      Glove box cooling

Anyone know what option / configuration the glove box cooling function comes with? My fully loaded R-Design does not have the cooling button inside of the glove box, so I am kind of curious.

From my understanding that feature never made it to the US...yet. I have only seen it in the European models.

Gotcha, FWIW, the manual doesn't indicate that this is a EU only option.

Im completely with you on this one. For some reason, this was one of those odd features I was actually looking forward to. There was talk about it somewhere on one of these threads. If I run accress it, I will post it up.

I have the info, asked about that earlier:

Thank you for your email. I apologize for my delay as I was looking into your previous email further in regards to what was shown for you in the XC40 standard features. It was confirmed that the cooled glove box is not available in our XC40 vehicles. The cooled glove box is only available in vehicles with the 4-Zone Climate Control System. I have forwarded this to be corrected on the Care by Volvo app.

There's a long discussion about this in one of the other XC40 threads.

My summary: At least a few early US journalist R-Design demos came with glovebox cooling. It can be seen in some review videos. At least one of those wound up at a dealership, and in an online video review. Various Volvo printings refer to the cooled glovebox feature, generically. That confused the issue.

But it is now clear that glovebox cooling is not included in any XC40 trim or package currently offered in the US (Inscription owners speak up if I'm wrong). The cooled glovebox clearly is included in some XC40 trims, in some markets. XC40 offers no "4-zone climate control" option anywhere (the closest is heated rear seats, in some markets) But the cooled glovebox is offered in the XC40 in some trims in some markets. Therefore, the CbV response that antair received and quoted is misleading. To be clear, that is not a criticism of antair but of whoever gave antair that answer.

We saw the cooled glove box in either the XC60 or XC90 we test drove before the XC40 had reached the dealer. I couldn't quite understand its purpose or function. My hubby said, "that's where I can stash my candy bars." But the next question was, what happens to the candy bars when you turn off the car? So I'm curious... what do (or would) people actually use the cooled glove box for?

Keep a bottle of water (or candy, in your husband's case ) cool. You can leave the car for a couple of hours and it will still stay cool.

My 2007 VW GLI has a cooled glove box. I've owned the car for over 11 years and never used that function. The glovebox barely fits the owners manual and other documents I keep in the car so there is enough room for a couple protein bars and that's it.

When we go on road trips I just bring a small cooler.

I have used it a couple of times on long road trips. No need to have a full on ice chest in front seat. Keeping a sandwich cool for later. It may be convenient to pick up a sandwich or candy bar at a gas stop but still too early to eat? I would not use it for ice cream.

I was looking at my Rdesign spec sheet for my Care By Volvo order from January and I was surprised that it said "2 zone climate control with cooled glovebox". I am not expecting it when I get delivery but obviously there was an expectation at that time the cooled glovebox would be a feature in the US.

Mine doesn’t have the little snowflake ‘switch’ but the pictures are what is there where it would be. It looks like it is already possibly set up for it just missing the ‘switch’?

      Locks the glove box.

Idea is if you have valuables in the car you don't want accessible when you have to have someone else in/driving your car (Valet, lend it to a friend, etc), you can use that key, lock the glove box, and then take it with you.

Since you probably don't often need to do that, you need not carry it around with you, just store it there when not in use.

Oh. I thought the lock worked through a Sensus menu screen (Private Locking). Essentially it disables the unlatching button just to the left of the glove box.

It's possible, but hard to tell. If you look at my pictures, it looks like the piece would be attached to the round tube that has a cap to divert the air and flow, then screw in towards the back. The descriptions make it seem right though.

Just take off this cover and use small pipe to direct cool air to the glove box
This small switch is just opening and closing this pipe.

I just picked up a 2019 T6 Inscription and just noticed that snowflake pull in the glovebox. I am in the US (Los Angeles). Not sure if it works or just some leftover item. Haven't gotten that far in the manual yet. Curious though.

My T5 R-Design has it. Just pull the lever towards you to cool the glove box; push it back in to turn it off. It only works when you have the a/c running.

Just picked up my XC40 in Sweden (Canadian oversees order) and it had it - Momentum W/ Momentum Plus, Comfort, and Covenience package. After these posts I wasn’t expecting to see it - pleasant surprise!

Took delivery of a CrysWhtMet XC40 T5 R-D AWD yesterday. It came WITH a functioning cooled glove box. The sales team at my dealership were blown away by the anomaly. The dealership's wholesale order date for this specific car was 4/12/18. The car was surprisingly still unspoken for at the time and I ended up placing a deposit for it on 5/29/18. When I was in the process of modifying the build to my specifications, an oddity I found was that the dealership's configuration already had the FOUR-C Active Chassis I wanted. Strange because this was not yet officially offered on the build site by 4/12/18 (although already on the physical brochure). My guess was this car was intended to be a fully loaded "tester" for the dealership, because the only 2 modifications needed to get it to what I wanted was to remove the heated steering/seat pkg and remove the retina burning lava trim. That, or plain old luck of the draw. Nice to know it's there if I end up needing the function. Hope there will be many others that receive this surprise bonus with their orders!

Has anyone had any luck retrofitting the cooled glove box, as described in this thread?

I have used it a few of times on + 1000 mile round trips. It does a decent job at keeping sandwiches or whatever cool. It is not a frig or freezer.

The biggest practical issue is that I usually need to clean out a few things to make room since space is otherwise limited elsewhere or I have too much stuff.

I have a Momentum and have used it. the problem is that the glovebox isnt big enough so it really limits what you can put in there. As for retrofitting, i think its possible because it seems like everything is pre-wired to just be a plug and play type of arrangement. For example I dont have foglights in my momentum but the foglight button on my stalk works, it even lights up on the dash saying that the fogs are on when i press it. its just that my car physically does not have the fog lights, but the wiring is already there if i ever wanted to retrofit them.

Mine doesn't have them either. I would love to put them in though but so far have not seen a retro fit kit. - Kris
