You'd have to swap over the projectors, bulb housing, and wiring harness.

To easily do this, you'd have to disassemble the entire headlight assembly. At that point, most people just buy cheap aftermarket Halogen assemblies and swap over the parts they need to their current bixenon assemblies.

Piggybacking on this older related thread to inquire about replacing an HID assembly with a Halogen assembly?

I have HID in my 05 S40 - but I need to replace the entire passenger side cheaply. Can I simply purchase a halogen assembly and plug it in?

Thanks in advance for any advice on solving the issue affordably.

(I keep burning out HID bulbs rapidly on this side and the insulation inside the housing seems brittle and crumbling everywhere as if it has overheated)

      No. Same response as before.

Thank you for the help on that!

I was able to acquire a used replacement HID headlight assembly and it is working fine.
However, I'm concerned about the same fate falling upon this assembly as the one I've replaced.
When I opened the last assembly to replace the bulb, many of the wires had the insulation crumbling off of them with exposed copper visible all about several wires in multiple spots. I'm wondering if a malfunctioning ballast could have caused this? Or perhaps something entirely different?
(My replacement assembly came with a ballast but I have not installed it - wondering if I need to or not?)

A ballast didn't cause that. The problem is a lot of heat generated by lights and wires that have sat in that heat for over 16 years on your 2005. Pretty much unavoidable and just something that will happen on any older cars, especially cars with headlights that are fully enclosed systems. You could wrap each wire in electrical tape to prevent the exposed copper from shorting itself out on anything.

There would be no need to replace the ballast if your current ballasts are fine.
