My back from the dead 2006 V70 D5.

      First some back ground.
I am in my 50s so probably older than a lot of the folks on here.
      I have been into Volvos since about 14. My parents had a 145 , then a 245, then a 240.

I got my first Volvo about 6 months after passing my driving test.
Then had a succession of various Volvos up a 2012 XC70.

My wife ran off with some one else, and cost me a lot of money,
leaving me with little money for a car.

I got , and still use, a 1998 V70R cheep and got it on the road.
But it is not that great body work wise.

But I wanted something a bit newer and less expensive to run.
      There for I decided I would get a P2 V70.

      I was given a 2003 V70 D5 AWD auto with a knackered gearbox.
I managed to run round in this for a year.

Then a 2002 V70 D5 came my way with a dead engine , so was going to get an engine swap between the two.

But then a 2006 V70 D5 came up very cheep just down the road
The original plan was to get it and part it out , as a parts car.
Once I collected the car the body work was found to in good condition, but mechanical the car was knackered.
I had to collect it with out the wheels, so took a set of mine.
The photos are from the last owner.

The car was very cheap, around $250, or so as lots of mechanical problems at 240,000 miles.

Arrived in my small backyard. The stripped 2002 was on the concrete slab at the time.

First job set VIDA on it, and see why it was unhappy.
      Lots of engine codes.
Most were things not connected right, with bad repairs, like vacuum pipes in the wrong place or missing pipes.

Such as a fuel line with a 360deg twist, or blocked fuel filter.

Or this split inter cooler as well as other boost leaks.
Raiding the scrap yard, got me a lot of the missing parts.
Using a diesel compression tester, I checked that each cylinder was ok, all the same, but on the lower end of the range.
Swapped out two injectors that VIDA said was not giving the right
Flow and needed too much trim.
Also cleaned the stuck throttle valve.
This ended up with no engine codes and a nice even idle.
      Unfortunately it still smoked.

My back from the dead 2006 V70 D5.

Next job was to check over the rest of the car.

      Found:

Home made straight through exhaust pipe, that had melted a chunk out of the rear bumper.

The soot filter had no guts, like a cat, that has been rodded out.

One side of the parking brake had no bits in it at all, but thankfully the hub was un damaged. P2 cars often snap the lugs off the castings.

It had had the bump stops removed from the rear and was sitting very low on lowering springs.

      Various rubber bushes worn out.

Lower control arms completely knackered, and separated.

Most of the plastic arch liners had rub holes in them, from the over sized wheels he had on the car.

One front strut sticking up through the rubber strut top.

A couple of Led not working on the dash.

All the engine mounts were knackered, the brake servo had a vacuum leak, and steering angle sensor faulty.

      Leaking power steering pipe.

The interior was disgustingly filthy. The last owner was a heavy smoker.

So everything was striped out, and the interior metal cleaned.

As I like audio the time was taken to sound proof the car a bit more. Then a replacement cleaned up head liner was fitted, along with replacement interior plastic and all the panels.
Thankfully I had most of the parts , in the 2002 car having up dated that car to the facelift inside and darker colour.

New premium audio speakers, as one of the ones out of my other car did not work, and all the second hand ones I found were no good.

I also fitted the Volvo boot subwoofer, and the 4x75w under seat amp instead of the 4x50w it had. New volume knob on the HU-850.
Note Volvo have this listed wrong on Vida , it is 30679443 , not 30679442.

I have a kit from Volvo to replace the cracked window switch’s , a problem with the later cars.

The car was supplied new with Xeon lights, but the last owner replaced them with some aftermarket lights, as he damaged the original ones trying to clean the cloudy lenses.

I replaced them with a set of earlier glass Xeon ones, as I had them already. I needed to make up an adapter loom to fit them.
This got read of the message for faulty headlights.
Along with changing the rear height sensor as it had snapped its arm off.

The state of the front struts.

I am shamelessly stealing ideas from various people especially
      ScottishBrick.
      So thanks.

I have fitted new rear springs, shocks, and a thicker 21mm rear anti-roll bar.

It could do with a few bushs being changed at the back , but that will have to hold on till later.

I am changing the rear brakes to XC90 ones, that I had got to go on the last car.
      Fun removing the dust sheald.
I know you can cut them , but I prefer not too. Also it makes it easier come annual inspection time, if the tester can’t see anything modified.

Volvo cheapened the P2 cars a bit as they went on , such as only one Bonet strut, and steel brake lines.
I found a car in 426 silver in the scrap yard with a good hinge to replace the one with no strut, as the mounts are missing on the later ones.
I need to make up three brake lines.

