      Seizing engine

      My engine has seized up a couple times, and Im thinking itll take a rebuild. Any idea how much that costs?

      I have an '87 245

      Describe your "seizing" engine symptoms. Hard to turn over? Doesn't kill gently?

      How many miles? Those engines should last 300,000 miles easily.

      Well, its seized up when Im driving. Last time, the engine made this terrible metallic rattling noise and just stopped. The time before that, it was a quiet, fluttering sound....and then it just stopped.

      Both times, when I'd try to start it up again, the cam had totally seized. alternator and starter are fine, but the cam is frozen. The shop had previously called it a fluke, but since it happened again, theres no way it can be. Im just worried that theres probably some damage after this last episode. Oh, and the engine has about 230K

      What did the guages read when the engine 'seized'? Water hot? Oil pressure low? MIL lit?

      Generally, what is referred to as an engine 'seizing' is when it runs out of oil, and the bearing surfaces overheat and friction-weld themselves together. Also known as the "point of tow return".

      Sounds like we're talking about a bad cylinder head. When it gets warm, the cam bearings aren't in line. Does this sound right? Is the timing belt OK? Is the tensioner OK, and is the cam lined up with its mating marks?

      Generally, a seized cam means many teeth missing on the timing belt
