So I've had some time to monkey around a bit today, here are my results:

      - The PCV is for sure in need of replacement. Hoses are rock hard, and this also seems to be the spot of an oil leak on top of the engine going all the way down the transmission. Hopefully thats all it is, and not a RMS.

      - Oil in the intake / intercooling tubes for the turbo, which have all been replaced with this SAMCO brand tubing. I did research which told me that this is normal except I'm not sure it is.

      - Accidentally lost the bolt for the turbo tube that runs over the spark plug cover... if anyone has an extra let me know!

Brixt Begins, Part 2 by Charles Conto, on Flickr

      - Needs a new throttle cable, this one is disintegrating inside the casing and was pulling away from the firewall.

Brixt Begins, Part 2 by Charles Conto, on Flickr

      - Took the cowl off to clean it from the 8 billion pine needles and soil calling it home. Much better. However to my surprise this car doesn't have a air pollen filter on it. Was this an option, even for R's?

      - Proceeded to vacuum the interior to "acceptable" levels. The back was the worst under the seats. Also I'm missing a few back interior pieces so if someone has a lead on those let me know. There is only one 850 wagon at the JY I visit.

      - I couldn't even begin to read the timing belt cover, so that's getting done ASAP.

Brixt Begins, Part 2 by Charles Conto, on Flickr

      - The previous owner wired in a fan switch for some reason, and it ends in the cabin with a toggle switch. I need to find out how to reverse this, because to my knowledge their is no reason the fan shouldn't be coming on...

That's all I can do for now. EXAM TIME!

Next time you have a chance, pull off the distributor cap - I would bet that oil has made its way in and fouled the contacts which is causing your stumbling issue. Worth checking the plugs as well. Oil in the intercooler piping is normal to an extent, yours don't look too bad

I lost that same intercooler pipe bracing bolt, I replaced which some metric bolt but don't recall the type...

My R also didn't have a cabin air filter

      Good luck on exams!

Funny you say that, I checked the plugs. Cheap autolite, can't wait to get some real volvo plugs in there!

Plug seems to show no major problems with the motor but I would definitely replace them with Volvo plugs.

I did see that toggle switch in an earlier pic and forgot to ask about it. Maybe whatever switch that is supposed to turn the fan on is broken.

Oil in the intercooler piping looks normal to me, especially on a 20+ year old car with some miles. Folks love the silicone hoses so I would hold on to them.

Agree with sventastic on taking a look at that distributor - maybe there's a seal behind there that is leaking or one of the cam seals. These are all a lot easier to address than a RMS.

I'm for sure going to be doing a complete stage 0, on this, and when I tackle the distributor I'll be checking the seal as well. Looks easy enough to replace.

Congrats on the new R! You have got a good list going along w/ some great suggestions. I would look into flushing the oil - using a conditioner/cleaner to help it get rid of any sludge that may be present. You most likely don't know what kind of oil and at what frequency it was changed from the PO. You don't want to change straight to synthetic if regular oil has been used. Dropping the pan and cleaning it out, swapping the seals will help and you probably won't have to do that again once you've done it right.

So cleaning the engine up (inside & out) will go a long way to getting rid of that lifter tick. Make sure you aren't burning any oil too. Then you can start using the synthetic oil.

On another note, your exhaust may be straight piped - thus the strong odor and loudness. You probably should do some type of hybrid over going completely stock, as the stock downpipe sucks. You'll likely need a catalytic converter and a resonator added.

My plan is to do a few changes of Castrol GTX High Mileage 10W-30 half-synthetic, but I have no idea what cleanser to run through it. Some people have said diesel oil, but I'm open to more suggestions. After that the seals are getting done for sure.

The exhaust may be straight pipped... but it more sounds like there is a large hole somewhere and I'm getting a code for an O2 sensor. I believe I have a straight flange, and I've been thinking about the stainless steel system that Swedish Car Parts in illinois sells since I believe it has a cat included in it, and I don't have a lift to install a new exhaust whereas they do

The Swedish word for lightning is "blixt," though I'm guessing you know that and went for "brixt" anyway in order to incorporate a delicious brick pun? Very nice.

