\r\n Does anyone have information of whether I can replace the entire rear axle assembly of a 1968 142 with the later 1971 -1975 assembly? I have a lead on a 1971 rear axle assembly. Also, bearing spacer/retainer part # 384229. Any idea where I can purchase 2 of these?\r\n

\r\n You need to be specific about what you mean by \'entire\'. I assume that you just want to bolt the complete axle onto the trailing arms, connect up the brake hoses & cable and connect the driveshaft? You may wish to check the details on the donor. If it is an E it will have a 4.27 final drive which will be a little noisy on the highway if you have an M40 transmission.
\r\n
\r\n384229 is for the early axle, not the 1971. Is that what you want? If so, CVI has them

\r\nThey have most of the other parts also. VP Auto also probably has them.\r\n

\r\n Thank you 142 guy for the info. During my initial searches, I kept seeing that the part KOYO C014 was also being used for the Volvo part #384229. The KOYO is thicker, and I was concerned that it might try to share space with the inner oil seal, but that is not the case. It must come close though. I had purchased a nice \'68 142 locally, and the right rear bearing was "bad", but perhaps only the adjusting nut was too far outward making the bearing ride on about half of the race, causing the retainer to "bounce" into its cutout in the axle housing. It was pretty chewed up almost 1/4" into the retainer\'s normal location. I can\'t think of another reason this could of happened, but it is all good now. I couldn\'t locate any metal shavings in the housing either before or aft the old oil seal. None was in the differential housing either. Before, it was so noisy driving it slowly home that I thought it might be the diff. I drove it noiselessly for the first time today.\r\n

\r\n Also keep in mind that the rear axel changed in Late \'74 as the 140\'s morphed into the 240.
\r\n
\r\nI have a \'73 142 and, some leftover parts from an late production \'74 rear axel, I can tell you that the trailing arms and torque rods are the same, but the Panhard Rod on the late chassis number \'74 rear axel is shorter and curved, similar but not the same, to that on my \'77 242.
\r\n
\r\nSo just keep in ming that you should probably delete Late \'74\'s and \'75\'s from your search. (On my \'77 240 the Brake hose location is slightly different as are the trailing arms and torque rods)
\r\n
\r\nI cannot tell you 100% that up to a \'73 or early production \'74 will work but, but should. Just use your original trailing arms as the Rear Spring mounting arrangement evolved over the years as well, but they are interchangable.
\r\n

\r\n
\r\nEDIT: Also, I just rebulit my \'73 142 rear axel and got all the bearing\'s and oil seals from Rock Auto. very good pricing. All Timiken and SKF parts, some at "closeout" pricing

\nThanks for the tech info. The axle I was going to buy was a wheel to wheel \'71 145 with all the fixings-' + '-including the panhard rod, spring mounts, springs (maybe), bolts nuts etc...I wanted the rear axle from the later model because it uses sealed bearings instead of those Timken rollers, but the only one I could find was with the higher ratio diff. After my attempt to buy, the man that has the cars (\'68 142 and \'71 145E) quit answering his phone, so no go. His craigs ad listed the rear axles, but also listed the complete cars at one time. Perhaps they are sold so no rear axles available, but the ad for the complete axles is still up. Hmmm...
\r\nAnyway, rockauto sent the wrong outer seals. They were for the later axle, so I returned them. The only Volvo originals I could find were a set of 2 on ebay. Rockauto has the bearings though, but not the bearing retainers. Finally, I gave up and fixed the \'68 bearings.\r\n
