Do the angle gear and rear diff get fluid changes?

      2004 V70R automatic
I've never checked/changed (don't know how to) the angle gear or rear diff fluids. If necessary, when should this be done? What fluid types/weights are used?
      Thanks

      Per manual yes lifetime.

If you’d like to you can, they take different oils though. The Haldex is only Bolvo Haldex fluid and the rear diff will take any good 75w90 gear oil like SevereGear.

Basically is your choice, I think its a good idea I mean I dont see the additive packages lasting the useable lifetime of the car, you’d want to extend that; I did on mine

Thanks all. I'm about to do an engine oil change and was curious about it. I couldn't find any mention of it in the online manual (I don't have a paper copy). I'm kind of afraid of the angle gear but may change the rear end sometime in the spring. Are there any write ups anywhere illustrating the fluid changes in both?

There are three components in the drivetrain that I would change the fluids in. Angle gear, Haldex, and rear diff. If doing the Haldex, replace the filter as well.

Here is a guide for you.

Swapped all 3 in my R, runs PERFECT!! So yes, if you have 100k plus absolutley.

Note: Lifetime is classified as the calculated life of the car (I think most euro's it's 80-100k) so when the manual says lifetime fluid, it's subjective. ATF is perfect example of this, if you don't change your ATF before 80k on both the AW55 and the TF80 your probably going to have issues at some point.

Definitely change it if you haven't. I changed mine when I bought it with 135k miles. Redline 75w90 for front and rear diff. Volvo AOC oil for the Haldex w/ filter change. Automatic transmission fluid change with Aisin Type 4 ATF.

Invest in a electric oil extractor pump. It'll make your job easier.

No such thing. Change all fluids at regular intervals to ensure the optimal operational function throughout the life of part and promote longevity.

Lifetime to them is language that is said with a *wink*. It means until the part fails. When the part fails, it has reached the end of its life.

What they don't tell you is that many times the part reached the end of its life because the fluid wasn't changed. The old fluid broke down and could no longer deliver the heat resistance, lubrication, suspension and wear resistance it did when fresh, which accelerated the failure of the part.

I changed all three. Hardest was changing the Haldex filter due to limited access. The rear differential will require a small diameter tube to snake to the bottom to suck out the gear oil. I used a tube 0.25" outside diameter and a MityVac. Goes slow due to viscosity. I used Volvo branded fluids.

Not many things described as lifetime really are when you see the miles so many of these cars have now.
Mines done just over 65k Miles and I did all three as well a a full trans flush, at that stage it was a 13 year old car and the cost of the oil and kit (Haldex) can't have been more than a few hundred bucks - even shipped across the Pacific to New Zealand.

I'm not a mechanic but I have enough knowledge and mechanical sympathy to know there was no downside to doing it
