      00 S70 attempt to save

Picked this up last night....2000 S70 GLT SE, 120K. $280. bucks. 3 owners

The Good: 2nd owner recorded everything in a journal. Even every time they filled with gas. They replaced ETM, ABS module, Heater core, timing belt at 105K. Leather good condition, not a spec of rust, couple small dents and minimal clear coat fading on front bumper.

The BAD: 3rd owner must have neglected it for the 10K miles they owned it. Failed the glove test, engine is knocking hard and running rough.Seems to be in limp mode but no shift warning on dash. DISA says misfire cylinder 5. Gonna pull a coil and plug from the other S70 and swap out on cylinder # 5 and see if that helps. Then pull the oil pan and see if the rod bearing is shot. Its slapping very loud. If i have to pull the engine im game, ive never worked on an engine before and for 280. bucks this car is worth trying to save in my opinion. Im just surprised with only 120K the engine might be shot. I thought the lower ends on these S70's were pretty stout. Will update my saga....

Nice winter project. The body and interior look super clean. Perfect swap candidate.

      Solid.

Might as well just buy a t5 engine and do everything with the engine out. It'll be cheaper, stronger and last longer not to mention a million years faster and quite a bit easier.

Look forward to seeing your progress. If you're stuck or looking for some step by step stuff the build threads for my 99/00 wagons and 00 glt se cover most of the basics of everything including engine replacement

Swapped coil and plug on cylinder #5 and no love. Picture tells the story, someone was in there before because you dont use RTV to seal the oil pan. I cant believe this engine still ran with rod completely broken. SB im probably gonna do the T5 swap (from my sons 01 S60 T5 LOL). If i source a 2.3 will i need a new ECU ?

You will need tuning in the future but it'll run and drive.

Nice find, Will call them tomorrow, I might head to NM next friday to snag it. 450.00 great price. Will it fit in the trunk of a 01 BMW 325i wagon ? I cant drive the work truck outside of work hours. I will inquire about the turbo cost as well

It should fit. You'll want cardboard and garbage bags to protect your interior. Wouldnt bother with the turbo just build a new one from used housings and a new chra.

I called them and unfortunately that engine is sold. Any other sources besides ebay ? SB i tried, clicking on you signature for the T5 swap on the XC but no link attached. Do you have a separate link you can attach. I want to start reading up on the swap procedure while sourcing the engine. My car is automatic, can i use a engine from a manual car if i find one ? Just checked the paint code and its moon dust. Unique color and depth to the paint.

      car-part.com

search by region, engine type b5234t9.

The only thng you'll need to do to put a manual engine in an auto car is use the flex plate from the auto car in place of the flywheel off the manual. The XC doesnt have a dedicated build thread but my 99 pewter has a lot of information in its thread about the engine swap. Pretty much just label, bag and tag everything and take pics. Also have a good workspace to lay things out.

I read your entire thread on the pewter (incredible work BTW) and now i'm thinking maybe i should just source the same engine after all you went through. I have skills but not mad skills like yourself. A lot of what i read make sense but some of it is still new to me never having swapped an engine before. And i don't want to inundate this thread with tons of questions through the process. Everyone here has been extremely courteous and helpful but i understand people have lives also. I'm a Chicago transplant living in Utah and haven't met any Volvo lovers yet. I have somewhat of time to get this done but we have 4 drivers and 3 cars in the family. Because of my work schedule i end up getting landlocked without a car so i don't want to stretch this out too long either. If i do go T5 what are the years would be the easiest to swap ?

Direct plug and play any 2000-01 engine. After that you start having to mix and match things. I think I covered the oil lines and coolant pipe debocle with the pewters new engine.

10-4. Didn't realize the 2000 2.4 GLT was only 190HP. My sons 00 S70 GLT seems faster than that. Gotta go 2.3 for 50 extra HP. It would be silly not to.

HP is not the whiteblocks forte. Torque is. The 2.4 makes T5 torque 600 rpm sooner and thats really all tuning and the 0.5 compression ratio bump. My old 00 GLT certainly hauls.

Got the engine pulled and it was a lot easier than i thought. Was able to leave the tranny in the car and just pull the fan. Thinking this was a JY motor because volvo would not paint pen #'s on the flex plate. Numerous bolts were hand tight and wiring harness brackets not in the right place, total hack job. I may have sourced a low mile T5 engine. Need to verify the miles before purchase. Having fun with this.

The T5 engine should be here next week, it an 01' with 53K. Went to JY today and pulled a T-16. Cleaned it up and everything seems tight, no shaft play at all. Thinking i might install it rather than buy a new CHRA. Or should i just buy a new CHRA ? Turbo is a pain to pull with engine installed but i can use 150.00 better elsewhere on this S70 save.

      16t?

You may have to change coolant hard lines to make the 01 version work. May not.

