Certified by Volvo pre-owned sales saw significant gains as well

ROCKLEIGH, N.J. (Sep 4, 2019) - Volvo Car USA LLC, (VCUSA) reported its eighth straight month of sales increases in the U.S. with 9,194 vehicles sold in August, an increase of 2.5 percent from the same period last year. Year-to-date VCUSA has sold 68,109 vehicles, an increase of 4.4 percent from the previous year.

The American-made S60 sedan saw the greatest percentage-increase in sales, 58, followed by the XC40, XC90 and XC60 SUVs, which were up 15, 13 and three percent, respectively, from last year.

“August was our eighth consecutive month of growth and represents our best year since 2007,” said Anders Gustafsson, President and CEO, Volvo Car USA and Senior Vice President Americas. “Certified by Volvo sales also continued tremendous growth, up 30 percent year-to-date,” he added. “In July Certified by Volvo was the fastest-growing Certified program in the US, according to independent data.”

August also saw the expansion of Care by Volvo, the company’s popular vehicle subscription program. Now customers can use the updated Care by Volvo mobile app to subscribe to XC90, XC60 and V60 Cross Country, in addition to the XC40 and S60 models that initiated the program.

Sad to see V60/V60CC/V90/V90CC sales shrink down. Guess they can kill it now in America.

New S60 sales are doing great - S90 not so much.

XC sales are now 79% of total sales year to date. Can it get to 90%?

I think volvo no longer prefers to sell the S90 due to tariffs on Chinese products

That may be said tongue in cheek, and while I don't expect those models to ever sell in huge numbers, they were still milking the older P3 V60s last year. SPA V60s and V60CCs are just starting to hit dealers so maybe they'll pick up a bit as the year goes on, particularly if they start incentivizing them and shrinking the price gap between, say, a loaded Subaru Outback and an entry level V60CC. As it stands, that difference is about $7K for the new 2020 Outbacks, and they even have the fancy portrait screen infotainment just like the Volvo now Don't get me wrong, I'd still take the V60CC and see the value in that $7K differential, but the American market LOVES their stinkin' Outbacks.

My anecdotal experience is most people don’t even know the V60/V90 models even exist. Based on comments from people I’ve met since we acquired our V90 about a year ago, some of these folks were driving high end German cars and were rather awed by my mundane V90 T6 Inscription. Sort of a best kept secret thing I suppose...

Perhaps, or dealers just don't order them for inventory in the US because they don't sell all that well.

Volvo USA is now a 4 pony show. The XC90, XC60, XC40, and S60. I remember prior to the II Gen XC90, Volvo was only a 2 pony show, the XC60 and the S60. But Volvo should get to it's immediate sales goal of 100,000 cars in the US in 2019.

Wish they keep one wagon and CC variant around at least. I still hope to get one such unicorn in future.

They weren't able to keep both V90 and V70 in the past. Now it is the same story of V90 and V60.

Volvo Cars reports 10.2 per cent global sales growth in August

      Sep 05, 2019 ID: 256951

Volvo Cars reported a solid sales performance in August, with global volumes up 10.2 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Total sales during the month reached 47,796 cars, as all regions of US, China and Europe reported a volume growth in August.

In the January to August period, Volvo Cars’ total sales reached 443,168 cars, up 7.6 per cent compared with the same period last year.

Strong demand for Volvo’s award winning SUVs led by the XC60, and followed by the XC40 and the XC90, supported the sales performance in August. The company’s latest models like the US-built S60 sedan, V60 estate and V60 Cross Country also contributed to the increased volumes.

European sales during the month reached 16,639 cars, up 11.5 per cent compared with the same period last year. Volvo’s top three markets in the region, Sweden, United Kingdom and Germany reported growth of 29.4 per cent, 30.8 per cent and 8.6 per cent respectively in August, compared with the same period last year. The XC60 and the XC40 were the highest selling models in the region during the month.

US sales in August stood at 9,194 cars, up 2.5 per cent compared with the same period last year. XC90 was the top selling model in the region during the month, followed by the XC60.

Sales in China last month reached 14,212 cars, up 24.8 per cent, compared with the same period last year. The strong performance came on the back of continued high demand for the locally produced XC60 and the S90.

A detailed breakup of Volvo’s regional sales is given below.

Looking at XC90 numbers, Volvo sold 7,222 worldwide in August, while selling 3,163 XC90s in the US. That's 43.8% of Volvo XC90 sales were US sales. Overall, Volvo sold 19.2% of their cars in the US. The XC90 is Volvo's American car. Americans like big SUVs. Can anyone say XC100?

American will love XC100, just like they buy Navigator, Escalade, etc. Or a pick up truck could be even better.
Would be the first ever European brand pickup truck. Good to fill the gap below Volvo semi truck.

Yes, with Volvo's big sellers in the US maxing out, Volvo needs a new product for the US market. A big SUV. And an pickup too, made in South Carolina, of course.

And I wonder what SPA2 is for? More batteries on the all-electric XC90 and the XC90 hybrids, or is it for the XC100? Here's an interesting quote by Håkan.

"We are not excluding the idea of additions, especially in very core segments like the SUV. I think we are looking into this possibility now. You should not exclude the idea that there might be a bigger one, but maybe also a smaller one. We will surprise you about that in the future."

I don't need a pickup, and I'm not a pickup truck type, but if Volvo made a pickup, I wouldn't be able to resist buying it. Just the novelty.

That would be a great idea but I think I'm just going to buy a Golf.
