Volvo Cars is looking to place itself in a leadership position among global automakers with regard to carbon emissions. Having already resolved to stop introducing any new gas-only vehicles, and setting an ambitious target of 50% pure-EV sales by 2025, the automaker today announced an ambitious new plan to cut the lifecycle carbon footprint of its cars by 40% between 2018 and 2025.
Of course, growing its EV and hybrid sales will go a long way toward helping Volvo accomplish that goal, but tailpipe emissions aren't the only emissions being taken into account here. Vehicle manufacturing itself releases plenty of carbon, and Volvo plans to look at how it can shrink its carbon footprint through every step of the process.
Volvo has set targets of a 25% reduction in carbon emissions from its global supply chain, a 25% reduction in emissions from the company's overall operations (manufacturing, logistics, etc.), and a 25% share of recycled plastics in new cars.
This push for a drastically reduced lifecycle carbon footprint is a necessary step as Volvo Cars works toward its ultimate goal of making its manufacturing network completely climate neutral by 2040.
"We are transforming our company through concrete actions, not symbolic pledges," says Volvo Cars Chief Executive Håkan Samuelsson. "So at Volvo Cars we will address what we control, which is both our operations and the tailpipe emissions of our cars. And we will address what we can influence, by calling on our suppliers and the energy sector to join us in aiming for a climate neutral future."
Volvo plans to introduce a total of five fully electric cars by 2021 - three Volvo-branded models, and two from Polestar - starting with the Polestar 2 and Volvo XC40 Recharge. "Recharge" will serve as Volvo's new sub-brand for pure-electric and plug-in-hybrid vehicle models, although the Swedish automaker will also offer plenty of conventional hybrid vehicles.
