Hello,

We are looking to purchase a late model, pre-owned 2018 XC90. I've been shopping extensively and have found a couple options.

1) We found one from a dealership appx 500 miles from us. Since it's pre-owned, they are not willing to ship the vehicle so I would have to travel, make the purchase and drive back.

2) Carmax has a many XC90s available to choose from and for a price, they are willing to have it ship to our local location. However, they do not offer any manufacturer warranty and I've read mixed feedback about the experiences.

Has any purchased a Volvo from them recently that can share your experience? Is it worth it to purchase the extended warranty from Volvo (or Carmax version of the warranty)?

Thank you.

Definitely get the Volvo version of the extended warranty. This car has quite a bit of bugs...

I wouldn't call the 2018 buggy.

I'm pretty sure Volvo honors any remaining factory warranty - please correct me if I'm wrong. Any additional warranty beyond the factory warranty can be purchased for this vehicle (for a price).

Agree with thinking about USED xc90 to save $$. However, would rec. waiting for the right CPO. I personally would not go the carmax route for a vehicle like this. I would go CPO and buy some extra warranty too

I got my 2016 XC90 from CarMax along with MaxCare. Volvo dealers will still honor the OEM warranty as long as you're within the 4yr/50K limit. I used the carmax warranty once to help cover $2400 in repairs (approved it at a 3rd party Volvo specialist shop without much questioning) so it has almost paid for itself already. The roadside assistance and car rental worked out fine for me.

But it didn't cover a major incident I had where spark plug blew up damaging the engine (Volvo goodwill'd it thankfully) and I learned that VIP wouldn't have covered it either so there are limits to VIP as well.

I think it's ok to get it from carmax because maxcare seem legit to me and you can also buy the VIP warranty instead as well. In hindsight, I think I would have rather have waited longer and got a CPO. I think its the safer route as I think the quality of vehicle is higher and you get that OEM warranty extension AND can put VIP on top of that.

Also want to add, Carmax has a 5-day/500 mile money back guarantee so what I did was the day after taking delivery of the car, I took it to my local Volvo dealer to do an inspection (cost $190 for me) and fixes were covered under warranty. It's another way to reduce risk on a CarMax purchase.

Regarding extended warranty, I would just get it. Whether it's with Carmax or VIP. Maybe I'm just paranoid cuz I got a 2016 as 1st years are always problematic, I still think should something big fails, it's better to have some kind of safety net vs none if you plan to drive it past 50K.

I will soon be turning in my 2018 XC90 T5 R-Design Polestar for a 2020. 9300 miles. Absolutely fabulous vehicle. Unique and very rare. My dealer sold our last 2 vehicles to new owners from all across the country with no problems. Yes, a Volvo dealer. PM me if you want the sales manager's contact info.
