      Oil leak

I just purchased an 02 v70 xc that needed the timing belt redone as it had an oil leak from the front cranck seal so i replaced the seal did the whole timing belt kit you know water pump tensioner pulley put it all back together added oil started car oil came flooding out so i took everything apart again replaced all the seals for the oil pump put it all back together again added oil turned the car on no leak so i put the fender liner back on put the tire on took it for a short shake down cruise let it get up to temp but didnt take it on the highway got back home checked under and no leak now this morning i ran the kids to school and on the way back i got a no oil pressure stop and shut off engine i was only a few blocks from home so i just drove it home as the warning and the oil light would come on then go off again so i thought maybe its the pressure sensor got home and parked it add a little bit of oil cause maybe it needed a half a quart more for turbo lubrication or what ever and then oil came flooding out the side again i know i tightened everything down so could it be a bad oil pump? Cant quite tell where oil is coming from but looks to be near the timing cover or oil filter oil pan area that side of the motor any thoughts would be appreciated. Sorry about the long story but want to give all the info i can.

P.s. the volvo sat for about a year before i bought it

ditto - it's likely hemorrhaging oil from one of the cam seals. Hard to tell unless you take the side-timing cover off. You need to replace your PCV stuff before replacing any more seals otherwise seals will just be pushed back out. If you are lucky, you won't have pushed rear main seal out (rare) but do check to see if you now have a leak on LHS of engine. If you do, you have some more quality time to spend with your car.

PCV is arguable the most common cause of these cars being scrapped/abandoned for mileage north of 150k miles. Either because seals blow and work is cost prohibitive to perform or because seals blow and engine fries due to lack of oil.

It really should have been a mandatory service every 100k miles.

Is this the magic number/mileage the PCV needs to be tended to?

Not necessarily, though a good ballpark. I think Volvo has a system inspection recommended somewhere around that mileage. A lot of folks seem to start seeing issues around that mileage. My '06 had it done due at ~65K to the top hose cracking off a couple years before I bought it, whereas my '01 is still on the original as far as I know (being an NA might help?) and passes the glove test easily. I check yearly on both cars, though I'm only putting 4-6k on each per year now.
