Why not a continental belt? Do they break easier? What should I get, a gates belt?

Yeah there aren't really any cosmetically nice 850Rs for sale anymore in America. I haven't seen a nice red estate for sale here since I bought mine.
I think mine is pretty nice, and you might see that for sale in the not-too-distant future. It is a red 1996 850 R which has been my daily car since July of that year.

Continental belts seem to be highly suspect for counterfeiting. Doesnt make sense to me but I was shown by a conti rep the differences. Just use a volvo belt or get a gates.

      Sounds good.

So a small development, she's road legal and insured!! I took her out for the first drive this year and she pulls on the highway! I didn't do anything too crazy because I don't know what the timing belt + components are like age-wise.

Determined it's the passengers side tie rod end that needs to be changed, we'll see if that and an alignment will fix the pull when driving / braking.

      Blixt Continues! - 1996 850 R Restoration

I thought that the old thread was long enough, so I decided to start this new one with some small updates:

Finally got around to installing the V70 taillights I scored a while back, and man they look great!

Cosmetic odds and ends, update by CYB3RBYTE, on Flickr

Also got around to addressing that tie rod end, or I tried to... the lower bolt and inner bolt were stuck on (and I mean stuck, my body weight couldn't even move them) and I didn't have access to a torch or other proper tools. So I let the professionals have at it, and they got it done quickly. However, one of the rear toe adjustment bolts was stuck and had to be drilled out so they had to add another two hours of labor before the alignment, . This is why if I can do things I prefer it, but I was gonna run into that issue regardless when taking it to be aligned.

I'm gonna pick her up tonight and see if she tracks straight! I'm really excited.

Been thinking of saving for that Jetex exhaust system but I would need a catalytic converter, anyone have one that's cheap and not too terrible? The smell of my current exhaust is not the greatest, lol.

Did you install the replacement front lip yet? The old one would bother the heck out of me. I would even rattle-can it temporarily just to install it ASAP!

It's a cat back system. Is your factory downpipe intact?

This one has the correct name of the car though!

To my limited knowledge, the downpipe is not intact. The Catalytic converter has been cut out and just replaced by a metal tube.

So when I picked up the car today, one of the wheels is sitting damn near outside of the wheel well lip, and the other is within it. They also didn't set the wheel straight, smh. Guess I'll have to pay them another visit.

This is what you want. 850 BTCC alignment specs. 0.15 toe is ideal, stock is 0.17 and some radical cars are 0.13. Ask jared how too little toe behaves.

Will that require angle flange or straight flange?

Me thinks I have a grounding issue for the passenger side tail-light. Both bulbs are brand new, correct wattage, etc. What could be causing this besides some weird ground issue?

The upper tail lights are on the same circuit both sides so I'd expect a problem like that to be even. And not even between top and bottom since those are different circuits. My bet would be bad connections in the housing.

Okay, I'll start looking for different housings. The white trim piece is removable correct?

Just curious, what is the life expectancy of the steering rack on these cars? And what's a good replacement brand?

For the moment, I don't have extra funds for the car, so I'm trying to work that only costs me time. I thought I'd take a swing at the climate control issues. The ECC has several codes, most having to do with temperature sensors, vent motors, or the blower itself. After blowing out the temperature sensors, both of which now spin, it was time to see what motors were causing a conniption.

I discovered it was the passenger side vent motor (the easy one) and the recirculation motor. I removed both after some finagling and tight tool space constraints. After a cleaning of the insides, the were both working again! Victory!

NOT. The sleeve is cracked for the passenger side motor shaft, luckily I have the broken off piece. I'm thinking super glue, but maybe a better way to repair it like epoxy?

If you have the piece, find a thin tube (metal, or plastic) with a small, or slightly larger ID as the OD of the sleeve. Make it long enough to cover to the base of the sleeve.

Epoxy it all together, with the tube acting as an external support. The square nub pulls out of the actuator, and you can use that as an internal support until the epoxy dries. Put a thin layer of grease or Vaseline on it to avoid it getting stuck to any epoxy/glue on the inside.

Once it's all dry, make sure the vent flap will move by hand, then reinstall your actuator.

Since the flap wants to rest in the "closed", you either need to make sure that the controls on the EEC are in that position BEFORE you turn the car on, or you need to put the flap back in whatever open-ish position it was when you pulled the actuator. If you don't, the actuator will try to put the flap at whatever position is called for by the ECC module, which can cause problems.

You are able to do a recalibration of all of the damper doors through the OBD2 port with one of the DIY flash readers, but it also involves driving the car around over 20mph for a short bit, and letting them relearn. I don't have the procedure link handy here at work, but the manual is pretty easy to find online.

What is the open position for the passenger side vents? I believe it was already closed when I pulled the actuator.

What was the setting on the ECC module? It will default closed, if that shaft is broken, regardless of the command for it.

Due to the square nature of the drive shaft on the actuator, you'll probably only have one way to install it anyway and have the mounting screws line up.

It was set to the floor only, function knob facing down towards the floors. Would it be open or closed in that state?

When I pulled the actuator, the vent was in the closed position and everything lined up screw wise.

Woke up early yesterday and started the day off right with some interior work. I pulled both interior temperature sensors and re-soldered them together.

Continued by applying epoxy to the actuator motor shaft, and reassembled everything. When I tried to get the dampers to re-adjust, they did nothing. Maybe I didn't enter the test mode correctly, I don't know. Regardless, I'm still getting a code for the passenger side actuator and the ventilation damper, but nothing else so far luckily.

Thought I'd try to see if the A/C system is serviceable, nope. I tried to poke the compressor clutch with a broomstick, and it did nothing. This climate control system is killing me, I know house HVAC can be difficult but holy crap auto HVAC is even worse. Almost makes me want to convert it to MCC when I inevitably take the dash out.

Last thoughts for the day, can someone help me tell if I have nivomat shocks or not? My rear passenger side is sagging a little bit.

Welp. There's another $300. Maybe a conversion to standard shocks is due?

One of my 850Rs is converted to Bilstein HDs with IPD springs... the other one is in progress of being converted to Koni STR.T with Vogtland springs. Jared has a formula involving Bilstein Touring rear shocks and Sachs struts up front that is interesting! I had already bought my Konis before I learned of it.

When you go from Nivomat to standard rear shocks, you’ll need rear springs too!

What exact rear springs, and afterwards how do I convert to them (Bilstein touring)? I heard there is a conversion process for nivomats specifically.
