Not a car for sale, but an interesting discussion on car buying habits...seems like a lot of us are NOT the typical car buyer.

      Two things:
Who on earth is buying a car with an 8 to 9 year term??
Who the F can afford an average 37K car? Yeah, yeah - A LOT of you guys can. I see them all over the road, and am amazed by them.
We live in an affluent area, where it's not unusual to see Maserati's and Aston's, high end Jags, Benz's, BMW's, R8's, A8's, and Tesla S's are like Camrys here. But - it's insane to spend that much on anything on four wheels that isn't appreciating.
Isn't the rule of thumb something like 20 bucks per thousand? So, people are paying 2 grand a month on T8 XC90s??

A lot of people can "afford" these cars, but whether it's the best financial decision for someone is debatable. People can get ridiculous car loans nowadays. People with a 40k income driving a 37k car is not unheard of.

glad to see its not just bottom feeders like me that don't get it. not sure what the $20 per thousand rule is. 6 to 7 years ago when I was complaining about the high costs of things, a friend informed me $100 is the new $20.

my rule of thumb is to try and get a year out of each thousand I spend on a car. I usually exceed that even with repair costs.

anyway hats off to the people that buy these new cars, they serve a dual purpose, keeping the used market down while providing the inventory of the future.
to some degree it comes down to the era you are brought up in. in the '60s and 70's my grandmother was still living like she was in the great depression. I came of age in the recession of the Carter years and the oil embargo with interest rates in the double digits. for some people (like me) spending habits can get so deeply ingrained as to last a lifetime (watch out skywolf!).

fancy cars, I get it. big gas guzzling trucks in the era of climate change....(pet peeve?)....tailgating you while on the cell phone...definite pet peeve.

While I would like to say I don't think anyone is spending $2k/mo on a T8 XC90.. I'm probably wrong. Someone has to have some seriously ****** credit to get that bad of a rate on that car and if they're that stupid they're probably buying an M4.

I was shocked to see on SwapALease that where was some fool on there with the same car I was looking to swap who's payment was $1,380/mo. How in the world does someone get that lease payment. Over the term of the lease they will have paid 90% of the car's value when it was new.

I have no sympathy for people who sign loans they can't possibly afford. This goes for car loans, mortgages and student loans. Yes, I include student loans on there. Not everyone needs to go to college and nobody NEEDS to go to an expensive school and everyone who goes to college should evaluate their goals in life. Taking out massive debt to fund a degree that has no job prospects in the market is worse than financing a new car you can't afford. End of rant

That's the mantra of the kids complaining these days. Blaming their parents and grandparents for all their troubles, how they can't afford to buy anything. They expect a six figure job when they graduate. I go into the grocery store these days and there's no teenagers working there anymore. When i was growing up it was the rush to get the summer jobs. I worked almost the entire time I was in high school and college. Oh, and I went to a community college with smaller class sizes and 1/5th the cost I graduated with job skills and experience, no debt and the motivation to seek advancement. I didn't go on MySpace and complain that life was unfair. Life is rarely fair lol.

Best example of lowered expectations in the real world:
I called the state court to ask why my paperwork for a license had not been issued yet.
Clerk: The judge hasn't looked at it yet
Me: The law says the judge has 45 days to approve or it's automatically approved
Clerk: That's just the way it is.
Me: So when I get a speeding ticket I can just tell the judge the limit doesn't matter because, that's just the way it is?

I have zero Volvo content to contribute, per norm. I might get a new batt for it this week, then I might just leave the keys in the ignition so it can get stolen, then recovered, then let you guys know where it is on coparts.

Maybe he rolled negative equity from a prior lease into the deal to give himself that big a payment.

We are a monthly payment driven society - it's all about instant gratification and worry about tomorrow tomorrow. Pretty much everything is on monthly payments and most folks don't think about saving for retirement or saving for their kids' college education until it's way too late. I could go for a page or two but I'll stop there.

Get the T8 hybrid. It has a higher payment and isnít worth as much at the end.

      Alright hive mind...
Jared went and looked at that 06 XC70 today. Most everything checked out. The knock against it is that it's a lifetime Boston car and some of the metal suspension bits show some surface rust, maybe even edging past surface rust. Specifically, the control arms, trailing arms, and end links. Everything else about the car seems to be what I expected (meh paint, no options, clean interior, lots of recent mechanical maintenance). Would those of you who are familiar with buying northern cars consider that pretty standard and nothing to worry about or would those make you hesitate?

Wichita had a bit of rust like that on the suspension bits. It's hard to say what's normal when I've really only got that example. Are you sure you want the absolutely no options? Not knocking the car for what it is but I think if you waited you could get better.

Besides - who's going to buy Springfield if you buy this?

I do not care one single bit about about options, honestly. I almost never use anything this doesn't have. Seat heaters - Never. Parking sensors - meh. Nav - I wouldn't mind it, but don't need it. HU-850 - That I wouldn't mind, but don't need. I could get better equipped, but I'm not sure I could get better recent maintenance.

Oh please, I tried that route already. lol

I wouldn't think this would make or break the deal, maybe even give you some leverage on the price so you can put the money back into the car. Up to you really.

      (1) It never fails, you make a purchase and then the car you've been waiting for suddenly pops up for sale out of nowhere.

      (2) Literally anyone on the forum would be interested