Anyway, if you like the ring to it, you could add an –en suffix (a Swedish equivalent of the English article "The") to give it proper noun treatment: Blixten (or Brixten).

Congrats on the sweet new project!!

Damnit I knew I was getting some letter wrong. In my defense it's exams week at my school and I'm pretty burnt out brain wise :P. Changing it's name to Blixt! Don't think I can change the thread's name.

Better flow characteristics with the angle flange. Even better if you can find a 7 CM over a 6 CM angle flange. Here's a good picture highlighting the differences from good, very good, even better, best.

Would I have to change turbos out to do this or just the flange and exhaust?

Turbo stays the same. Your downpipe would need to change with the flange. The flange goes in between the turbo and exhaust downpipe.

Okay. Any advice on exhaust system? I was thinking of going with an iPD but I know a lot of people have negative opinions on them...

I think it boils down to your personal preference. Quality wise, IPD would be a better choice over OBX, but either of those still may not be to your liking for sound. You may want it even quieter, I'm not sure if that's the case with you though. Mototec Touring Edition seems to have a quieter sound closer to stock, but with better flow than stock.

You'll have to start looking up clips on YouTube to see what you like.

The IPD downpipe is great but the exhaust is loud.

Do you have to pass emissions? If not just grab a OBX downpipe and attach to a catback of your choice. Or even get a stock angle flange DP and it will flow way better.

I don't mind loud, but if it has the partial blessing I may go with iPD. However I have heard that TME is a good choice as well.

My T-5R came with a TME. Sounds great at WOT. Drones pretty bad a 55-60 though. Get something else if you ever plan on taking a road trip.

Okay my thoughts are to find a angle flange housing and get an iPD angle flange sport exhaust. How hard is it to convert from angle flange and are the angle flanges still available for 15Gs? I would like to not have to change my turbo if it's a good one for now.

You can use an angle flange housing on a 15g. 100% chance your turbo needs to be rebuilt.

I'm going to agree with those chances, do you know how expensive and how hard it is to rebuild a turbo?

$400 to have someone else do it or $45 and cleaning yourself plus balancing. Or just put a 16t on it and enjoy.

So where could I find a good rebuild kit with quality parts? I’ve heard of people buying eBay kits but I don’t want to risk it being the wrong stuff...

This is exactly what I did with mine. Bought a used 16T that was in good shape since my 15G was toast, blowing smoke everywhere. The 16T came with a straight flange, so we removed it and put on the conical flange to reattach it to my stock downpipe. Now I can either rebuild the 15G, upgrade it or sell it for cheap to a rebuilder, and I have a straight flange to use when it comes time for the exhaust system to be upgraded.

If you are looking to rebuild it yourself check out this site: http://www.ardideas.com/Turbocharger...ets_c_579.html

Does anyone have an R ECU or a cover for the top of the air filter? I’m not happy with this K&N cone filter and I’d like to go back to stock. I just don’t have access to a turbo air box....

I can build you a nice billet 16t if you would like. 11 blade billet wheel with a 9 blade turbine wheel with all the internal upgrades. Or I have a 16t I pulled off of a car I could get rid of

Is the 16T you pulled of a car angle flange or straight? Also wouldn't I need a tune to take advantage of it? And injectors? I don't want to get too far ahead of myself before I get it to stage 0.

If you can, take some pic of your exhaust and post em up - starting at your downpipe at the turbo. We can tell you what you currently have just by looking at them. If you have an exhaust that's loud, perhaps you already have an aftermarket downpipe. We can also see what kind of flange you have too. If you have a stock exhaust and stock tune, you won't need to get your car tuned if swap your 15G to a 16T. They're pretty much the same. If you change your injectors to larger ones (like the green ones) you'll need a tune to compensate for that change.

Finally done with exams, and got a picture of the exhaust. Also recieved some essentials from iPD, a new key and a tailgate rebuild kit.
