Jared went and looked at that 06 XC70 today. Most everything checked out. The knock against it is that it's a lifetime Boston car and some of the metal suspension bits show some surface rust, maybe even edging past surface rust. Specifically, the control arms, trailing arms, and end links. Everything else about the car seems to be what I expected (meh paint, no options, clean interior, lots of recent mechanical maintenance). Would those of you who are familiar with buying northern cars consider that pretty standard and nothing to worry about or would those make you hesitate?
That wouldn't bother me in the least. You'll be replacing those parts at some point anyway...

      Heís back indoors now.

The BMW was getting a spa treatment inside before being unceremoniously dumped at work. If all goes well the next person to drive the bmw will be the new lessee.

LOL I almost never use nav either. It freaks out all my friends. I remember one of the first trips I took with them we're driving to go camping in VT and I'm not running nav and they're like "how do you know where you're going." Uhhh....I looked at a map?

I was shocked to see on SwapALease that where was some fool on there with the same car I was looking to swap who's payment was $1,380/mo. How in the world does someone get that lease payment. Over the term of the lease they will have paid 90% of the car's value when it was new.

I have no sympathy for people who sign loans they can't possibly afford. This goes for car loans, mortgages and student loans. Yes, I include student loans on there. Not everyone needs to go to college and nobody NEEDS to go to an expensive school and everyone who goes to college should evaluate their goals in life. Taking out massive debt to fund a degree that has no job prospects in the market is worse than financing a new car you can't afford. End of rant
Agree 100%. It's the same thing as people leasing $1000 phones through their carrier. "yeah I can afford $xx/month." I can't fathom spending that kind of money on a phone. Or, with the possible exception of a house, buying something I couldn't afford to pay cash for.

I have a good friend whose (boyfriend/ex-boyfriend/former ex-boyfriend/whatever I lost track, all I know is I think he's an idiot) went to music school for a year and has $70k in debt from that. The best part is he was out there at all the anti-student debt rallies during the last election cycle. I'm for affordable/free public/community college, but come on! Knowingly racking up that kind of debt and then complaining about it is insane. My #1 criteria in college selection? Being able to commute so I could save $50k not living on campus. I applied to every engineering school I could commute to and took the best offer I got. None of my friends outside of Volvoland can figure out how I can afford to own 3 cars...and everyone who doesn't know me well thinks I'm rich. Like.......don't live on campus and learn which end is up on a wrench? There you go LOL.

The Universities these days require students to live on campus as part of the "student experience". That's a load of ******* ********. Besides the only thing students seem to be learning at most universities today is how to protest and whine. Meanwhile the schools are spending a fortune on overpriced buildings, events, staff while actually doing very little to teach anyone meaningful skills.

We seriously get candidates in for interviews who just graduated and have this distorted belief that they deserve a job and when we don't call them back their mom calls us.

      LOL!!!! That's actually hilarious.

I got out of having to live on campus by being within the approved commuter distance. But, to your point, I don't really feel like I learned all that much in college. I could 100000% do my current job without a degree. I honestly got more out of teaching kids sailing during the summers, and I made way more lasting friendships with the people I got to work with there than I did in college. I thought most of my classmates were morons.

"Learning something" at college is really only a small portion of what you're there for, particularly in a field as broad as engineering. You're primarily going to college to prove you "can learn" something, but what you learn might not be 100% applicable to what you do coming out of college. When you consider what engineering disciplines a typical college offers (mech, ele, *insert one or two more things*), they can't possibly cover every possible career path of the students. Shortly after I graduated, I felt the same way as you. Now I've developed a better understanding of the limitations and the true purpose of the program. By graduating with certain grades I showed to potential employers that I was teachable and came prepacked with some basic concepts. Once you get into an industry, then you actually learn all the relevant items. The college degree is just a piece of paper which proves you can learn stuff at a certain level, with a particular level of complexity, by degree.

I lived in the res halls my freshman year and was an RA my sophomore year, now I'm a senior so I think I can input on this a lil. Every experience is different, but I don't think people give enough credit to how living in a residence hall can develop an individual. I don't disagree that they are willfully overpriced, but I ABSOLUTELY wouldn't be where I am now if it weren't for how involved I was during two years in the residence halls.

The things I'm gaining most from university are people skills, how to lead others, and how to build the most effective team. And if I had to live in residence halls for a couple years to set myself up to get full time engineer levels clout in my industry experiences, then it's worth it in my opinion.

That's a totally valid point, but I think that model of progression is part of the reason we have a problem, because everyone feels like they have to go to college to get in that door. Not saying that it's necessarily bad, but there should be more socially accepted ways than just going to college to get on that trajectory.

I think it also depends where you go. Nothing of value ever seemed to happen in the residence halls where I went. I don't feel like I missed out on anything that I would have enjoyed. That said, looking back, I probably should have at least investigated McGill. Probably would have ended up paying similar or less in tuition and housing in Montrťal is super affordable compared to anything around here. I had a whole wave of friends start at McGill a couple years after I started college and I couldn't figure out why I suddenly had so many friends going there until they told me what they were paying and what their living expenses were. I'm sure my life would look a lot different had I done that, but I'm ultimately not sure I would have been better off for it.

The flip side of that is I would have missed out on a lot of other things by not living at home, and I might have gone nuts not having a machine shop in my basement. about 18 months ago we got flooded and it was probably close to a week before the water dropped enough for me to even be able to get down to the shop, and the yard was of course full of water too, so I basically got to try out apartment life. That experiment did not go well lol.

I donít even know how this is socially acceptable. I used to work for a company who hired tons of kids right out of college. They would come in and never have worked before in their life. Iím not talking never worked in a professional setting, Iím saying legitimately never worked before. They were the worst employees. They would not show up, be late, stay on their phone all day, get cranky when they didnít get their full hour lunch break, the list goes on. As the manager on site, I had to inevitably discipline them, and I would get moms attempting to contact me to talk about their child.

I once sent a kid home without pay for telling me to F**k Off and his mom showed up at the office demanding to speak to my manager because she felt that I was being too tough on her child. It was surreal.

I totally understand what your saying..

I was at a Halloween costume party with the wife this weekend. I went to my truck to put a painting we got at the party. Just was walking up to my truck and caught a early 20's kid setting empty beer cans on it. The kid and his friend thought it was funny. I started yelling at them that it's stupid. Then they wanted to fight. Will they we all talk, and at least one kid said sorry. Other kid just keep running his mouth.

Wife started getting in my butt for yelling at them, when we walked away. I told her that it's the point that you don't do that to anyones vehicle. So guys I am in the dog house for a bit for taking a stand against the youth.

I would be too. My wife wouldn't understand. It would have to be something extreme like kids jumping up and down on the hood before she would agree.
So unfortunate that people don't get it. Leaning up against a car with studded jeans, a zipper on a jacket, whatever. Cans?!? OMG. My cars are not show quality, but have some respect for other people's property!

That's amazing. We had a guy at the last job MANY years ago (I've been at this one 17 years almost) - watched him screw around all day long and do nothing on an internship. Wouldn't show up, played on the internet, etc. Approached him several times, and he didn't listen.
We wouldn't sign off on his internship at the end of the summer and he kept calling and calling and got the school counselor and his parent involved, asking to get credit because he needed it to graduate. Hope he learned a lesson.
