      Volvo S40 = chick car

Hate to break it to you, gentlemen, but the numbers don't lie... Volvo's S40 sedan was the #1 car for proportion of female buyers (57.9%) in 2011. Yeah, I know this is breaking news, lol. I believe it's ranking was still top 10 for some of the other years, but I dunno.

      https://www.autoblog.com/2012/03/27/...age-of-female/

      How does this affect you?

For myself, I never thought of the S40 as a woman's car, but I never thought about the S40 until I found one for sale anyway.

That’s hilarious— and so true in my family. Oldest daughter drives mine and loves it. Took it to college years ago and doesn’t want to give it back so her siblings can use it. Would rather I gift it to her than trade in for something newer that she can drive.

Son? “No thanks, Dad. Can I take the XC90 to college?”

It doesn’t affect me at all. But at least it doesn’t come with a lipstick holder like Homer’s Canyonero. Otherwise, I would know there’s something wrong with the car.

Can't say I'm surprised, I can see why its looks draw that demographic.

Ended up researching, looking for and eventually buying my first S40 specifically because years back I saw one in a parking lot and liked its happy looking front. In a world of trying-to-look-hardcore compacts it's refreshing that a small car isn't trying to have an angry demeanor. Part of the reason why I'll be in the market for a C30 if old faithful gives out - more of the same appeal, to me at least.

My stepdaughter didn't like my car for about 2 years while she had her permit. She hated every minute of the shared permit driving and was just an okay stick shift driver.
One day she drove it while I was not in it, and was excited about keeping on driving it. I pressed on the issue and asked what changed.
She said it, "Pushing on that gas pedal made me feel like a woman."

I do say I like my car quite a bit as well, and I understand the appeal. Cue Shania Twain on youtube.

I do see a lot of women driving S40/V50 but my wife does not seem to care for mine. I don't mind at all. It keeps my V50 safer

My lady drives our S40 90% of the time, and every time when my neighbor (woman) sees the car she'd say 'beauuuutiful car'.

I don't think my S40 (pre-facelift, with Dynamic trim and 17" wheels) is really a good looking car. I was pointing out an Acura TSX from the same era and telling my wife I thought it looked a lot better than the S40. She disagreed. So maybe the mild lines of the S40 appeal to feminine sensibilities, who knows lol...

Men used to design cars shaped like a woman's body. Now it's the opposite on both counts.

My wife is pretty fond of mine, especially fter I got the exhaust on it and cleaned up the throttle body, but I wouldn't say she's in love with it or anything. I will admit that the first time I saw one up close, newly purchased by one of her girlfriends, I thought "Nice car, but it's a Volvo". Now my other fun car, a Smurf blue '91 Miata, that's the car I get told is a chicks' car.

The better half bought the "PASSION RED" S40 R-Design in '09 and sold it on to me five years later. I made a man out of it by installing the Polestar performance tuning software...yesssss.
