I had this last year on my v70 with ice building up in the wheel wells, but only with 17 in wheels. My 2003 always had 16 in wheels and never had an ice buildup issue.

Volvo sells plastic dust shields that help with dirt/snow/ice accumulation on rims.

Sounds like the build-up is on the rear CV shaft though.

I see the exploded parts diagram. Any images with this on a car on the lift?
I'm still having trouble visualizing the placement so I can tell if we have on our V70s.

Me too (on wheels). I found it incredible how much a little ice could cause such huge vibration. Scared me so bad that I pulled into a local garage in the town I was travelling through to make sure my wheel wasn't going to fly off. I had no clue what the vibration was but 30min of melting and a quick rinse eliminated it altogether. I suppose you could try spraying some silicon spray or on the axle and boot to make it more slippery...

The shape will fit the rear arm, however Volvo didn't think well about how they are attached. First, I didn't want to drill the arm, since MY05+ has it already perforated. Then, two bolts on the lower edge is nothing when the car rolls on the gravel, and when it rolls on the gravel, you really want this protection.

This is from my first try:

It was a lousy job ended up like that:

Next year I did it better, almost like in Volvo's instructions, however gravel had it bent over, down to the road and they were destroyed. I bought another pair, but didn't install them yet. The front edge is really asking for couple of bolts for the protection to stay in place under the rocks bombardment, but the hole will weaken the arm a lot, and I really overload XC70 in my trips. Still thinking...

I may just spray in underneath of the car with Noxudol 1600, like I did on my rust-prone Tundra:

Say, 2-3 thick layers in the spots that I know to suffer from the gravel, and it will protect the metal for life.

What if you welded a couple of studs on the arm that way could thread a nut on and not weaken the arm

The stud really needs to go through the arm, a couple of welds won't make it. I may weld a plate for reinforcement, and drill/tap the hole through it.

I take my XC for a long trip every year, 1200-1300 miles of gravel up north in Canada. That's a lot of underbelly damage

Ah ok, thanks! How many screws do you need to mount the 04 version (p/n 30647009)?

Anyone know where to buy the deflectors? Local Volvo dealer said they are back ordered with no ETA on when they could get them in. And Iím not seeing them online.

The one that deflects. Not the one that covers the bottom of the control arm.

Welp nevermind. Despite what some of the online fitment-VIN verifiers claimed, I donít think these will on a R wagon. After looking at some install pictures the arm it attaches to is different on my R and I donít see how it would work.

VIDA says 30714566, most likely already installed. Something like 05+ XC70 has.
