So the injector rebuild kit came with pintles but no spacers. I think the broken piece is actually the spacer and these injectors didn't have pintles.

The top injector is how it came out of the fuel rail. The bottom is with the rebuild kit. Should i not use the pintles if they didn't have them before? Either way i think the spacer is important because it keeps the o-ring in place. Thoughts?

You think FCP could be selling counterfeit belts?? I would think they got their products directly from the manufacturers.

And as much as I would love to put genuine volvo parts on everything - my skill level and budget for this project don't really justify it (yet). I know the purists will disagree, but hopefully this all goes smoothly and i can step it up with a V70R next.
Most of the parts I get are direct from the OE supplier, not Genuine Volvo. I only get Genuine Volvo when it's a critical part and I either can't get direct from the OE supplier or don't know who it was. Timing belt, serp belt, PCV, critical seals, are the only thing most people are touching that I get Genuine Volvo for. Not worth taking chances on those parts.

Good to know! Haven't installed the belts yet, so I'll just exchange those. Actually, come to think of it, that's really the only parts that aren't OE or Genuine Volvo! Besides some hose clamps and the k&n intake (which i haven't installed yet, and may hold off anyways). So thats an easy fix. Thank you!

      solid move

I'd run a stock filter. K&N don't have the best track record with these cars.

Update on the fuel injectors.. Got a response from the seller of the refresh kit. They said the Bosch III injectors only need the 2 o-rings, a filter, and a pintle cap - but no spacer/washer. Except now I'm confused because the injectors in the car had a spacer/washer but no pintle cap. And i would have left them as-is if i hadn't noticed one of the spacers was broken.??? How are your injectors setup? I'm thinking either/or is fine - since the purpose of both is to keep the o-ring on.

So, in case anyone was wondering, I got a final answer on the fuel injector dilemma! Turns out, the Bosch III injectors accept three types of pintle caps - universal, cone, and washer styles. Go figure! Therefore, I will not be recommending the seller I got my rebuild kit from, solely because they did not know this, but also because they subsequently made me feel stupid for asking...

Their response was: "The brown 'spacers' were actually your caps, they have gotten old and crusty and have broken off. There no washers on any Bosch III units."

Instead, I wish I would have found Mr. Injector's site earlier and purchased from him!

From his site: "There are 3 cap types used on these injectors. The universal will work on any of the injectors. If you would like the OEM style cap choose it from the list."

      Mr. Injector Website: https://www.mrinjectorparts.com/
      Bosch III Injector Kit: https://www.mrinjectorparts.com/stor..._Kits_002.html

$28 will get you 6 filters, 12 o-rings, and 6 pintles (you can select universal, washer, or cone from the drop down). He doesn't have a 5-cylinder option, so you'll have a spare set to keep on hand. Only $3.75 for shipping anywhere in the USA. Pretty good deal if you ask me - considering these injectors are like $100/ea if you have to replace one.

Finished rebuilding the injectors with the kit I bought - including new filters, o-rings, and UNIVERSAL style pintle caps. Still undecided if I'm going to stick with these pintles or splurge on another set to get the washer style. I feel like I've put enough time into figuring it out that I should do it OEM. Anyways, definitely recommend replacing the filters. It was a bit of a hassle on the first couple, but then i got the hang of it. You can buy a tool specifically for this purpose, or essentially just use a regular screw that fits. I opted to get the tool since this was my first time. I will post pictures of the old filters vs. new filters to see the difference.

Mr Injector does great work. Having the set super cleaned and blueprinted is very much worth the cost. It’s about $20 per.

The straight end attaches ti a small metal line attached to the hard water pipe on the back of the block that provides vacuum to the fuel pressure regulator down low near the steering rack on the r/h side. The elbow on this photo connects to the turbo inlet pipe, supplying vacuum.

i got the silicone hose kit for the TCV, but the old hoses are so brittle and crusty and stuck... I was trying gently as to not damage anything, but sure enough the yellow one was so stuck that it pulled the nipple thing right off the tcv along with the hose! The other ones are equally stuck so i stopped trying to avoid breaking anything else.

