      Angle Gear Time!

Some of you may remember my ordeal with my front passenger axle. It's been replaced. I got over it, and even managed to defend the car from my wife's insistence that we sell it.

So now it's time to replace the angle gear. My trusted specialist (also an active member of this community) recommends replacing it, instead of re-sealing it. The front-end guys at the shop sourced a new one and a used one for half the price. Now I'm trying to decide. They haven't inspected the used one, but it has 96K on it, the same as my car. I want to save money, but I also want to do what's best for the car, given that I am all in. In other words, I am not just looking for a patch.

What I am wondering is what level of risk is there with used angle gears? Anyone know the average lifespan of one?

I went used after my collar sleeve stripped, I had one from a parts car so it was free. The teeth on the inside tends to strip with the collar sleeve, so if you source a good one make sure the teeth are good. If you’re going for longevity, it’d be smart to reseal the used unit even if it didn’t leak. With my car I cheated out on this because I just need it to last a couple more years. In your case, it may just make more sense to go with the new one. If you replace the collar sleeve (you should), get the kit on fcp with the 3 gaskets.

Resealing the used unit is great advice. But then that would push the price (to me) close enough to the new unit that it's probably worth the extra money for a new one.

      Thanks for the good advice.

Why are they recommending replacement instead of resealing?

Not leaking? No growling/ worn bearing? Can you get the rear wheels to spin on wet pavement? If yes just r&r w Volvo AG fluid and call it a day. Wait til the collar fails then pull it.

Had some nice rear wheel spin/ fishtail the other day coming out of 3 way stop, punched it too hard in 1st. Totally surprised me... good times

I replaced mine because the bearings were shot- so much play on the driveshaft coupling that it killed the driveshaft. If you don't have an issue like that, no reason to replace it. Changing the seals isn't that big of a deal and much less expensive.

Specifically, what's the reason for replacement?
If I were you, i'd base my decision on the condition of the current one, which is best evaluated when the AG is off of the vehicle.
