      Rear Door Won't Open

      2016 T6 XC90, 59xxx miles

My driver side rear door won't open with either interior or exterior handle. Tried locking/unlocking many times, no luck. The lock makes audible noise inside this door when cycled. I have removed the interior door trim, interior door panel (not super easy with door closed!). Pulling on the cable does not open the door. Behind the interior door panel, there is another plastic panel that nests in the metal of the door. I can pull this back (but not remove) enough to see the cable running well into the metal door shell. The cable remains secured to something at its terminus in the door.

Nearest dealer is 400 miles away.

Anyone have any ideas? Is there an emergency procedure for opening a door in this state? Thank you in advance for any advice.

Try disconnecting the battery for few min
I had the exact same issue with the exact same door.

Doing the battery thing worked for me.
Apparently the electrical child lock trip and had to be reset

Thank you for the suggestion. I disconnected both batteries for 15 mins tonight and that didn’t work. Left them disconnected overnight tonight and will see in the morning....

Your experience does make some sense as we had this happen 6 mos ago but the condition only lasted 30 mins or so and then resolved itself.

Cold weather? There is a known problem with water entering and freezing. As I understand it Volvo has a fix adding some kind of rubber bag inside.

      So bring the car inside.

Unfortunately no it is unseasonably warm in North Idaho this holiday season, and it’s garaged.

I have 2016 XC90 P* and it literally happened to me about 2 weeks ago. I took my car to the dealer and they had to make a hole in a door panel in order to open it manually and the problem was a failure of electronic motor lock. I have a feeling that’s what you have also. They had to order the part AND the door panel since it got damaged in the process. Took about a week. Now it is good as new. But I am afraid the trip to a dealer is unavoidable. Good luck 🙂

Well unfortunately the battery disconnect didn’t fix it either. I really don’t see how they could get to the mechanism without cutting into the door shell from the inside.

Mind me asking what the dealer charged either you or your warranty for that kind of work?

It was covered by warranty. I paid nothing 🙂 Mine is a CPO warranty.

Update: Took it to a Volvo specialist, they were able to get the door open by passing a screwdriver into the lock mechanism, they're replacing it to the tune of $863, but the part is backordered and not available for a week. Will give them time to explore why my front seat heater doesn't work.

59,000 miles folks, if you're on the fence about a warranty I could only advise in favor, this is not a Toyota.

Same thing happened with my truck....2016....wait for it....Toyota Tacoma. $hit happens, but I agree about not owning any modern vehicle out of warranty. Not worth it. Btw big Russian Rocket fan from back in the 90’s 😀

Got mine back. $869 and two weeks in the shop waiting for the part backordered from Sweden. Now the other rear handle is doing the same.

The latch failed due to rust in the mechanism. No way to service/maintain/prevent a problem like this.

This vehicle is in an enclosed garage 99% of the time.

This vehicle is not long for our household.

That is crazy. The part was around $150 for the 2010 XC90 with electronic child locks, exact scenario. Car repairs are getting scary expensive.

I asked for the old part, and it looks like a >$400 part. Parts for my 911TT are cheaper and that just doesn't seem right!

Two weeks later, now the other rear door handle doesn't work at all. What an ownership experience. Guess I didn't get rid of it soon enough, my mistake.