What do i do now?? Replace the TCV? How do i get the other hoses off without making things worse? Ugh.

Is this worth $90? The only other one on IPD is aftermarket for $70.

This is the only upgrade for tcv, its from the P2R and later volvos. The rest are MAC valves and not stable under boost, do not use.

Good to know! Ordered from FCP today. Probably time to replace anyway - if the hoses were that corroded I doubt the current one was even functioning properly!

Use a sharp box cutter to carefully slit the old hose and gently pry it open to release it from the fitting/nipple. That prevents breaking stuff.

great idea, thanks! i feel dumb for not thinking of that before breaking the nipple off the TCV... however, this will definitely help when getting the other ends of the lines off the turbo - which are also stuck.

Anyone know what size/type (or name) of this hose that goes from the bottom of the turbo inlet to this check valve thing? Also name/part number for the valve? I can't really read what it says.

hahahaha that IAC strap is a pain, just gotta keep massaging it till it pops in. Here's a tip: don't be afraid to work by feel on these cars. There are a lot of things you can't see but for the most part they are easy. You just have to use your other senses.

I think i figured out the strap - the strap goes across the top, the single hump(?) end slides in the back side, and the double hump thing slides into the front side. I mean, its sturdy and doesnt move. I guess problem solved!

Yeah I guess since it was all sold as a single part, i just wanted to ask if it came apart to replace just the hose. First-timer problems!

      1998 v70 t5 build - white reaper

You’re on the right track. Replace every inch of rubber hose on this car if you want it trouble free. Not hard nor expensive. You can tackle the intercooler hoses later unless they’re cut. Most ‘98s have the charcoal canister in the LF fender well. More rubber in there and remove that fender to find more and the evap valve with more. Remove sections of hose and take it to a good auto parts store for bulk hose measurements. They can get a close enough ID to work for you. Pretty much reuse all clamps since they are superior quality. No need to replace the check valves unless they’re cracked.

can't reuse Oetiker clamps obviously so just get a bunch of them somewhere for those applications. The proper Oetiker clamp pliers make life 100000000x easier installing them, too.

Great point. While all screw clamps are reusable, the pinch clamps are not.

and you really want to reuse the screw clamps because the Volvo ones are really good.

so i got everything put back together, refilled all the fluids, and cranked the engine. needless to say, it does NOT run properly... it sputters and dies. what a let-down! no clue what it could be. i did not do anything major that would result in this situation (i don't think so anyways!).

it sounds as if the timing is off or it's misfiring, although i did not mess with the timing/serp belts (in the process of returning the contitechs and reordering). i suppose i will start with double-checking the spark plugs, wires, distributor cap, vacuum lines, etc.

here is a list of everything i did under the hood - any thoughts on where i could have gone wrong?? i hope i didn't mess anything up earlier when i was trying to remove the ecu box that i did not need to remove in the end... ugh.

      1) removed battery
      2) removed air box assembly
      3) removed spark plugs/wires/distributor cap
      4) drained oil/coolant
      5) removed coolant reservoir
      6) attempted to remove ecu box (thinking i would need to in order to have better access to timing/serp belts, but ultimately gave up after finding out i did not need to remove it)
      7) removed manifold
      8) replaced PCV
      9) pulled/rebuilt fuel injectors
      10) re-installed fuel injectors
      11) re-installed manifold
      12) installed new spark plugs/wires/distributor cap/rotor
      13) replaced upper/lower radiator hoses
      14) replaced thermostat
      15) installed coolant reservoir w/new hoses
      16) broke nipple on boost pressure valve
      17) replaced boost pressure valve
      18) tcv silicone hoses
      19) re-installed air filter assembly
      20) replaced air filter
      21) replaced oil filter
      22) filled with 10w-30 oil
      23) filled with 50/50 volvo coolant
      24) re-installed battery

If you have a code reader, you can read the codes with the key in position 2. I just realized you have a 98'. Vida only works on 99 and newer
