      Axle Play

I am chasing another noise in the front end of my 2001 V70XC and noticed that the drivers side axle shaft has a bit of play in it where it connects to the motor. What is excessive play and how would I know if it needs to be replaced? Sometimes when turning sharp to the right it will also make a thunk noise.

Is it rotational play in the inner tripod joint or up/down play in the transmission output shaft? But, neither is likely to produce a noise while turning. The outer joint would be more likely to produce noise when turning. Has anything else been replaced on the front suspension?

I guess it would be in and out play where the shaft goes into the transmission? I have replaced the tie rod end links, ball joints and spring seats. It just started the clunking noise after I put my winter tires on.

      What about the strut bearings?

No I haven't changed the strut bearings. I have tested them by trying to turn the nut on top and making sure it doesn't spin around.
