Both amazing pictures. Thank you so much, looks like a great option for us wanting to preserve the look of the vehicle while having the ability to tow.

FWIW, i called the local Volvo dealership, and it looks like it's somewhere between $1500-1600 installed (will get a written quote tomorrow). What pricing are others in the US seeing?

Thatís pretty good all things considered. If you call Volvo Customer Care you should be able to easily get a 30% off coupon for OEM accessories that will give you $200 back as a mail in rebate.

I ordered all my parts offline from OEMvehicleparts.com. I paid $1000 shipped for all needed parts.
I had my trusted local body shop install everything for about $300.
Then my local Volvo dealership did the programming for $115.

I mailed in the form for the 30% / $200 mail-in-rebate and within 2 weeks received my check!

So all in in all I paid about $1200 but I had to do much more leg work to save that extra cash. In the end it might be worth having your dealer do it all for that price. I didnít trust my dealer with install which is the reason I took it elsewhere and ordered the parts myself.

Now that I have it all set up and working I really love it. I havenít used it yet however. If anything itís cool to show people the hitch and wow them with a neat feature of the car.

      Hope that helps

I have applied Jin-A-Loo Graphite Extreme Lubricant on 1) the Ball and the hole 2) receiver inside and out. Applied WD-40ģ Specialistô Dry Lube PTFE Spray on the other parts bottom up to the parts exposed to outside.

My local dealer is quoting $1400 for parts and $750 for install. And I remember people are saying this foldable tow bar is flawed in design as it probably does not offer the same protection like the part it replaced meaning we are still missing part of the metal on the outer portion of the tow bar itself.

Do you guys know more about that?

Very helpful. I got the parts for ~$1000 without calling any dealership, and just using Courtesy Volvo of Scottsdale's online website for parts. I'll call and see if I can get that coupon/rebate. Did yours come with instructions for installation? If so - I'll just do the install myself and have the Volvo dealership do the programming. That'd be my preference. If not, I'll take it to them and they'll install it for a few hundred, so I'll still end up saving $300 or so off their quote.

Instructions can be found here and are very thorough:

      https://accessories.volvocars.com/In...XC90(16-)/2018

Also you will need a Service Journal for the template for the cutout in bumper valence. I have it in my email. When you are ready to do install send me a private message and I can forward you the template so you can print it out and use it.

Copy that, will PM shortly - parts should be here next week. Managed to score the 30%/$200 coupon you mentioned too, you just saved me a lot of money. Thank you for everything!

With the US version of the hitch, does the auto pilot get disabled when a bike rack is connected?

I have the OEM foldable hitch on my month old xc90. So it’s definitely available in the US. They put a button in the rear and I press it and it pops out. When I’m not using it then it ticks under bumper.

Can you measure distance from end of hitch to pin hole center ? (Thule platforms require 1.5"..) as per https://cdn1.static-tgdp.com/assetlo...arket=US&att=1

This looks very interesting and so much better than the previous version! Anyway, I have a Saris superclamp Ex 4 that requires 2in. I'm wondering what the distance between end of hitch to pin hole center also

I also had this hitch added to my car but the dealer put a large cut into the bumper that I do not believe needs to be there. Is the cut on yours visible from the back (not just underneath)? It looks worse than the old cut as it is VERY long and there is no cover.

Steps 88-91 show how large the cut should be, but it should be on the underside of the bumper cover.

I believe you have upgraded body-kit installed. The official document shows that it doesn't fit to some body-kit and that could be the reason (see below). Mine is standard and only cut underneath - invisible from backside.

      Note!
Foldable towbar hitch cannot be combined with:

Exterior styling kit 1 Urban Luxury with side scuff plate

      or

Exterior styling kit 2 Urban Luxury with running board

      or

Exterior styling package 3 Rugged Luxury with side scuff plate

      or

Exterior styling package 4 Rugged Luxury with running board

The part description on the Volvo page for it says 2Ē clearance inside but I imagine that varies depending on accessory and position of the retaining pin hole.

      Wait.... now I am confused...

it says max ball pressure is 500lb. What is the bicycle holder?

      here is the bicycle holder:

      https://accessories.volvocars.com/en...ngine)/all/all

So max ball pressure is 500lb, same as non-foldable version, but why this is not compatible with foldable version?

Maybe this is something related to this: "depth of the square profile is limited to 2,5 inches"? Non foldable version is deeper?
This is probably more an issue on angular momentum/pivot point. Having a mass hanging 4 feet out or more (like if youíre using the Thule T2 XT Pro with extension to carry a total of 4 bikes) youíll have quite a bit of mass putting downward angular pressure far from the fulcrum (pivot/hinge) of the foldable hitch. This is most likely putting the limit on how much you free hang vs. a trailer which will have a tongue weight pressing down within inches of the fulcrum, not feet - think the pivot for the trailer is over itís axle and the tongue is pushing directly down on the ball. Thatís where the 500lbs rating comes into play with a margin of safety raising it further (unpublished though).

I think this is incorrect. Tounge weight is tongue weight. If it's rated for 500 lbs, then it's good for 500 lbs. It's the bike rack (part number 8640533) which is only rated for 130 lbs.

I got the hitch installed on my 2017 R and am using a dirt bike hitch hauler which weights more than 200 lbs. Very solid. Works great. Here's a picture:

Just out of curiosity. Have you run a quick security check for what will happened in a collision?

      Foldable towbar

Just posted this video I made in an other thread.

If someone were to slam into the back, the bike and bike rack would act as a 2nd bumper and help dissipate the impact. It's amazing how well the xc90 drives with bike on the back. Pretty much hardly know it's there as the 4-corner suspension levels the ride. Also, the auto pilot works just the same.

The only thing is the backup alarms go off in reverse. Anyone have the same problem with a bike or luggage rack? I think one of these will trick the car into thinking it is towing something and disable it.

What if YOU bump into someone?
      Have you calculated the ballistics?
I can imagine the 10 metric ton motorbike fly into the air....

When you connect the power cord to the car the CAR recognize the trailer. If I remember correctly you can tweak this in Sensus.

It could get ugly for sure. Hauling anything with a trailer hitch adds another element of danger in an accident.

I absolutely do not have an upgraded body kit of any kind. It looks to me that they installed this thing so that it would raise and lower with the ball attached, which is likely NOT how it is supposed to be raised and lowered. I'm about to return to the dealer for my yearly maintenance and am going to have some words.
