      07 Inner CV Joint Disassembly

Got my left axle out, but can't get the inner tripod out of the carrier. I was under the impression that it just came out. But, maybe it needs a little more "encouragement"? VIDA appears to be sparse on the inner joint. Maybe you need to disassemble the outer joint to replace the boot on the inner joint? That would suck.

This is already disassembled and he's reassembling it, but you might be able to reverse engineer it haha, not sure if 07 axles are the same, but I'd imagine they would be

Unfortunately, his was NA 2.4. The turbo models have different CV joints.

      Thanks anyway!

The more I stare at VIDA, the more it looks like you need the remove the outer joint and leave the inner joint assembled. Of course, that should be done with a brass drift, which I don't have. Nor, does any place in town.

Anyone know of a way to get the inner joint apart?

Found a comment online that the inner tripod might be staked in. To remove it may require a little grinding to open things up so that the rollers will slide out. That could be good or bad in the long run.

You can see the staking on the carrier on either side of the roller in the picture. It forms a small lip at the end of the roller track so the tripod won't come out of the carrier.

this is how i usually get em out. Remove the boot clamp and give it a good tug to split it.

Then i drill a hole through the cup to fabricate a slide hammer. I was pretty commited by this point and just keep using bigger slide weight on the slide until it come out.

No, no. I got it out of the transmission. That was easy. I couldn't get the tripod joint out of the carrier.

Now to get the tripod joint off the axle shaft. The 3 prong puller doesn't grip the bottom enough. The tie rod puller presses on the rollers. Not sure that's a good thing.

Why not regrease it with the tripod still assembled and reboot it then so the outer end? Thatís how Volvo does it in house

That appears to be official way. That requires removing the outer boot. I have no outer boot clamps. So, if I mess up the clamps, which is likely, I'm SOL. Why the dealer didn't replace the inner boots along with the outer boots, since it's 90% there, baffles me. But, they seem to have taken a lot of short cuts, I'm finding out.

Resorted to a drift to get joint off the axle shaft. Got it all cleaned up and re-greased. Now, just the finishing details.

FCPEuro has a write up on how to replace the inner boot for an 01 S60. The inner joint is different from my 07 V70. The rollers on the 01 tripod only rotate around a fixed axis. The rollers on my 07 rotate and pivot. So, Volvo changed the joint design at some point.

I suspect the stakes to hold the tripod in the carrier are a later thing. Probably more for manufacturing and installation, than anything else. If you over extended the axle in normal driving, which really shouldn't happen, you could probably still yank the tripod out.

Went to replace the transmission axle seal. What came out is the first 2 pictures. What I replaced it with is the last two. I installed the rubber side out. But, then realized seal spring is on the outside. I thought they usually went on the inside. It also sits a few mm deeper in the transmission. If I start hemorrhaging transmission fluid, I'll know it's wrong.

I tried this couple of weeks ago. Had to give up. Had it all remove and it took some time. It got way too hot (31deg C) and I didnít have any more energy ... Iíll likely leave this for my mechanic. Heís got the tools and itís only an hour of labour. Good luck.

One gripe I have with the axle seals is the mounting depth. Most seal openings will be machined with a small lip, so the seal always sits at the correct depth. But, not Volvo. You can drive those seals pretty deep into the transmission, if you're not careful. But, Volvo has a special tool for doing it! If you don't get them at an even depth, they'll leak.

Yes. This is what @bigalpinemachine said as well. He took about 20-30 min to tap in, slowly, to the same depth the original was at.

Iíll leave this for my mechanic. If anything goes wrong, I just take it back for warranty work

For those reading this thread, the easier way is to get rid of the "Big Round Rubber Cushion".

This is bc I hate using dremel to get rid of the dimples on the Tripod, then I may have to restake the Tripod etc.

      For my 2004 V70 2.5T:
      - D/C Outer CV Joint (C-Clip + CV Removal Tool).
      - Used Angle grinder to remove the "Big Round Rubber Cushion".
      - Once the Outer CV Joint and the "Big Round Rubber Cushion" are removed, the INNER CV Boot is very easy (just clean old grease, add new grease and attach new boot, assuming the INNER boot has not cracked open yet).

Yes, the official way (according to VIDA) to replace the inner boot is to disassemble the outer joint, remove the harmonic balancer (aka big round rubber cushion), then remove the inner boot.
