      T3 or t5 twin engine?

      Hey there,

      I've been hanging around before committing with a XC40 and have finally decided it was a go! 🙂

      My choices (budget) are between either a

      1) beautiful T3 RDesign Red fusion, manual transmission as I love the "old analog feel" of changing gears or

      2) an all black (my original choice of colour) Momentum Plus T5 (hybrid, so automatic transmission only 😞 )

      These choices where put together with the help of the dealer: the Diesels are out cuz according to him my daily comute would trash the D3 engine ( ~12 miles 100% around town in rush hours between the kid's schools and work).

      Equipment is going to be the
      - Xenium (AC and Panoramic glass roof),
      - Park aid with 360ļ and
      - Versatility (keyless, cargo net, folding rear seats, etc)
      - 5 year maintenance contract

      Any feedback will be highly appreciated!

      I've never heard, that certain driving would trash a motor. (unless you're racing it) I think the salesman is full of S#$#@ about the D3. I would go with the D3, I wish they offered them in the USA.

      His arguments seemed legit: with such short trips (15 miles, half in the morning and the other half in the end of the day) the engine wouldn’t be finishing the particle clean cycles..

      I currently drive a diesel , has 70k miles, 6 years.. and at least once a week I leave it in the garage and can hear the main ventilation running for quite a while. Also the mpg goes way up that day..

      But yes, I first went to the dealership with a D3 in mind.

      Diesel economy is also not great until the engine reaches a certain temperature

      T3 is 3cyl gasoline engine, available in Europe. I'd take T5 PHEV, so nice for driving in city. Purchase payment is higher than T3 but totally worthy of it.

      So, imagining I go with the PHEV..

      I’ll be holding the XC40 for around 6+ years. By then the traction battery would be around 80% capacity at best.

      How do you think it would hold against the t3 resale value wise?


      A new battery could cost between 2k up to 10k from what I found in other phevs forums. So, why would the next owner buy this vehicle over the almost equivalent t3?

      PS. I know someone would need a crystal ball to answer this with any certainty but, as far as we can guess, would the T3 be more valuable?

      If you will get rid of the car 6 years old, it is always painful financially as you pay for the most depreciation period. Maybe T3 will lose less value. Or a car cheaper than XC40 could do even better.

      If I need a car for only 6 years, I'd start with a CPO car or even older used car.

      I'm curious to see when Volvo will start care by Volvo with used cars. It could be lower cost for several years ownership.

      Well I did considered it.. I’m selling my 6 year old for 10-12k and it costed me 24k to acquire (around 200€ month to own).

      I’m hoping to pull that again with the xc40.

      I believe there is a right timing for selling. Somewhere between still enough demand and not interesting anymore (/you can find better deals with semi-new models).

      If I miss that window with the xc40 I’ll be more than glad to keep it until it falls apart. Specially if it’s the rdesign.

      I’m just afraid of the running costs of a gasoline engine... on the other hand, a PHEV might loose the ev range quite fast after the 6-7 year due to battery degradation.

      Any thoughts on that?

      PHEV battery is warranted for 8 years. So mostly it should be fine for 8 years, as designed and tested. After 8 years it is a question mark. But maybe it will degrade to 60% after 12 years, if I am optimistic. Anyhow, plenty of EV PHEVs are still running after 6 years. 10 to 12 years is the real proof of how far they run.

      I’ll cross my fingers if I end up with the PHEV!

      Somewhere the Volvo warranty for those 8 years was less than 40%* to be eligible for warranty replacement.. Mitsubishi does 80 or 70% depending on the market..

      * can’t find the source right now but have find this info in the forums somewhere

      So in the end.. beautiful t3 or “rational” t5 twin?

      Tried the manual second. Didn’t had to drive 100 meters to make up my mind! &#x1f609;

      Fusion Red is also much better than black color.
      Drove a grey one.. on the driveway saw a red fusion rdesign.. asked if it was the same car!!

      Amazing! &#x1f609;

      The thought of spending almost 1000€ a year in gasoline when I could spend less than half in electricity instead.. makes me sad..

      Nobody can speculate what resale values will be in 6 years. If fuel is cheaper than today, perhaps the T3 resells better. If fuel prices rise dramatically the T5 might be the better choice financially.

      I would drive them both but my guess is the T5 TE is the better (more power) drive.

      I ended going for the t5 twin engine.

      Dealer got one of each for me to see.

      Always liked black cars.. sorry &#x1f609;

      Red fusion with the black top is also beautiful!

      About the engine, it was more about the consumption than performance.