In terms of adding sound deadening, S80s have extra in the wheel wells that can be retrofitted to V70s.

      Thanks.
I have seen this before, and got a lot from the S80.
Along with a lot of new stuff.
Unfortunately diesel cars are a lot noisier than petrol/ gas ones.
And I like quite cars, to listen to music. As the traffic is bad a lot of the time. I did have a P3 V70 T6. That was reasonable quite and smooth.
So I am putting in a lot, including behind the felt at the back of the engine compartment, and under the tunnel above the heat shield.
Having to make sure it is high temp stuff.
At some time I may remove the dash and do extra on the inside of the bulkhead, not too bad , just need the A/C degassing.
I may do it when I change the condenser, as it is pretty shot at, but working properly at the moment, so not an urgent job.
I also have lamented glass for the side windows, that should help.

The aim of the car is to have a comfortable cruising car that is not too slow. 340 lb/ft helps along with the M66 gearbox. I have my P80 V70R for when I feel the need for fun. But I wish to improve the handling a bit, but not lower it. I am always catching the V70R, underneath. And I love good brakes. Hence ether 316mm or 336mm going on the front. I have both. Hopefully the 316mm will be ok as lighter.

Following your posts, is very helpful.

328mm dual piston XC90 calipers would be the lightest but the rotors are super heavy, 12kg or more. 316mm are plenty to stop my T5 even with the extra power and I don’t feel any added weight in the steering.

Setting the alignment up properly will majority help the handling. Start with p2r alignment specs.

My car wished me Happy Christmas yesterday, by telling me it needs a set of piston rings.
I pulled the turbo off but the manifold is all oily with oil coming out of the ports.

So no car work being done today, as at my parents eating lots of food for Christmas Day.

Any way Happy Christmas to everyone.

My back from the dead 2006 V70 D5.

Unfortunately, as the car is parked outside , and I don’t feel much enthusiasm for working on cars in the dark after work, unless urgent, it will be another week or so before I get a day when I can work on the car. Hopefully it will stay dry then.
In the meantime just getting some parts.
This is the look I am going for.
What do you lot recon on the silver roof bars, as compared to standard black?
Maybe not as low, and different wheels, as I am not that great a fan of pegs ,plus they are bloody expensive now.
I will probably stick to 17” , as the roads are crap round here.

This is my car with it’s original wheels.
Unfortunately the set I have on now are somewhat knackered, and need refurbishment. But are the same. The previous owner sold the good ones off the car.

      Nice car.
Did you change your door handles , to chrome ones.

That is on my jobs list off a S80?

The Nebulas are good , but also expensive over here.
How do you find cleaning them?

Also I may try 225/50/17 instead of 225/45/17.
Hopefully they will fit as I am not having the car lowered, as my R is low , even with standard suspension and is a pain for catching stuff.
Plus this car is more for comfort. As this is a tuned diesel about the same as a 2.5 LPT, so not a fast car like a T5 or R. But I don’t want 16”. Also the 18” increase the already bad turning circle.

      This was my first P80.
I had it almost new as a demonstration car from Volvo.
This photo was a few weeks ago. I was really pleased to see it still about and in good condition.
      My R.
I do have the right 17” comets for it.
The car just needs some more love.

Saffron is very nice and yours looks pretty good to me! Is it more the interior needs help? I’m always a pretty harsh judge of my own vehicles until I see similar age/mileage examples. Then I feel like they’re not too bad, LOL. The Venetian gets a lot of compliments but that has less to do with me and more to do with prior owners. I’m just trying keep it looking good.

My back from the dead 2006 V70 D5.

The lines on the windscreen are over head cables not cracks.
The windscreen needs removing, and the frame around it needs welding and respraying. A rust spot coming through from the inside on a rear wheel arch, from previous damage.
Along with the front bumper, and a few other places. Unfortunately it has had various spray work over the years and not all that great.
The interior is ok, I swapped in black instead of cream.

I am not sure what I will do with it , once I get my P2 fixed.
1 fix it a bit and use it for local work.
2 a full respray and mechanical rebuild.
3 sell as is or with a few jobs done.
      4 part it out.
Unfortunately I can’t do paint work. And I don’t have the spare money at the moment for it. And the car just is not worth that much.

Yeah, while the bumper and windscreen wouldn’t be the end of the world to me as they could be fixed without too much effort, previous paint makes it less desirable to spend much time/money restoring; especially if Saffron’s were more common there, and/or less desirable in the UK/EU.
