Car not reaching temp on highway

Drove to Elmira and back the other day, about 2 hrs of driving and each way on the highway the temp gauge wasnít going past the 3rd or 4th tick. Now when I drive in the city it gets right up to the middle and heat works fine. Itís like the temp goes up when itís idling. Just replaced ect sensor, what could be the issue?

Thanks, would that give any codes? Heat also smells like French toast or maple syrup when hot but Iím guessing thatís the cabin filter or something

Sure you don't have a heater core leak? Doesn't take much to produce a sweet-like smell.

Might be. The rubber in the engine bayís definitely seen better years, probably the same by that. Iíll give the floor a look

If it comes back up at idle and/or slow city operation, it's not a leak, but it's easy enough to look at the core just to be safe, just pull the carpet back to expose it.

I'm concerned my V70 has the same problem. When ti gets cold out it takes unreasonably long for the temperature gauge to reach the normal center position.

Seems like the theormostats are fairly cheap and easy to replace, so I figured I might just do this as a precaution.

I searched IPD's catalogue for thermostats for my car, and they listed a few different brandw, at different temp specifications, some at 87 degrees, some at 90 degrees.

Does anyone have any guidance as to which one to get?