Yeah 16T, Saturday night and a couple beers equals T-16 ha ! I was wondering about the lines as well while driving home from the JY. I was distracted while pulling the turbo because a guy was pulling the Tethys from the S60 at the same time and coordinating me wrenching from on top and underneath so the car didnt fall on me while he raged on the lug nuts. It was quite comical but he got them off after busting 2 sockets and borrowing my 19mm

Got some parts from FCP and IPD for the S70

      TCV hoses
      Fuel filter
copper flange lock nuts for turbo
      manifold to tubo studs
      Plate frames
PCV kit (they forgot the trap box)
      Timing belt kit
      Intake manifold gasket
      Couple oil filters
      Air filter
      Cabin filter
      Oil drain plug washers
3 Check valve banjo bolts (for all three Volvos)
      Oil filler cap gasket
      Exhaust manifold gasket set
      Bumper grill insert

The T5 engine should be arriving from Colorado this week. I'll be out of town this weekend so wont be able to get started till the weekend after.
Chime in if you think i may have missed something for this 2.4 T-12 to 2.3 T-16 swap.
I didn't buy a water pump because the engine only has 53K on it.

You'll need a few more gaskets and one substitute

      Turbo to DP:

      8642449

      Manifold to Turbo:

      8642450

      Intake Manifold to ETM:

      31430474

THE LIFESAVER aka RNC single piece 3 layer exhaust gasket: (trim lightly to fit head its obvious)

      8699467

I would buy a new water pump and do a very good job of prepping the mounting surface on the block. It will never be easier than with the engine out of the car.

You will also need to convert the thermostat housing back to p80 style using the housing and cover from the S70.

      T stat housing gasket:

9463274 get oem volvo for this its a pain. T40 torx hold it on.

Water pump gasket (also get oem volvo for this):

      30677767

Good time to upgrade to the 2005+ power steering reservoir. You'd be best off finding used but you need the suction hose to the pump as well its different. return hose can be bent around the timing cover and works fine.

Flex plate bolts are torque to yield they need to be replaced:

      979671

T50 driver head. Best access is through the starter hole as you may have already figured out.

      2 non engine related suggestions:

Do the front and rear hydraulic motor mounts with the engine out. so easy. Also the heater core junction is an age related failure and really sucks to do with the turbo in the way, no engine in the car its 5 minutes.

      Will purchase all the above.
As far as heater core junction, do you mean just the hoses and clips going into the fire wall ? PO notes state "Heater Core repaired"
What brand do you recommend for motor mounts ? Stay away from Hutchins ?
Curious whey i need the t-stat housing and cover from the P80 to the P2 engine ?
I can source a 05' PS resevoir from the JY. As long as it dosent make the S70 steer like my S60 T5. That damn steering has tooooo much power assist and i feel like im steering a 1987 cadillac that you can spin the whole wheel at park with just a pinky finger. The S70 is much better.

Appreciate all the great advice !

      This:

      https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/vol...50-c70-s70-v70

Hutchinson/Corteco are oem blue box parts theyre what you want to use

you need the t stat housing because the p2 one will be a different shape, point in a different direction and have a different engine coolant temperature sensor.

Resevoir doesnt change steering feel. I think you may have a stiff column coupler since p80 steering should be very light when everything is working properly but not numb since its a relatively low assisted rack.

My T5 finally arrived. Seller claims it only had 53K when it was wrecked. I kinda believe him because ETM is still white sticker. The T-belt and water pump were replaced ???
Maybe due to age of car and not mileage. Engine is very clean and not a speck of oil around the coils. But there is some white crusty stuff around the coils but not where the head bolts to the block. Hope its just road salt and not coolant. Engine came from Denver. SB i ordered all those additional parts you suggested including motor mounts.
I dont think i will do a detailed documentation of the swap. But once complete i will start a new thread summary of what was not plug and play swapping from a 2000 2.4 turbo to a 2001 2.3 turbo to help anyone in the future. My first engine swap, here we go !

You probably won't have too many issues with the 01 block into the 00 hopefully.

I cross referenced parts on IPD and FCP and it appears i can keep the PS pump and AC compressor from the 2.3 motor rather than the old ones from the 2.4 The parts on the 2.3 have 53k on them and the parts on the 2.4 have ????? JY motor so who knows. Im seeing multiple options on the alternator. The S70 2.4 had a 120 amp and the S60 2.3 has a 140 amp. Will i fry things if i use the 140 amp ? And it also says it must be "with freewheel" ? Both pulleys seem to have a little play in them while spinning almost like a fan clutch. Is that what they mean by freewheel ?

Yes. Keep all the new accessories unless radically different visually. You will want to strip the PS system from the new block and keep the old one intact from the 00.

I think i screwed up. Got the engine bolted up to the tranny. Attempting to install the flex plate bolts through the access where the starter would be. I can turn the flex plate via the crank pully. But now i need to turn the transmission to line up to the holes on the flex plate. I pushed the shift override to put the transmission into drive. When i turn the drivers wheel the transmission does not move. Is there any way i can turn the transmission ? Im hoping its not electronically engaged because i dont want to connect the battery with all the sensors unplugged and fluids not replaced yet. I really dont want to drop the oil pan for better access to the flex plate bolts.

Did you replace the oil pickup seals yet? If not I would drop the pan anyway.

      If I remember
You can stick a big screwdriver/ tire iron in there and rotate the converter by pushing on the converter
      It will move/rotate
As you have to rotate it anyways when installing the other flex plate bolts
It will prob only move half inch at a time
