Probably pulling the trigger on low mile 97 855NA. Issues?

So a buddy of mine who works at a dealership just took in a 97 855 on trade. Its a non turbo with the “luxury value” package so says the window sticker he found in the glovebox. Has leather, cold weather package/tracs, front fogs, and unique 15” wheels that I can’t find the name of. Front and rear bumpers are pretty beat (city parked) and one of the rear doors has a huge gouge in it. But otherwise it looks like it will clean up. Essentially it looks not abused but not extensively cared for.

So what I think is the good part is the fact that it only has 57k miles. Seems extremely low for a 97. Something like 2500 miles a year. Do these have issues from non use compared to having higher mileage? I’ve owned a few 240s and most recently an 04 V70 non turbo that I ran from 65k to 125k miles. I’m assuming this will be similar to my V70. Talk me into or out of it!

I purchased my 97 850R in 2012 with 82k miles on it. That comes out to around 5,500 miles per year.

For what it's worth, it ran perfectly fine until 132k when I burnt a valve and the head had to come off for repair.

Could be totally different than your experience but sharing nonetheless.

The more and harder these cars are driven (with proper maintenance), the better they age. My T-5R has done 296k with nothing more than routine maintenance. This car hasn't been driven and therefore hasn't had anything done to it, so you should expect it to need pretty much everything. If you can get it at a price point where you're ok with that, then, sure, go for it. But I would walk if you're going to be paying a premium for the headache of owning a low mileage P80. Also, have you verified the functionality of the odometer?

The wheels you mention may be Spica. Does it have a wing?

Also, is it a manual or auto car? This may help with value later should you decide its too much of a project.

Wheels are Spica’s! No rear wing. It’s an auto and I am not paying a premium for the miles. Essentially buying it at wholesale.

It currently has a low coolant light on, tracs off light, and cel. I’m hoping slightly low coolant or a bad sensors and that the tracs is just turned off.

      Two things come to mind:
1: Open the oil filler, shine a light in there and have a sniff.
2: Get a CarFax. My neighbor bought a mileage-too-good-to-be-true Honda, and it wasn't true.
1997 was a long time ago for the car not having been anywhere, seems to me.

Already verified with the Carfax and also the mileage went up from the first time he looked at it until the time it came in. I guess it could be flaking on and off and I won’t know for sure until I hook it up to OBD.

The leather drivers seat is still in one piece and not ripped open so I think the mileage is legit.

Time for a quick update. I ended up pulling the trigger and paying for it without seeing it two weeks ago. I finally made the 400 mile round trip to pick it up today. 3 hours going down on the train were easy the 5 hours in the rain driving back kind of sucked. The good news is the odometer registered the entire 200 miles home so I think the mileage is legit. It was a one owner from midtown Manhattan. Found some interesting things in the car some state park passes, directions to Woodstock NY printed out on paper, not to mention stickers for Montauk, Mystic, and Block Island. It appears to have been the typical get out of the city vacation car which was the same as my 04 V70.

Given the age I think its in a bit better shape cosmetically than my 04 was when I bought it five years ago. Back seat leather is perfect, front seats are still soft and mostly in one piece. It does have its share of NYC scars all around the outside. It drove pretty good the whole way back. The temp gauge fluctuated from 1/4 to a little more than 1/2 way. I’m thinking a sticky thermostat. In stop and go it got up to temp but constant speed on the highway it stayed around 1/4 up. Suspension is a little harsh and creaky so I’ll have some work there. There isn’t a timing belt change sticker in the engine compartment so that will be done asap as well. Other than that everything seemed to work besides the drivers seat heater being moderately to non existent heat. Some cosmetic clean up and she’ll be my long distance internal combustion car. My daily is a full electric Fiat 500e.

I’ll try to update as I get work done and discover more.

Congratulations! If it didn't croak when it's stormy out, and far from home, it must be OK. I think there's a Murphy's Law corollary to that effect, and you beat it.
      Time for some pictures, then.

Agreed! I took it easy at first but after the first 40 miles that took two hours I figured I was good to go.

What is everyone using to host photos these days? Photobucket used to be my go to.

I used to use flickr I had no complaints other than when i had to downsize to 1000 photos and start running multiple accounts to get around the hosting limit. I would still be using it had I not got offered space to host pictures on a friend's website.

I just use the "Insert Image" icon on the editor toolbar. Crop or resize photos so that they don't strain the display and bandwidth factors for other users, and then upload to the Swedespeed server. They appear inline, and they don't disappear when some hosting platform changes linking M.O.'s or simply go T.U. Image hosts and accounts going away is why older threads have images missing. Really sucks when there's a good tutorial and the images have vaporized.
