Dual Zone AC vs 4 Zone AC Question

Currently have a XC40, and the rear AC is horrible. I have to close the front vents in order for the rear to get enough air power. (Hot weather my 4 legged friend struggles)

Anyone know much of the differences between the Dual and 4 zone? Thinking about getting the XC60 T8 Inscription or Polestar, but want to know the differences in the AC as the Polestar only has a dual zone.

What model year is your XC40? I just bought a 2020, and the rear AC seems good. Iíll have to admit it is the first vehicle Iíve ever had with AC in the back so I donít have much to compare it to. But my golden retriever seems happier.

The AC on a T8 is only dual zone but since itís all electric itís damn fast to cool down.

My wife sits in the rear seats with our little one and I always ask her if the climate is from the B Pillar vents. No complaints.

Thank you, that is very helpful. Also I didnít know that the T8ís were only dual zone. Makes the decision to switch from XC40 to XC60 a little more challenging.

Driving a T8 in power mode will easily persuade you.

My 2017 XC90 T8 has four zone (front seats and rear seats) plus vents for the third row. I specifically looked for vents in the rear compartment for our Son (Frankie) While the air movement is not great, at least we can turn on that vent. We never use the third row seats. Need all that space for him. He is very demanding with respect to accommodations. So of course we try our best......

Frankie is a handsome fellow! Great Pyrenees?

Iím wondering about the terminology of two zone versus four zone. My new XC 40 has two air-conditioning vents in the rear seat area so is that considered two zones front and rear? Or four zones, passenger and driver front and rear? There are no vents to my knowledge in the cargo area.

I recall seeing a review that suggested that most systems with multiple air conditioning controls do NOT control the temperature as well as one would think. I have a car thermometer and will check out how different the air temperature can be adjusted and report back.

The point isn't to create a "bubble" of a certain temperature, but rather to give each occupant the ability to be comfortable. To that end, it works well.
The auto thermometer is meant to be installed with the sensor inside the vent. So yes you can measure the output from the vent which will give you a better understanding of how well the temperature is controlled. These are used specifically for air conditioning and as such are reasonably accurate.

If you set the front for 70 degrees and the rear for 60 degrees, I would expect to see the front somewhere in the 70 +- 5 degrees and the rear 60 +- 5 degrees. There is a interior temperature sensor that is adjacent to the Volume control and Glove Box opener. Using a thermometer is how mechanics test air conditioning systems (without the benefit of software). When you turn them on max, you can expect close to 40 degrees at the outlet generally.
