      Manual Swapping a XC70 - Axles Q and A

So been getting a bunch of DM regarding axles and such.

So to give you a short back-round on me if your new here ....

This was Manual swap FWD M56 back in 2008/2009
      10540957_1471873573052253_7839679922484594625_n_1471873573052253.jpg

      So axle Q and A.

Q: For M66 AWD Swaps what axles do you need ?

A: You need the stock axles from your XC and either Axles from a 98 V70 AWD ( XC or R ) or from a 04R+ that your M66 Came from.
Now you will need to combine these since the XC your manual swapping has longer control arms ( 2" Longer ) then your P2R

FWD / R LCA Left - XC LCA Right

So now you have two types of axles ends. The Smooth ones which are normally 01+ IIRC and the odd shaped ones which seems to be 00 and older ( not 100% on this so someone correct me if I am wrong )

Both of these are from a Manual FWD Volvo, Id assume 98 V70 M56 and 01 S60T5M ( Since those are cars I parted out at this time )
You dont want any of these here since these are FWD and pretty usless to you.

What you want is this ...

This is from a 2001 V70XC Auto , the part you want to throw away.

What you see is here is the different ends on FWD Auto VS Manual Axle ends.

This should help show you what you need to do.
Also shows you the difference between XC and NON XC axles on P2
Also why you can use your P2R axles most of the time due to the differences in center joins.

Now remember you need to do this to both axles, granted the driver side you can use any auto axleend from 98 and older.
Or from any Manual FWD car also of any year. 92-08

This is exaclty what your AWD M66 XC axle should look like when finished.
XC Axle combined with a 98 AWD axle.

I'm actually collecting some parts to M66W my P2 V70 (FWD) but this information may be of use:

P2 Drivers M56, M66 FWD and M66 AWD axles are all the same (8252034)
P2 Passenger M56 and M66 FWD axles are the same (8252049)

P80 AW50-42LE to M56/M66 swaps can use the auto axles as long as you use the auto output seals(different I.D.)

What I'm trying to figure out is if that applies to the P2/AW50-50/51 as well.

Nope. Cant mix aw55 axle inners with manual boxes because of the spline and sealing surface difference.

      Correct.

I think 98 was the last year auto / manual axles worked in both.

Almost. Anything p80 4 speed auto and 5 speed manual can swap axles. All DS axles are interchangeable under that compatibility and all fwd passenger axles are as well, if you respect the year break.

      Basically:

1998 - Auto/Manual fwd fully interchangeable drivers & passenger. Auto/manual swappable awd drivers. Auto manual swappable aw42 awd and m58.

-98 and 99+ non cross compatible.

99-00 Auto/Manual fwd fully interchangeable drivers & passenger not including SE naturally aspirated 5 speed auto and R 5 speed auto. 00 c70 keeps the 4 speed auto as does glt and t5.

99+ m56 axles fit and work in all 99-00 aw42 fwd transmissions. Ive done this upgrade to my 99 t5a after blowing up a few too many aw42 axles. 99+ drivers manual axles works in 99-00 aw42 awd (99 R and 99-00 xc)

Yes the manual axles work in the p80 xc the 1" lift is within allowable angles just as lowering a p80 1.5" doesnt kill the axles.

      AWD specifics:

98, 99 & 00 aw42 awd use different angle gear thicknesses each year. 00 angle gear works in aw42 and aw55 awd cars. if your m58/m66 swapping your 00 R you use a aw42 passenger axle that matches your angle gear year.

Thank you for the response. I figured that was the case but I wanted to get a second opinion before I bought up a couple stock m58 passenger side axles.
