches thou , seems I recall someone with Heavy Ford Model was Burning Clutches Up as They always did very Tight Turns on inner City Streets or Small sharp 90 Degree Turns . .
Like Taxis Duty ~ so wondering how everything Holding Up ? & Winter Mode - Have to get Plastic Studded Snow Tires ?

Really nice thread, contemplating this. Are there anythings to be weiry about doing this? I am running a K16 and struggling bad for grip, initially thinking of getting a Limited Slip Diff but quite interested in this and to work out a rough cost for it to compare if its worth it. Are there any limitations for power at all on these?

Dom, talk to that fella from UK who did AWD conversion on Focus, he used Kuga 4x4 parts and XC V8 haldex controller iirc, that should give you some indication. That thread is mostly about upgrading our AWD gen2 controller to gen3 controller on actual AWD cars, not sure if you will get much info about FWD->AWD conversion here. (or maybe someone will point you to c30crew forum with C30 4x4 converasion aswell...)

      AWD D.E.M. Swap

      Hello,

I have successfully swapped the D.E.M with the PN 5WP33504-01 from a salvaged 3.2L XC90 into Leia. Leia is my proud and first project, she is a White 2006 S40 T5 AWD with an automatic transmission and 136,347 miles. She is a little dirty right now. White wall letters, window tint, muffler delete, and a couple other things.

Initially upon installation, I was worried as I can 100% confirm that the newer module did not have the copper coil that my O.E.M. had inside of it.( I forgot to take pictures but you would know what copper coil I mean if you do this). I thought this would not work but decided to install it anyway.

Following Michael's @MyNameIdeasWereTaken installation instructions I completed the swap. I can confirm that indeed my car became a totally different animal. The rear tires instantly spun from a stop if you're even a little harsh on the throttle. Around a bend, if you go to fast the rear wheels kick out. I was a little terrified for a minute then grinning ear to ear.

      Prices
      -$142.56 (5WP33504-01 D.E.M. from Ebay)
      -$0 Allen keys (already had)
      -$48.34 (Rhinogear ramps from Walmart)
-$6.36 (Rhinogear wheel chocks from Walmart)

      Total= $ 197.26 Post Colorado Tax

Congrats, lucky you. The same p/n didnt work on my 2005 (
just for the future reference - can you confirm p.n on your OLD haldex controller, and confirm if your car is equipped with DSTC button on the dash?

      thanks!

I do not have the DSTC button on my 2006 AWD AT model.

The old D.E.M. part number is 5WP22227-01 and HAP511. It is important to note that this D.E.M. did have a copper coil inside and the newer D.E.M. from the XC90 did not.

      Thanks
Cant find my old pics with Pn of my OEM haldex unit (I *think* I also have *2227 at the end), but I also had a case of "my unit has coil, newer does not). Apparently it doesnt matter anyway.
main difference though is that I do have DSTC. Another succesful swap I remember was also a non-dstc car.
Can anybody recall any succesful swap to the car with DSTC?

Anyone do this upgrade on a facelift model? I have a 2010 s40 t5 m66. I only tried one DEM with p/n 5WP33504-01 from an 07 (supposedly an XC90 but my buddy wasnt 100% sure). Either way it didn't work.

Some funny thing ive found. On the brochure of the XC90 here in the netherlands the brochure says from 2006 and up the instant traction comes as a standard on all XC90's
