      Question Map Update via USB

So I've had a "software update available" message for a bit now, and finally got around to trying to resolve it. I've done the following on two different PCs (one Windows 7 and another running Windows 10):
      • new flash drive (32GB - the update is 1.5GB)
      • full (not quick) format with FAT32
      • launch the Volvo update app from browser and from Windows Explorer after downloading the EXE
      • download the update directly to USB
      • verify the update using the updater tool
      • insert the USB into the CarPlay/AndoidAuto port both with the car off and running

And the Sensus display has not responded to the update. I know it sees the stick (the USB app for media is enabled). I just can't seem to trigger the update.

Any Sensus veterans (I've only had my S90 since the end of August) have some tips they can share? Special chant that needs to be uttered, animal sacrifice, etc. that I may not be doing?

Try opening navigation and see if it then says it's not available. Try going for a drive with the drive plugged into the white USB port in the console.

That message has been around for a while now and never once have been able to figure out what it means. You can look through all the screens and see no updates available.

If Software Update Available message shows up, it's either the in-built Sensus apps or one of the region maps. If you have maps for the whole continent (ex: North America) installed, it will still give you a notification even if one of the states' map has an available update. I have never seen the Update available show up without reason. It's either the local region map or an application.

You need to click individually on each available option to see what updates are available.

Thanks for the suggestion. Tried that and still no joy.

Mine's been finicky like this every time I've updated the maps. I just plug and unplug things until it works. Sometimes I end up going wherever I'm going and just try it at every stoplight.

Its been a while since I first formatted my USB flash drive but I seem to remember trying a couple of different formatting options before it worked. I'd don't recall but maybe try exFAT, NTFS instead of FAT32 . May also differ based on the size of flash drive?? Also, make sure you unzip the files into the root of the flash drive not a sub-folder.

I tried again last night while driving home. One time when I removed it, I got a pop-down notification that the map update had paused and asking me to re-insert the USB. Unfortunately, no matter how many times I re-inserted it, I never got anywhere.

Make sure there is no other flash drive connected to the other usb port except the white one for the update purpose...

The USB socket fit gets looser with time and use, just as in the previous generation of Volvos. Try putting a piece of electrical tape on one side of the USB stick to tighten up the fit. Works like a charm!

Socket is nice and tight in my car, and it detects anything else inserted fine.

It just seems to have issues "noticing" that I put a map update USB drive in the socket.

Maybe it means a dealer software update is available.

Try updating the Voice Command files first.

Buy a three-inch-long USB-to-USB dongle, plug it into the Volvo receptacle and never unplug it. Use the other end to plug in whatever you wish and the Volvo socket will stay tight forever.

I have been updating regularly in my 2018 S 90 and 2019 S60. They both use the same update. The size of your update sounds suspicious. Whenever I do it the updates are approx. 36 GB, not 1.5. Also, I use a 64 GB USB stick, for that reason. I have tried different formats and most work, but I found exFat works the best/fastest. My 2019 S60 has 2 USB ports and it does not work in the white port, only in the black one. It's detected shortly after engine start. My S90 only has 1 port, so no choice there. I have never had a problem doing this. I have extra minor complications running the Volvo software because all my computers are Linux (Ubuntu). There are easy work arounds if anyone out there needs to learn what they are. But your doing it in Windows should "just work". My single biggest suspicion is that you are using a USB stick that is too small and somehow the software sees that and is not installing the entire update. The instructions clearly call for a 64 GB USB stick.

I thought the non-white port functioned only as a charging port. 2018 V90, in my case.

If you have a phone connected to CarPlay or Android Auto in the white port, the non-white port works only as a charging port.

Both USB ports provide data when you're not using these features.

One thing that I noticed yesterday is that the installed third party apps, that have an update available, seem to have an installation priority. I tried to install Road Maps via USB first but nothing was happening - no message.

I then saw the third party app updates and started the installation of those (TuneIn and Spotify which is a monster update). After the third party app updates were finally done and several minutes thereafter, the Road Maps 1183 finally started updating.

Might be a coincidence, but that is my story.

I just did my S60 and this time it worked in the white port, but not the black port. Maybe I'm just remembering it incorrectly. No other problems with the install though.

That's not true at least for my 2019 S90; I can use the non-white port for my USB music just fine while having Android Auto connected.

Updates are performed through the USB port bounded by the white box. The other USB port is limited for charging and possibly streaming of music such as an iPod or equivalent device/mode.
